For Your Consideration During These Days
With the USA still at "High Orange Alert", the Homeland Security Dept. is warning all Americans to be aware that a terrorist attack WILL occur on our soil. Being prepared will go a long way to make our lives more anxiety-free everyday. With that intent in mind Carroll Cobbs, former Radiation Health Physicist for the State of Washington, has put together a list of items suggested to keep in the trunk of your car as you travel further than five miles, a comfortable walk, from your home. This is very prudent and one that I have enacted for over 10 years. I keep many of these items in a backback in my car trunk. If you chose to have just a few of these in your vehicle, that would be much better than none! The people of NYC during 9/11 were not allowed to leave Manhattan for many hours, as the island was completely sealed off. Many of those residents of New Jersey, Connecticutt, Long Island & Update New York wished they were better prepared when stuck in the city. Additionally, when the Northridge quake struck the L. A. area, many wished they would have had such a pack in their cars when the freeways were destroyed and they were unable to move about for days. One added thing to consider--Wouldn't you be glad to get these things now while still available, rather than when an emergency strikes and the supplies are depleted?

Carroll states: If you must drive more than 5 miles to work, school or for shopping, it is prudent to have at least these few items in your car. Given the heightened state of emergency we all now face, and growing possibilities of calamity, man-made or otherwise, these simple and inexpensive preparations can be life-saving. Also, consider enhancing your children's school backpacks with some of these items.
Are you prepared to walk back home, or from where you might be when "it" (including tornado, earthquake, hurricane)happens? If forced by conditions into an emergency shelter, are you prepared to "ride out" the disaster where you may be forced to remain for a day or longer?
Attitude is everything, and being prepared can turn a disaster into an adventure!

Special Update for March 17, 2003
The President of the United States has just declared war on Iraq in 48 hours, unless Saddam Hussein and his sons leave immediately. Additionally, The Homeland Security Department of the USA has again raised the threat level from Yellow to Orange, the second highest response code. When the Department issued an Orange level earlier this year, Secretary Tom Ridge recommended that everyone get duct tape and plastic sheeting to create a "safe-room" in their homes in the event of a biological/chemical or even a nuclear attack here on U. S. soil. While that advice brings home the seriousness of a potential threat, it is incomplete because it failed to mention how fresh air would be circulated into such a safe-room. Alot of information has been presented about air filtration designs, some of which is thorough and some not. However, what this has done is to create a dialogue and bring forth understandings of how to protect one's self and family. With that intent in mind, I have received information from a fellow Yelm area community member who is a former Radiation Health Physicist for the State of Washington. Carroll Cobbs is someone of impeccable credentials I have personally known for many years and feel his experience provides a valuable resource to all that may be interested. Therefore, I have asked him if I may share this information he forwarded to me with you, my readers, so that you may have this knowledge, to do with as you will. He has graciously agreed that this be passed on in its entirety to you:

On Nuclear Radiation Protection
As a former Radiation Health Physicist for the State of Washington, I want to add my thoughts to the pool of ideas now circulating in our community regarding air filter designs which might be effective against nuclear radiation contamination. When a nuclear weapon is detonated, an intense burst of gamma radiation is emitted in all directions, along with some *alpha, beta* and *x-ray* radiation. The specifics of exactly what kind of radiation and how much of each there will be can be determined by a knowledge of the construction of the bomb, air detonation (the worst case) or surface, and the type of material at existing at *ground zero*, the site of the detonation. What was there before the explosion will determine the make-up and hazard level of the radioactive fallout. * Gamma radiation* is significantly more energetic than ultraviolet or x-ray radiation. Like x-ray, gamma radiation is called *"ionizing radiation"* because it is energetic enough to knock out electrons from the outer bands of stable atoms, thus forming *"ions".* Gamma rays travel primarily in a straight line, and can be stopped by several feet of earth, concrete or dense, metallic materials, such as lead.. Most published guidelines are for *direct exposure conditions, _near_ the source of the radiation*. But the *energy of ionizing radiation diminishes _significantly_ with distance*. Within a perimeter of up to several miles of the detonation, depending on the size and type of the bomb, all matter - air, water, dust particles, other gases, concrete, wood, biological material, hydrocarbons, and their constituent molecules or cells - can be drastically modified by this process in a number of ways, only a few of which are predictable beforehand. In the body, highly-energetic radioactive ions can interact with tissue, forming at the least,* free radicals.* Highly-energetic gamma ray photons (the actual radiation emitted by radioactive particles) pass thru the body, randomly damaging or destroying tissue, cells and DNA along the way in a process called a *Linear Energy Transfer (LET).* Research papers are still being written about the biological effects found in Hiroshima survivors and their offspring as well as about the effects in survivors of the more recent Chernobyl disaster. Radiation exposure is deadly, has long-term effects and produces genetic mutations.
As pointed out by Bruce Searle last Thursday in an excellent presentation about his company's filter systems (Air Quality Technologies, Inc.) /*breathing air containing gamma-irradiated particles and ions poses the _greatest _threat to human health*/ in any nuclear survival scenario. Even direct skin contact with radioactive fallout has far fewer health consequences than breathing contaminated air. Once inside the lungs, these charged particles are introduced directly into the bloodstream and then on to the vital organs. Since they are also emitting gamma radiation photons, there is possibility of increased LET-related damage. A skin contamination is most likely survivable, as long as no contact is made with the mucous membranes, but *breathing radioactive gases or particles is usually fatal*.
Protection against gamma radiation is typically measured in *centimeters of lead* (10 to 30 or more cm) or *inches of concrete* (from 20 to 50 inches, depending upon the density of the concrete, ie., 7-sack mix, 9-sack mix, etc.) between you and the source of the radiation. Again, this is assuming close proximity to the source of the radiation.
Consequently, shielding against charged particles in an air filter system with simple electrostatic and HEPA air filters and several pieces of 1/4" or 1/2" plywood is not likely to afford much protection against radioactive fallout. The *Air Quality Technology* systems appear to have covered these possibilities completely and, at around $700.00 present an excellent option for safeguarding one's home or shelter.
However for those unwilling or unable to spend this amount, using *lead, steel or iron plates* at least 1/32" thick inside the box designs presently being circulated, to line the air path probably would offer adequate protection *as long as fallout from a detonation at least 50 miles away was the main concern. *The metal plates are much more efficient than plywood at reducing/absorbing the energy of the gamma radiation emitted by the irradiated particles. Because it travels primarily in a straight line,* radiation intensity can be reduced by as much as 1000 times at each turn by incorporating 90 degree turn for the air passage.* So at each turn in the filter box, some would be absorbed and the rest lose would lose energy as they pass thru each successive layer. A reduction of "1000 times" is a best-case calculation. In reality, the actual reduction may be much less, depending on a host of variables, but would still be a fractional value of the radiation in the incoming air. The final suggestion is covering the plywood air path "maze" incorporating the 90 degree turns described above, with *lead foil. *This* *would be a good compromise to inserting sheets of metal plates (costly and heavy). Even copper foil or heavy-duty aluminum foil will add some stopping power for gamma-irradiated particles. The higher the *density* of the foil material, the better, which is why lead is better than copper. The expected effectiveness against gamma radiation, of layers of metal foil at a given thickness can be calculated from a table of *Half-Value Layers* for various metals. This term essentially means how many layers of a given material are required to reduce the energy of radiation to 1/2 of its incident or incoming value. Of course */all of these suggestions are postulated upon unknown detonation and fallout conditions/*. "Clean" bombs versus "dirty" bombs (emitting more protons) bomb size (kiloton vs megaton "yield") prevailing winds at the time, rainy or dry conditions, air or surface detonation, the list of possibilities goes on. However, adequately preparing _here_ against a detonation in Seattle or Portland (the two most likely targets) would be quite different than preparing for one as close as Ft. Lewis or Lacey. Since no one knows where, when, what kind of or how much, each person must decide for themselves how best to prepare.
A key point to remember is that *distance from the point of detonation is the most significant factor in calculating one's safety.* The intense burst of gamma radiation accompanying a nuclear detonation is a *momentary phenomenon*. The *radiation emitted by the radioactive particles created by the detonation is the main concern with nuclear fallout.* ** Apart from the radioactivity issue, HEPA filtration and electrostatic filtration should be as robust as possible, meaning use as much as will work with your design. *Volatile Organic Gases (VOG's)* like fluorine, pollutants like hydrocarbons and dust must still be dealt with to insure clean, safe air. ** Read, learn and make informed choices based on what you can actually do. A good website for related radiation protection info is:
Click HereIn trying to sell you a survey meter, they provide an excellent list of FAQ's. A somewhat dated, but still good and relatively easy book on radiation protection is */NCRP Report No. 39: Basic Radiation Protection Criteria/*, published by the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurement (NCRP). Unfortunately it is out of print. Update for Week of March 17, 2003
I have received many requests for stories I have recently run. Therefore, all Updates are now available to you and everyone 24/7 at: www.srklein.com/updates The links were active on the date that Update was sent, however may not be at a later time.

1. There are so many wonderful advancements currently happening to enhance life on this planet, that most of this Update will be devoted to those events from the past week. With war looming ever closely on the horizon, just one thought. To really see truth in this whole campaign, one would be wise to observe, with discernment, issues from both sides and stay away from taking stands that would not allow you to see all viewpoints. There is and will be a huge amount of disinformation by all constituencies, so use your own knowingness and trust your own intuition. NEVER take my word for anything listed here. Listen only to yourself. I provide links for you to read each story in depth for yourself .

2. On a follow-up to previous stories about the influence of financiers and industrialists advising this administration, a story has been written by noted journalist Seymour M. Hersh this week in THE NEW YORKER Magazine, that has created a firestorm for members of The Defense Policy Board Richard Perle and Gerald Hillman, with a story outlining "back room" deal making in this Iraqi conflict. The Defense Policy Board is a Defense Department advisory group composed primarily of highly respected former government officials, retired military officers, and academics. At the core of this story is a suggested conflict of interest with certain of these advisers and Saudi businessmen, and including comments by Prince Bandar bin Sultan, Saudi Ambassador to the United States, right on down to Hillman acknowledging he drafted memorandums for these high level interactions with the help of his college-student daughter. HUM! Here is the full text of Hersh's article: Click HerePerle called Senator Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio)a liar on NBC's MEET THE PRESS and has now filed a lawsuit against Hersh in Great Britain, because the likelihood of better outcomes for plaintiffs there. 3. And lastly on the war front, the Bush Administration has asked five American engineering firms to bid on post-war Iraq rebuilding contracts including Halliburton Co, where Vice President Cheney served as CEO from 1995-2000. Reported here last year was a request from the General Accounting Office (GAO), the auditing arm of the U. S. government for V. P. Cheney to supply information how the oil policy of the administration might have been influenced through the "people of oil" in highgovernment posts, such as Cheney. The courts overruled the GAO and said Cheney did not have to supply such material. HUM!: Click Here.

4. A husband-wife chemistry professor duo has stated that they have created minuscule graphite fibers they claim can store enough hydrogen gas to power an electric car for 5,000 miles, and which presumably could be used to power everything from vending machines to laptops. Such an innovation could render gasoline-powered vehicles obsolete: Click HereThis could come none to soon with the current oil outlook bleak, at best: Click Here.

5. You may have to soon update your radio for the the "days to come". The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved digital radio broadcast in October, 2002 and some stations are airing digital bands alongside their current frequencies. You'll need a new radio to hear the new iBiquity "HD" radio signal: Click Here.

Update for Week of March 10, 2003
Editor's Note: To summarize the three motivating factors for the war with Iraq all converging now:

A. The military-industrial complex leaders' desire to field test their latest weapons of technology in live conditions Click HereAnd: Click HereAnd: Click HereB. The need for corporate powers to maintain their control of energy via low gas prices, so this country will not turn to free energy sources such as hydrogen. Therefore, corporate control of the second largest oil owning country is imperative. Click HereC. The fulfillment of the New Testament's Book of Revelations prophesy that the final battle in the history of the future will be fought on an ancient battlefield in northern Israel called Armageddon, freeing up Israel before Christ triumphs to begin his 1000-year rule. The return of the Jews to their ancient homeland with the establishment of Israel in 1948 is seen by Evangelicals as a precondition for the Second Coming of Christ and the Millennium signaling the timing of such an endeavor. Jerry Falwell: Click HereAnd NEWSWEEK Magazine's current issue examines why President Bush's "God Talk" worries friends & foes with his conviction that he's doing God's will: Click HereAnd: Click Here.

2. Eight hundred and ten years ago this week, the Muslim Warrior who opposed the Crusades died. Saladin, the Middle Eastern Ruler who supposedly told his son, "Spilled blood never sleeps" died on March 4, 1193: Click HereAnd: Click Here.

3. This article titled, "Laying in Provisions for a Rainy Day, not Doomsday" appeared on the front page of the Life section of USA TODAY last week. This article lists the Mormons' suggested stockpile list: Click Here.

4. In another Homeland Security Act provision, model rockets may be grounded because the propellant used to make the solid-fueled motors has now been classified an explosive. Say goodbye to another experience that will now be only a memory, like shooting off model rockets in the park on a sunny Saturday afternoon: Click Here.

5. When oil gets to $40 a barrel and gas hits $2 a gallon, the American people begin to car-pool, reduce their fuel consumption, and buy more fuel efficient vehicles. This lowers demand and forces the auto manufacturers to produce a more fuel efficient product, although with this oil crisis, it will be with hybrids, hydrogen or electric vehicles--and the oil people all know this is their last "hurrah", hence the grab for Iraqi oil; to lure the American public back into complacency with under $2/gallon gasoline and the way to do it is to unleash Iraqi production. The Wall Street Journal this week published a report showing sales figures for February of the following vehicles: Toyota Prius hybrid up 32.9%, Ford Escape crossover SUV up 28.4%, Honda Civic up 10.3%, Ford Explorer SUV down 7.1%, Chevrolet Silverado large pickup down 29.2%. You must enroll to view this article: Click Here.

6. And lastly on the war front, here are pictures from around the world of the February 15th, 2003 peace marches: Click Here.

7. Possibly missed in all of the war talk is the story that appeared this week that says that some hyperactive kids may just be tired because they are bad sleepers and may not have attention deficit disorder (ADHD) and may not need the regimen of prescribed drugs. HUM: Click Here.

8. Doctors in Royal Oak, Michigan this week said they are attempting an experimental procedure to heal a teenage patient's heart by infusing it with the boy's own stem cells: Click Here.
