KLEINER'S KORNER FOR WEEK OF DECEMBER 27, 2010
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
“Every person is the creation of himself,
the image of his own thinking and believing.
As individuals think and believe, so they are.”

Claude M. Bristol (1851-1951)
American journalist who worked on the army newspaper, Stars and Stripes until 1919.
Best known for the book The Magic of Believing, published in 1948.
From the Claude Bristol website: link here

As this marks the last Korner of 2010, best wishes for 2011.
More to come as a new year's edition is rolled-out next week.

1. "PLACEBOS WORK, EVEN WHEN PATIENTS ARE IN THE KNOW, STUDY FINDS"
"In what researchers call a novel 'mind-body' therapy, most patients in a study suffering from irritable bowel syndrome reported relief after receiving pills they were told contained no real medicine...
The finding, reported online Wednesday in the journal PloS One, may point the way to wider — and more ethical — applications of the well-known 'placebo effect.'

'The conventional wisdom is you need to make a patient think they're taking a drug; you have to use deception and lies,' said lead author Ted Kaptchuk, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School," quoting Amina Khan in the Los Angeles Times. link here

2. "FOSSIL DNA POINTS TO NEW BRANCH OF HUMANITY"
"A finger bone from Siberia now reveals that a previously unknown group of ancient humans once existed there, one neither like us nor Neanderthals.

Bizarrely, the DNA from these extinct Siberians seems unusually similar to that of Pacific Islanders from tropical Melanesia.

The 30,000-year-old fossil was found in Denisova Cave in southern Siberia in 2008, a bone fragment that likely came from a fingertip of a young girl," quoting Charles Q. Choi in LiveScience

3. "THE BIRTH OF TIME: QUANTUM LOOPS DESCRIBE THE EVOLUTION OF THE UNIVERSE"
"Physicists from the Faculty of Physics, University of Warsaw have put forward – on the pages of Physical Review D – a new theoretical model of quantum gravity describing the emergence of space-time from the structures of quantum theory. It is not only one of the few models describing the full general theory of relativity advanced by Einstein, but it is also completely mathematically consistent," quoting the website Faculty of Physics at University of Warsaw: link here
.

4. BMW ADVERT 'BURNS' LOGO ON TO CINEMA-GOERS' EYELIDS SO THEY CAN SEE IT WHEN THEY CLOSE THEIR EYES"
"BMW has come up with an innovative way of making sure viewers remember its latest ad: they are imprinting the firm’s logo on people’s retina.

The campaign uses the phenomenon that occurs when you look at the sun and then close your eyes, leaving an ‘after-image’ that can still be seen for several moments afterwards.

A new advert for the car manufacturer, which has been previewed at cinemas in Germany, uses a heavy duty flash designed for lighting film sets that shines through a cardboard stencil right at the end," quoting Niall Firth in UK's Daily Mail. link here
.

5. "CLASSIFIED UFO FILES REVEAL MASKED ALIENS, EXTRATERRESTRIAL WRITING"
"The New Zealand military has released hundreds of previously classified reports detailing claims of unidentified flying object sightings and alien encounters.

The reports, dating from 1954 to 2009, were released Wednesday [Dec. 23] under freedom of information laws after the New Zealand Defence Force removed names and other identifying material," quoting this report on FOX News from News Corp Australian Papers. link here

1. SCIENCE NEWS ABOUT THE HUMAN BODY
A. "AGING ILLS REVERSED IN MICE"
"Scientists have partially reversed age-related degeneration in mice, an achievement that suggests a new approach for tackling similar disorders in people.

By tweaking a gene, the researchers reversed brain disease and restored the sense of smell and fertility in prematurely aged mice. Previous experiments with calorie restriction and other methods have shown that aspects of aging can be slowed. This appears to be the first time that some age-related problems in animals have actually been reversed.

The study was published online Sunday [Nov. 28] in the peer-reviewed journal Nature.

A tiny bone fragment could provide crucial information about the fate of Amelia Earhart, the legendary pilot who disappeared 73 years ago while flying over the Pacific Ocean in a record attempt to fly around the world at the equator.

Collected on Nikumaroro, an uninhabited tropical island in the southwestern Pacific republic of Kiribati, the bone has raised the interest of The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR), which has long been investigating the Earhart mystery, as it may be from a human finger.

I. An RSE student from Spain filed this report:
On December 5th, Spaniards watching Spanish National Television TVE saw "the blessed face of our teacher declaring that we are God. On prime time TV, in a space reserved for the best scientific documentaries, the movie “What the Bleep Do We Know” was broadcast".

J. From the Bathurst, NSW, Australia newspaper about the recently concluded RSE events there:
"THEY came here from all over the world seeking enlightenment.

For the past 10 days Bathurst has been host to 318 students of Ramtha’s School of Enlightenment...

Hard to believe he is still teaching all these years later...

Many call it a cult, but wherever the truth lies there is no denying that those who have spent the past 10 days at CSU are some of the happiest people on the planet."

K. Dirk Mischke, who moved to Tenino from Germany to research opening a branch of a German marketing firm here, was featured in a recent newspaper story about his baritone singing voice joining the Masterworks Choral Ensemble's holiday concert.

IN MEMORIAM
I was with Eastern Airlines in the late 70's & early 80's after Eastern became the launch airline for the Lockheed L-1011.

As the U. S. airlines were all jumping on the wide-body band-wagon, Northwest Orient Airlines (nee Northwest Airlines) chose the DC-10 & their CEO Don Nyrop want a P & W powerplant on his 10's,
the same engine that was on his 747s. That raised many an eyebrow in the industry, as most carriers went with the GE CF-6 to power their DC-10s.
This was also a risky move because if Nyrop wanted to sell those aircraft in the future, would there be a buyer for the only DC-10's powered with a P & W engine.
He did it anyway, saved lots of money with one wide-body engine type and the rest is history.

Nyrop enacted that and so many other great decisions that led his airline to be one oft he world's greats, prior to their 2008 merger with Delta Airlines, Inc.

No matter what anyone says, Nyrop was a legend!

He's in the same league with AA's C. R. Smith, EAL's Rickenbacker, PanAm's Trippe in my view in taking a small, scrappy airline & making a great one for the ages.

Don Nyrop passed Nov. 16th.

I will always remember his genius & continued to be a big fan & Elite flier with Northwest until the merger with Delta!
