| KLEINER'S KORNER FOR WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 20, 2010
|
QUOTE OF THE WEEK "We knew the world would not be the same. A few people laughed, a few people cried, most people were silent. I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad-Gita. Vishnu is trying to persuade the Prince that he should do his duty and to impress him takes on his multi-armed form and says, 'Now, I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.' I suppose we all thought that one way or another."
J. Robert Oppenheimer (1904-1967)
"American theoretical physicist and professor of physics at the University of California, Berkeley. He is best known for his role as the scientific director of the Manhattan Project, the World War II project that developed the first nuclear weapons, for which he is often referred to as the 'father of the atomic bomb'," from Wikipedia:

3. "BRAIN'S ANATOMY PREDICTS LEVEL OF INTROSPECTION" "The anatomy of your brain reflects your introspective capacity, or ability to self-judge the merits of your decisions, new research indicates.
The study found that people with stronger reflective, or introspective, ability appear to have a higher volume of gray matter, the outer layer of the brain, in the part of their brains sitting behind their eyes. This region is called the anterior prefrontal cortex...
'In terms of looking at variation across a population of healthy individuals, our study is the first to say how [introspection] might link to structure,' said study researcher Stephen Fleming, a neuroscientist at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging at University College London," reports Wynne Parry in LiveScience:

4. "COMPUTERS SET FOR QUANTUM LEAP" "A new photonic chip that works on light rather than electricity has been built by an international research team, paving the way for the production of ultra-fast quantum computers with capabilities far beyond today’s devices...
Jeremy O’Brien, director of the UK’s Centre for Quantum Photonics, who led the project, said many people in the field had believed a functional quantum computer would not be a reality for at least 25 years.
'However, we can say with real confidence that, using our new technique, a quantum computer could, within five years, be performing calculations that are outside the capabilities of conventional computers,' he told the British Science Festival, as he presented the research.
The breakthrough, published today [Sept. 16] in the journal Science...," quoting Clive Cookson in the Financial Times:

| KLEINER'S KORNER FOR WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 13, 2010
|
QUOTE OF THE WEEK “The problems of the world cannot possibly be solved by skeptics or cynics whose horizons are limited by the obvious realities. We need men [and women] who can dream of things that never were.”
John Fitzgerald Kennedy (1917-1963) 35th President of the United States More about President Kennedy from The White House:

1. THE AMAZING POWER OF MIND AS BODY A. "WOMAN'S PERSISTENCE PAYS OFF IN REGENERATED FINGER TIP" CNN reporter Elizabeth Cohen reports, "Kulkarni, a former human resources manager who is now in law school full time, was accustomed to doing research, but after searching for hours, she still couldn't find any new ideas for reattachment.
She did, however, find something else: stories on "60 Minutes" and "Oprah" about a relatively new procedure called tissue regeneration, which had made amputated finger parts grow back for other patients.
She went to the website for Dr. Stephen Badylak, the University of Pittsburgh physician who helped pioneer the procedure. A little more searching revealed his e-mail address...
Kulkarni's pinky grew back after she persuaded a doctor to administer a procedure she had read about on the internet...
Seven weeks later, a new pinky...
Five lessons learned."

B. "THE MAN WHO SAYS HE HASN'T EATEN OR DRUNK FOR 70 YEARS..." By Tom Rawstorne in UK's Daily Mail: "There are few people, however busy their lives, unable to remember the last meal that they consumed. But Prahlad Jani is one of them.
And the reason is that the last morsel of food that he says passed his lips did so in the early years of World War II.
‘I can’t recall exactly what it was,’ the 82-year-old Indian admits. ‘It was such a long time ago.’
During the 70-odd years since, Mr Jani says he has eaten not so much as a single grain of rice nor consumed a drop of water. And while such an extended gap between meals might be expected to have a fatal impact on the activities of one so deprived, this octogenarian says he’s never felt better...
Tests: 83-year-old Prahlad Jani has twice attended hospital to be watched round the clock by eminent doctors."

2. "GOD NOT LONGER MALE, SCOTTISH EPISCOPAL CHURCH RULES" "A new order of service produced by the Scottish Episcopal Church has caused controversy by removing masculine references to God.
"The new form of worship, which removes words such as "Lord, he, his, him" and "mankind" from services, has been written by the church in an attempt to acknowledge that God is "beyond human gender".
Episcopalian bishops have approved the introduction of more "inclusive" language, which deliberately removes references suggesting that God is of male gender," quoting UK's Telegraph.

3. "ET UFO ARE REAL: BEN RICH LOCKHEED CEO ADMITTED IN HIS DEATHBED" "Ben Rich Lockheed Skunk Works CEO had admitted in his Deathbed Confession that Extraterrestrial UFO visitors are real and U.S. Military travel to stars.
According to article published in May 2010 issue of the Mufon UFO Journal - Ben Rich, the “Father of the Stealth Fighter-Bomber” and former head of Lockheed Skunk Works, once let out information about Extraterrestrial UFO Visitors Are Real And U.S. Military Travel To Stars
What he said might be new to many people today, but he revealed the information before his death in January 1995. His statements helped to give credence to reports that the U.S. military has been flying vehicles that mimic alien craft," quoting UFO Blogger:

D. "China's Great (Quantum) Leap Forward" By Christopher Shay in TIME Magazine: "In May, Chinese scientists announced a demonstration of "quantum teleportation" over 16 kilometers (10 miles), creating what Matthew Luce, a researcher at the Defense Group Inc.'s Center for Intelligence Research and Analysis, calls "secure communications guaranteed by the laws of physics." China is now at the cutting-edge of military communications, transforming the field of cryptography and spotlighting a growing communications arms race...
By changing the photons' quantum states and creating a new, readable pattern not unlike Morse code, they can pass on simple messages or encryption codes. A group of researchers from Tsinghua University and the Hefei National Laboratory for Physical Sciences entangled pairs of photons — linking them so changes to one photon will be instantaneously transferred to the other."

5. HOW THE INTERNET MAKES US STUPID" "The stimulation of the digital age is changing the make-up of our brains, with potentially disastrous results, writes Nicholas Carr: People who read text studded with links, the studies show, comprehend less than those who read words printed on pages. People who watch busy multimedia presentations remember less than those who take in information in a more sedate and focused manner. People who are continually distracted by emails, updates and other messages understand less than those who are able to concentrate. And people who juggle many tasks are often less creative and less productive than those who do one thing at a time.
The common thread in these disabilities is the division of attention," in the Sydney Morning Herald.

6. EXCELLENT SURVIVAL TIPS A. "ARTIST BUILD BACKYARD SURVIVAL SHELTER, HOMEMADE SHOTGUN ROBOT" "Artist Chad Person wasn't about to sit idly by and wait for the coming robot-zombie apocalypse, so he dug up his Albuquerque, N.M., backyard and built himself a custom survival shelter.
Dubbed RECESS (Resource Exhaustion Crisis Evacuation Safety Shelter), Person's project isn't some wonky, conceptual-art stunt, but a genuine reaction to these uncertain times, just like the growing Prepper Movement," quoting Asylum.com.

B. "HOW TO GET WATER FROM A DRILLED WELL WHEN THE POWER IS OFF" Steve Belanger of Countryside Magazine reports, "At the Midwest Renewable Energy Fair last summer, an anonymous visitor dropped a sheet of plans for an interesting-looking simple hand pump on the table at the Countryside booth. We built one.
It consisted of an off-the-shelf foot valve and some PVC pipe and fittings. The only tool needed was a saw, to cut one section of pipe to length. (The water level in the well was at 20 feet. We made the total length of the pipe, including foot valve and fittings, about three feet longer, so the foot valve would be under water and there would still be a foot or so of pipe above the top of the well casing.)."

C. "THE FOREVERLIGHT PANEL" "Describing the Foreverlight Panel is like trying to describe the colour BLUE when you have never seen it. But lets give it a go.
In the daylight it is a boring lime-green 1.5mm thick rigid sheet of plastic that does not appear to do anything. But in the dark, it is a brightly glowing Blue-green 3D matrix panel of light that NEVER stops glowing.
It is the most fail proof light ever invented.
The panel uses NO electricity or other power system you would recognise.
It creates NO, magnetic, electric, RF fields or EMI, it is perfect for areas where you need light but must not have RF, EMI or electrical noise. It continuously takes a little heat out of its surrounding environment (usually the air) and converts it into a useful light. In the wealthy First World because we have electricity readily available, eg. USA, Japan, Australia, UK etc, would consider it to be supplementary to normal lighting, as a backup lighting system."

1. LABOR DAY, 2010 IN THE USA September 6, 2010 “Labor Day is a United States federal holiday that takes place on the first Monday in September. The holiday began in 1882, originating from a desire by the Central Labor Union to create a day off for the "working man". It is still celebrated mainly as a day of rest and marks the symbolic end of summer for many. Labor Day became a national holiday by Act of Congress in 1894,” quoting Wikipedia.
link here
’Labor Day differs in every essential way from the other holidays of the year in any country,’ said Samuel Gompers, founder and longtime president of the American Federation of Labor. ‘All other holidays are in a more or less degree connected with conflicts and battles of man's prowess over man, of strife and discord for greed and power, of glories achieved by one nation over another. Labor Day...is devoted to no man, living or dead, to no sect, race, or nation,” quoting the US Dept. of Labor website.

2. "AAP ADVICE ABOUT SEX MESSAGES IN THE MEDIA" The shocking and alarming news out last week that the USA has the highest teen pregnancy rate in the Western hemisphere brought this release on a study "appearing in the September issue of Pediatrics, the peer-reviewed, scientific journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)":
"Today there are more reasons than ever to pay attention to media messages about sexuality and contraception. Teens spend more than seven hours a day on average with various forms of media, often without adults around. Television shows and Web sites that are popular with teens—and the way sex is portrayed in those venues—could be important factors in the initiation of sexual intercourse. The U.S. has the highest teen pregnancy rate in the Western hemisphere, and a recent study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revealed that 1 in 4 teenagers has had a sexually transmitted infection. Just as inappropriate media messages can be detrimental to teens, socially responsible programming can be a powerful vehicle for sexual health education. A revised policy statement from the American Academy of Pediatrics, “Sexuality, Contraception, and the Media,” published in the September 2010 print issue of Pediatrics (published online Aug. 30), includes updated recommendations for pediatricians and parents."
