QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"...there is hope for the future.
When the world is ready for a new and better life,
all this will someday come to pass, in God's good time."

Captain Nemo in "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas",
(French: Vingt mille lieues sous les mers)
classic science fiction novel by French writer Jules Verne published in 1870.

1. "TEXAS MAN MAKES H2O OUT OF AIR"
"The machine is called the Drought-Master.

'These make pure water,' said LeBleu. 'The water never touches the ground. It is strictly straight out of the air. We have oceans of water in the air, in the sky. All you have to do is pull it out and condense it down.'

LeBleu said moisture-laden air is pulled through the machine's generator, condenses it and then exhausts the purified air. The captured water is then filtered and is actually drinkable.

'It is ready on demand. It is good emergency water,' he explained.

The patented machine is now on the market and plugs into an electric outlet. It can produce 5- to 7- gallons a day," quoting Jacqueline Ingles of KXAN, NBC in Austin. link here

2. "THE BLUE BRAIN PROJECT EPFL"
"Reconstructing the brain piece by piece and building a virtual brain in a supercomputer—these are some of the goals of the Blue Brain Project. The virtual brain will be an exceptional tool giving neuroscientists a new understanding of the brain and a better understanding of neurological diseases.

The Blue Brain project began in 2005 with an agreement between the EPFL and IBM, which supplied the BlueGene/L supercomputer acquired by EPFL to build the virtual brain," quoting the Blue Brain Project.

3. "ANTIMATTER BELT AROUND EARTH DISCOVERED..."
"A thin band of antimatter particles called antiprotons enveloping the Earth has been spotted for the first time.

The find, described in Astrophysical Journal Letters, confirms theoretical work that predicted the Earth's magnetic field could trap antimatter.

The team says a small number of antiprotons lie between the Van Allen belts of trapped "normal" matter.

The researchers say there may be enough to implement a scheme using antimatter to fuel future spacecraft," quoting the BBC. link here

KLEINER'S KORNER FOR THE WEEK OF AUGUST 8, 2011
"QUOTE OF THE WEEK"
"To sin by silence, when we should protest,
Makes cowards out of men."

Ella Wheeler Wilcox (1850–1919)
American Poet

1. "ALL OF EARTH'S SYSTEMS IN RAPID DELCINE"
"The size and number of protected areas on land and sea has increased dramatically since the 1980s, now totaling over 100,000 in number and covering 17 million square kilometres of land and two million square kilometres of oceans, a new study reported Thursday [Aug 4].

But impressive as those numbers look, all indicators reveal species going extinct faster than ever before, despite all the additions of new parks, reserves and other conservation measures, according to the study published in the journal Marine Ecology Progress Series.

'It is amazing to me that we haven't dealt with this failure of protected areas to slow biodiversity losses,' said lead author Camilo Mora of University of Hawaii at Manoa.

The ability of protected areas to address the problem of biodiversity loss - the decline in diversity and numbers of all living species - has long been overestimated, the study reported. The reality is that most protected areas are not truly protected. Many are "paper parks," protected in name only. Up to 70 percent of marine protected areas are paper parks, Mora said...

We learn that if the debt ceiling isn’t raised, we’ll see:
"The immediate collapse of the U.S. economy, followed by Japan sinking into the sea, followed by a worldwide Depression the likes of which no mortal can imagine, followed by Week 2.
And when asked if "this debt ceiling thing" is routine or the end of the world, the reply is, "Both". HMMM!
