KLEINER'S KORNER FOR WEEKS OF OCTOBER 18 & 31, 2010
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"Great minds discuss ideas.
Average minds discuss events.
Small minds discuss people."

Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962)
First Lady of the U. S. 1933-1945 & advocate for civil rights
Quoted in Tulsa World

As we head into the final days prior to America's mid-term elections, this article is important for all to read - and supported by the facts:
"Eight False Things the Public "Knows" Prior to Election Day"
By Dave Johnson of the Campaign for America's Future: link here

1. "IS FREE THINKING A MENTAL ILLNESS?"
"Is nonconformity and freethinking a mental illness? According to the newest addition of the DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders), it certainly is. The manual identifies a new mental illness called “oppositional defiant disorder” or ODD. Defined as an “ongoing pattern of disobedient, hostile and defiant behavior,” symptoms include questioning authority, negativity, defiance, argumentativeness, and being easily annoyed.

The DSM-IV is the manual used by psychiatrists to diagnose mental illnesses and, with each new edition, there are scores of new mental illnesses...

New mental illnesses identified by the DSM-IV include arrogance, narcissism, above-average creativity, cynicism, and antisocial behavior. In the past, these were called “personality traits,” but now they’re diseases," quoting Off the Grid News. link here

2. NEW DISCOVERIES IN THE HUMAN BODY
A. "CELL SURVIVAL PROTEIN DISCOVERY REWRITES IMMUNE SYSTEM STORY"
"A discovery by Walter and Eliza Hall Institute researchers in Melbourne, Australia, reported in the journal Science, is set to rewrite a long-held belief about how the body's immune system establishes its memory.

The findings of Dr Ingela Vikstrom and Associate Professor David Tarlinton, from the institute's Immunology division, centre on immune cells called B cells that produce the antibodies which fight infection," from ScienceDaily. link here

B. "...NEW STUDY SHOWS WALKING PROTECTS BRAIN SIZE, SAVES MEMORY"
"Now, a new study published Wednesday in the journal of the American Academy of Neurology says walking may also save her from dementia.

Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh who studied people in their mid-60s over 13 years found that those who walked six to nine miles a week -- about a mile a day -- had more gray matter and less memory loss than their peers. Gray matter is the part of the brain involved in muscle control, seeing, speaking, hearing and memory.

The relationship between walking earlier in life and having more brain volume later in life was so robust "it astonished us," said author Kirk I. Erickson, a professor of psychology at the University of Pittsburgh. "Physical activity improves your brain and spares your brain," quoting
Julie Sullivan of The Oregonian in Life Extension Daily News: link here
.

3. "ARCTIC OF OLD IS GONE, EXPERTS WARN"
"The Arctic — an area described as Earth's refrigerator because its ice helps keep temperatures cool — continues to warm up and is unlikely to return to earlier conditions, according to an annual report card issued Thursday by top scientists.

The Arctic — an area described as Earth's refrigerator because its ice helps keep temperatures cool — continues to warm up and is unlikely to return to earlier conditions, according to an annual report card issued Thursday by top scientists," quoting MSNBC: link here

4. ICONIC ITEMS FROM HISTORY NOW AVAILABLE
A. "HISTORIC FILM: MARKET STREET 1906"
"Morley Safer reports on a mystery that was solved about a 100-year-old film that we now know was made on San Francisco's Market Street just days before the 1906 earthquake," from CBS News 60 MINUTES.
Ed. Note: This video on the Korner a few months ago, however CBS has now updated that story in amazing detail. link here

B. "AFTER 2000 YEARS, DEAD SEA SCROLLS GO ONLINE"
"It only took a couple of thousand years, but people the world over will soon be able to have a close-up look at one of the greatest archaeological finds of the last century. Earlier today [Oct. 19th) Google and Israel's Antiquities Authority announced plans to collaborate on a project to make the Dead Sea Scrolls available both to scholars and the general public over the Internet," quoting CBS News. link here

C."EX-AGENT - I ALMOST SHOT LBJ HOURS AFTER JFK ASSASSINATION"
"Secret Serviceman pointed gun at new president while on guard outside his home"
"A former Secret Service agent says in his new book that he nearly shot President Lyndon B. Johnson hours after John F. Kennedy's assassination.

In "The Kennedy Detail," Gerald Blaine recalls standing guard outside the Washington home of newly sworn-in President Johnson in the early hours of Nov. 23, 1963.

Blaine heard footsteps approaching. He picked up his submachine gun and, in the darkness, pointed it at the chest of a man who turned out to be Johnson," from the AP on MSNBC: link here
.

5. TWO NOTABLE DEATHS LAST WEEK FROM THE WORLD OF SCIENCE
A. "Benoit Mandelbrot, Father of Fractal Geometry, Dies at 85"
"Benoit Mandelbrot, the father of fractal geometry, has died at the age of 85, the AFP reports. The French-American mathematician discovered mathematical shapes called "fractals," and developed a geometry that was used to analyze naturally occurring shapes that were previously thought unmeasurable...

Fractals are said to be infinitely complex and can be found in things like clouds, snowflakes, and mountain ranges. Physics, geometry, and finance are a few of the many areas to which Mandelbrot applied the theory. According to an article in the U.K.'s Telegraph, Mandelbrot's book "The Fractal Geometry of Nature" has sold more copies than any other book on advanced mathematics," quoting PC mag. link here

B. "Dr. Georges Mathé, Transplant Pioneer, Dies at 88"
"In 1963, four years after treating the physicists, Dr. Mathé shook the medical world by announcing that he had cured a patient of leukemia by means of a bone-marrow transplant. In this case, there was no doubt that he had performed the feat of obliterating the patient’s stem cells and replacing them with a donor’s: the patient’s blood type had changed to that of the donor, the first time this had happened.

Most important, he demonstrated that stem cells injected in a patient not only heal radiation damage but also fight cancer," quoting Douglas Martin in the New York Times: link here

KLEINER'S KORNER FOR WEEK OF OCTOBER 18, 2010
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter."

US black civil rights leader & clergyman

1. "SOUL SURVIVOR, THE REINCARNATION OF A WORLD WAR II FIGHTER PILOT"
"The parents of James Leininger were first puzzled and then disturbed when their two-year-old son began screaming out chilling phrases during recurrent nightmares, such as, "Plane on fire! Little man can't get out!" The centerpiece of a loving family of three, James was a happy, playful toddler who had only just begun stringing together sentences. Determined to understand what was happening to their son, Bruce and Andrea set off on a journey of discovery that was to rock them to their core. For the more they researched the arcane comments and fragmented details little James revealed, the more they were drawn inescapably to a shocking conclusion: that James was reliving the life of James Huston, a World War II fighter pilot who was killed in the battle for Iwo Jima--over 60 years ago!" quoting the website of James's parents new book.

Ed. Note: While I had this story in the Korner years ago, the recently--released book by James's parents riveted me even more than the television piece. I did not sleep on the recent flight to London, rather was engrossed in this book. link here

Pics of James: link here

I cannot say enough about the courage of James's parents Bruce and Andrea Leininger to face the scrutiny in continuing to move forward in search of the truth for their son, when just the pressures from religion to not-go-there would cause most to ignore the whole situation. "Hiding the TV remote and games console controller is a good thing to do to kids if it's the only way to limit the time they spend in front of a screen, according to a study published Monday [Oct. 11].

The study, conducted by researchers from the University of Bristol, found that youngsters who spend hours each day in front of the TV or games console have more psychological difficulties like problems relating to peers, emotional issues, hyperactivity or conduct challenges, than those who don't.

And contrary to what earlier studies have indicated, the negative impact of screen time was not remedied by increasing a child's physical activity levels, says the study, published in the US journal Pediatrics,' quoting the AFP. link here

KLEINER'S KORNER FOR WEEK OF OCTOBER 11, 2010
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"I think these difficult times have helped me to understand better than before how infinitely rich and beautiful life is in every way, and that so many things that one goes around worrying about are of no importance whatsoever."

Baroness Karen von Blixen-Finecke (1885 – 1962),
née Karen Christenze Dinesen
Danish author also known by her pen name Isak Dinesen.
Best known for Out of Africa.

1. STEM CELLS MAKING NEWS
A. "LANDMARK CLINICAL TRIAL FOR STEM CELL THERAPY"
"The world's first clinical trial for stem cell therapy began on Monday [Oct. 11]. The trial is still in its very early stages - only 10 people who have suffered recent spinal cord injuries will be enrolled - but it's still a landmark event...

In at least one sense, the trial is already a victory. The political controversy around stem cells resulted in funding delays for scientific research, and many scientists were afraid that other countries would beat the United States to the trial stage.

Instead, a local company - Geron Corp. of Menlo Park - is running the trial, with American patients and within American borders," quoting the San Francisco Chronicle. link here

B. "COULD STEM CELLS SAVE LEGS?"
"But now, doctors using a patient's own stem cells to try and save her legs.

'We basically take stem cells from their hips to help grow blood vessels,' said Dr. Randall Franz.

Doctors use a needle to remove bone marrow from the hip. The marrow then goes into a centrifuge...

Then doctors inject the stem cells into the leg.

'It creates new, smaller blood vessels that give blood supply to the limb,' said Hankins," quoting Seattle's KING-5 TV. link here
.

2. FABULOUS NEW DISCOVERIES ON THE HUMAN BRAIN
A. "How Handwriting Trains the Brain"
"Using advanced tools such as magnetic resonance imaging, researchers are finding that writing by hand is more than just a way to communicate. The practice helps with learning letters and shapes, can improve idea composition and expression, and may aid fine motor-skill development.

It's not just children who benefit...

Studies suggest there's real value in learning and maintaining this ancient skill, even as we increasingly communicate electronically via keyboards big and small," quoting the Wall Street Journal.
link here

B. "Don't Worry: Happiness Levels Not Set in Stone"
"Don't worry, be happy" may be more than just a wishful mantra. A new study finds that people's happiness levels can change substantially over their lifetimes, suggesting that happiness isn't predetermined by genes or personality...

People's long-term life satisfaction can change, the researchers report today (Oct. 4) in the online early edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences," quoting LiveScience.
link here

C. "Can you change how your genes act?"
"New research suggests we may have the ability to put "bad genes" on good behavior, reducing the risk for cancer and more for ourselves, our kids, even our grandkids, all through everyday habits...

This power comes courtesy of the epigenome, chemical tags that sit on top of and around DNA. The epigenome controls when genes turn on or off and how loudly they express your genetic programming. (If you're blonde, how blonde?) And it's proving much easier to manipulate than genes themselves, says Jean-Pierre Issa, M.D., a leukemia researcher at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Get ready to be the boss of your DNA," quoting Valerie Brown in Self.

3. THE DESTRUCTIVE POWER OF OCEAN WAVES
"THE CLOCK READ midnight when the 100-foot wave hit the ship, rising from the North Atlantic out of the darkness. Among the ocean’s terrors, a wave this size was the most feared and the least understood, more myth than reality—or so people had thought...

But math fails even the experts, because waves in nature do all sorts of bizarre stuff. When Penny Holliday finally got around to studying her data from Discovery’s stormy February 2000 trip, she and a colleague at the National Oceanographic Center in Southampton concluded that most of the higher-than-expected waves the ship encountered were created by an effect known as “resonance.” Resonance is an aspect of nonlinearity that is endlessly complex when scrawled across a whiteboard, but kindergarten-simple when explained by the analogy of a kid pumping his legs on a swing, dramatically boosting his height on each pass. Energy is continually being added to the system, more and more and more, in erratic bursts. Likewise in the North Atlantic, wind energy surged into the waves until they grew to enormous proportions," from The Wave: In Pursuit of the Rogues, Freaks, and Giants of the Ocean. ©2010 by Susan Casey. 4. HOPEFUL SIGNS A SAD AMERICAN SAGA IS COMING TO AN END
Ed. Note: As with the end of racial segregation in the military thrown on the scrapheap of national policies outdated in a "modern" society, so too may we be seeing the end of the military's Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy that has seen so many qualified personnel discharged or living lives in fear of losing their military careers.

By: Igor Volsky in Think Progress: link here

This gut-wrenching story shows the harm & pain this piolicy has caused:
"The last word: A gay soldier's plea"
"How 'don’t ask, don’t tell' erodes what’s best about military life."

5. "THE NEW OIL" - WATER
"Should private companies control our most precious natural resource?"
Around the world, rivers, lakes, and aquifers are dwindling faster than Mother Nature can possibly replenish them; industrial and household chemicals are rapidly polluting what’s left. Meanwhile, global population is ticking skyward. Goldman Sachs estimates that global water consumption is doubling every 20 years, and the United Nations expects demand to outstrip supply by more than 30 percent come 2040.

Proponents of privatization say markets are the best way to solve that problem: only the invisible hand can bring supply and demand into harmony, and only market pricing will drive water use down enough to make a dent in water scarcity. But the benefits of the market come at a price. By definition, a commodity is sold to the highest bidder, not the customer with the most compelling moral claim," from Newsweek: link here

"Group to call on U.S. Government to reveal the facts"
"Witness testimony from more than 120 former or retired military personnel points to an ongoing and alarming intervention by unidentified aerial objects at nuclear weapons sites, as recently as 2003. In some cases, several nuclear missiles simultaneously and inexplicably malfunctioned while a disc-shaped object silently hovered nearby. Six former U.S. Air Force officers and one former enlisted man will break their silence about these events at the National Press Club and urge the government to publicly confirm their reality," quoting Reuters. link here

2. "ATHEISTS, AGNOSTICS MOST KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT RELIGION, SURVEY SAYS"
Mitchell Landsberg of the Los Angeles Times reports,
"If you want to know about God, you might want to talk to an atheist.

Heresy? Perhaps. But a survey that measured Americans' knowledge of religion found that atheists and agnostics knew more, on average, than followers of most major faiths. In fact, the gaps in knowledge among some of the faithful may give new meaning to the term "blind faith."...

American atheists and agnostics tend to be people who grew up in a religious tradition and consciously gave it up, often after a great deal of reflection and study, said Alan Cooperman, associate director for research at the Pew Forum."

Walter Breuning was born on Sept. 21, 1896, in Melrose, Minnesota, and moved to Montana in 1918, where he worked as a clerk for the Great Northern Railway for 50 years...

The Guinness organization and the Gerontology Research Group each have verified Breuning as the world's oldest man and the fourth-oldest person. Three women were born earlier in the same year as Breuning," quoting the AP. link here

Roni Caryb Rabin in the New York Times reports,
"To their surprise, the researchers, sponsored by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, a division of the National Institutes of Health, found that a single session of massage caused biological changes.

Volunteers who received Swedish massage experienced significant decreases in levels of the stress hormone cortisol in blood and saliva, and in arginine vasopressin, a hormone that can lead to increases in cortisol. They also had increases in the number of lymphocytes, white blood cells that are part of the immune system....

The study was published online in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine."
