| KLEINER'S KORNER FOR WEEK OF JANUARY 24, 2011
|
There will be no Kleiner's Korner next week.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK: "But when senior politicians and attention seeking media commentators call for specific individuals or groups of people to be killed they should be charged with incitement - to murder. Those who call for an act of murder deserve as significant share of the guilt as those raising a gun to pull the trigger." Julian Assange (1971- ) Editor-in-Chief of WikiLeaks Quoted from the Huffington Post:

1. "CAN OUR DNA ELECTROMAGNETICALLY 'TELEPORT' ITSELF" "Nobel Prize winner Luc Montagnier describes a phenomenon in which DNA emits electromagnetic signals of its own construction, "ghost DNA" that can be mistaken by enzymes as the real deal and replicated in another place. Essentially, it's DNA teleportation," quoting Clay Dillow in Popular Science.

2. "MAMMOTH COULD BE BROUGHT BACK TO LIFE IN 4 YEARS" Mammoth Could Be Brought Back To Life In 4 Years "Researchers will attempt resurrecting the mammoth, a species believed extinct for over 5,000 years, after finally obtaining tissue last summer from a carcass preserved in a Russian mammoth research laboratory.
The team will be led by Professor Akira Iritani, professor emeritus at Kyoto University, notes Physorg.com.
Though the study began in 1997, the researchers were unable to determine how to safely extract DNA until a 2008 experiment by Dr. Teruhiko Wakayama, during which he cloned a mouse that had been in deep freeze for 16 years," quoting Zoe Triska in the Huffington Post.

3. QUANTUM ENTANGLEMENT IN THE NEWS A. "Quantum Entanglement Could Stretch Across Time" "In the weird world of quantum physics, two linked particles can share a single fate, even when they’re miles apart.
Now, two physicists have mathematically described how this spooky effect, called entanglement, could also bind particles across time.
If their proposal can be tested, it could help process information in quantum computers and test physicists’ basic understanding of the universe.
“You can send your quantum state into the future without traversing the middle time,” said quantum physicist S. Jay Olson of Australia’s University of Queensland, lead author of the new study," by Lisa Grossman in WIRED Science.

4. "PUT THIS ONE IN THE 'WOW' FILE" "This week [Jan. 14], scientists say they've discovered antimatter beams shooting above thunderstorms, a never-before seen phenomenon.
"These signals are the first direct evidence that thunderstorms make antimatter particle beams," said Michael Briggs of the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
The antimatter beams were detected from aboard NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, " By Doyle Rice, USA TODAY.

5. "TWO SUNS? TWIN STARS COULD BE VISIBLE FROM EARTH BY 2012" "Earth could be getting a second sun, at least temporarily.
Dr. Brad Carter, Senior Lecturer of Physics at the University of Southern Queensland, outlined the scenario to news.com.au. Betelgeuse, one of the night sky's brightest stars, is losing mass, indicating it is collapsing. It could run out of fuel and go super-nova at any time.
When that happens, for at least a few weeks, we'd see a second sun, Carter says. There may also be no night during that timeframe," quoting The Huffington Post's Dean Praetorius.

| KLEINER'S KORNER FOR WEEK OF JANUARY 17, 2011

QUOTE OF THE WEEK "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy." Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968) American civil rights leader This is the 25th anniversary of a federal holiday honoring Dr. King:

1. "SCIENTISTS SAY DOLPHINS SHOULD BE TREATED AS 'NON-HUMAN PERSONS'" "Dolphins have been declared the world’s second most intelligent creatures after humans, with scientists suggesting they are so bright that they should be treated as “non-human persons”, by Jonathan Leake in the Sunday Times.
link here .
2. "EARTH MUST PREPARE FOR CLOSE ENCOUNTER WITH ALIENS, SAY SCIENTISTS" "World governments should prepare a co-ordinated action plan in case Earth is contacted by aliens, according to scientists...
The comments are part of an extraterrestrial-themed edition of the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A published today [Jan. 10]. In it, scientists examine all aspects of the search for extraterrestrial life, from astronomy and biology to the political and religious fallout that would result from alien contact," quoting UK's Guardian.

3. "WOBBLY EARTH MEANS YOUR HOROSCOPE IS WRONG" "Stars shifted over 2,000 years so horoscope signs are nearly a month off"
"Thanks to Earth's wobble, astrological signs are, well, bunk... 'Astrology tells us that the sun is in one position, whereas astronomy tells us it's in another position,' said Joe Rao, SPACE.com's skywatching columnist and a lecturer at New York's Hayden Planetarium. The shift is caused by precession, the wobble in the Earth's axis caused by the gravitational attraction of the moon to the Earth's equator," by Stephanie Pappas in LiveScience.

4. "34,000-YEAR-OLD ORGANISMS FOUND BURIED ALIVE!" "It's a tale that has all the trappings of a cult 1960s sci-fi movie: Scientists bring back ancient salt crystals, dug up from deep below Death Valley for climate research. The sparkling crystals are carefully packed away until, years later, a young, unknown researcher takes a second look at the 34,000-year-old crystals and discovers, trapped inside, something strange. Something ... alive.
Thankfully this story doesn't end with the destruction of the human race, but with a satisfied scientist finishing his Ph.D.
'It was actually a very big surprise to me,' said Brian Schubert, who discovered ancient bacteria living within tiny, fluid-filled chambers inside the salt crystals," by Andrea Mustain, OurAmazingPlanet Staff Writer:

C. "Music Gives Brain Natural Buzz" "Listening to Music Triggers Release of Dopamine in the Brain"
"Listening to music may be pleasing to the ear as well as the body, according to a new study.
Researchers found that listening to music releases the neurotransmitter dopamine in the brain and sends pleasure signals to the rest of the body. And the more pleasing the music is to the ear, the more intensely pleasurable the experience is for the body.
Dopamine is a chemical involved in the brain's reward system and is usually associated with more tangible pleasures such as food, psychoactive drugs, and money.
'Our results provide, to the best of our knowledge, the first direct evidence that the intense pleasure experience when listening to music is associated with dopamine activity in the mesolimbic reward system,' write researcher Valorie Salimpoor of Montreal Neurological Institute at McGill University in Quebec, Canada, and colleagues in Nature Neuroscience," quoting Jennifer Warner in WebMD Health News:

1. TWO OUTSTANDING FILMS HERE LAST WEEK - BE SURE YOU MAKE A POINT TO SEE THESE If you missed these two films here last week, be sure to note when they are released online or DVD. These are monumental, landmark documentaries that everyone should see.
1. GhettoPhysics: Will the Real Pimps and Ho's Please Stand Up!
link here Ed. Note: This is an amazing film, even more important than film-maker Will Arntz's ground-breaking 2004 film, What the Bleep. What the Bleep captivated an aware audience about their role in creating reality. This film can be understood in the simple explanation right down to the "street". This was done here brilliantly.
While the terminology is at first an affront, the excellent explanation for the reason this is used is well-presented & the movie grows on you. E Ray is a genius!
Ghettophysics has been featured on CNN [Jan. 4th]:

2. Waiting for "Superman" "From David Guggenheim, the Academy Award®-winning director of AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH, comes another stirring, must-see clarion call of our time, WAITING FOR “SUPERMAN”, a deeply personal exploration of the current state of public education in the U. S. and how it is affecting our children." Ed. Note: An amazing expose!
link here .
2. THREE STORIES LAST WEEK OF NOTE ON THE HUMAN MIND A. "Journal’s Paper on ESP Expected to Prompt Outrage" One of psychology’s most respected journals has agreed to publish a paper presenting what its author describes as strong evidence for extrasensory perception, the ability to sense future events.
The decision may delight believers in so-called paranormal events, but it is already mortifying scientists," quoting Benedict Carey in the New York Times.

B. "New Year's resolutions? Brain can sabotage success" "'Why are bad habits stronger? You're fighting against the power of an immediate reward,' says Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse and an authority on the brain's pleasure pathway," quoting Lauran Neergaard, AP Medical Writer. [Ed. Note: See brain graphic in story!]

C. "Could It Be? Spooky Experiments That 'See' The Future" "One of the most respected, senior and widely published professors of psychology, Daryl Bem of Cornell, has just published an article that suggests that people — ordinary people — can be altered by experiences they haven't had yet. Time, he suggests, is leaking. The Future has slipped, unannounced, into the Present. And he thinks he can prove it," quoting Robert Krulwich on NPR.

The busiest runway will be re-designated 19R/1L on aviation charts. It's been 18R/36L, indicating its alignment along the 180-degree approach from the north and the 360-degree approach from the south. The Federal Aviation Administration required the runway designation change to account for what a National Geographic News report described as a gradual shift of the Earth's magnetic pole at nearly 40 miles a year toward Russia because of magnetic changes in the core of the planet," quoting the Tampa Tribune.

Imagine if you will, as a young boy growing up in Kentucky on the edge of the Deep South in America, circa 1950-60's, aware of the deep divide some 45 years ago hearing stories of my Alabama-raised mother being required to sit in the front of the bus, separated from her black classmates, or drinking from a separate whites-only water fountain or going into a white's only rest room, all the while being witness to one of the most disgraceful eras in American history.
So, when Hudson's tribute to Oprah aired on December 28th, I could only be amazed & imagine how far this country has come in 40+ years. Join me and just think about it: a black woman, now one of the world's most influential people - a black AND a woman, being feted by another black woman before an entire nation shortly after accolades in The White House, bestowed by a black President & First Lady.
Lest this moment be passed-over in some cavalier fashion while the masses see this as mere entertainment, I say this is a huge event of monumental proportions that should be acknowledged & celebrated by all Americans.
Even in such difficult & challenging times as the world undergoes extreme change, this stands as a beacon of hope on the precipice of the birthing of a new year. All of humanity are brothers & sisters.
May we see the magic all around us and may your 2011 be filled with the wonder of it all!

1. "AMYGDALA AT THE CENTRE OF YOUR SOCIAL NETWORK" "A larger emotion-processing brain centre is linked to a bigger circle of friends.
How many friends do you have? A rough answer can be predicted by the size of a small, almond-shaped brain structure that is present in a wide range of vertebrates, scientists report today [Dec. 26] in Nature Neuroscience.
The researchers studied the amygdala, which is involved in inter-personal functions such as interpreting emotional facial expressions, reacting to visual threats and trusting strangers. Inter-species comparisons in non-human primates have previously shown that amygdala volume is associated with troop size, suggesting that the brain region supports skills necessary for a complex social life," quoting Nature.

2. "BRAIN THICKNESS DETERMINES POLITICAL LEANING: STUDY" "Neuroscientists are examining whether political allegiances are hard-wired into people after finding evidence that the brains of conservatives are a different shape to those of left-wingers.
Scans of 90 students' brains at University College London (UCL) uncovered a "strong correlation" between the thickness of two particular areas of grey matter and an individual's views.
Self-proclaimed right-wingers had a more pronounced amygdala - a primitive part of the brain associated with emotion while their political opponents from the opposite end of the spectrum had thicker anterior cingulates. The research was carried out by Geraint Rees director of the UCL Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience who said he was "very surprised" by the finding, which is being peer reviewed before publication next year.

The work, which sheds light on how our past experiences inform our future choices, will be reported on Dec. 22 in an advance online publication of Nature," quoting SceinceDaily.
