KLEINER'S KORNER FOR WEEK OF JUNE 28, 2010
Dear Readers;

This is to give you advance warning that I have given much thought about slimming down this news weekly, as this has become too time consuming. As we approach the 9th anniversary of this newsletter, look for a formal announcement of changes soon.

1. "A DOCTORED HISTORY: AN INTERVIEW WITH WILLIAM F. PEPPER"
ED. NOTE: This story should be required reading by all Americans. Pepper is my hero!

"The official story goes that King was murdered by a lone merciless assassin, James Earl Ray, in a symbolic act of hate that reinforced our country's bitter racial conflicts. The story is continually told to us by our media and educational institutions. It is part of our collective national narrative. And, it's entirely false.

The real history, uncovered by Dr. William F. Pepper, former attorney to the King family and to the now-deceased Ray, is much more sinister. When I spoke with Pepper on the eve of the 42nd anniversary of King's death, he stated unequivocally that factions of the United States government were involved in the assassination and that "it was effectively a policy decision."

That's a hard pill to swallow. When it comes to American heroes, King is on par with such prominent figures as the founding fathers, Abraham Lincoln and Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Like Gandhi, King has become a human rights icon of global significance. The notion that our government actively worked to end his life is so consequential, it would need to be authoritatively substantiated for us to even consider it, which is exactly what Dr. Pepper achieved with his quarter-century long investigation...

It is an interesting commentary on mainstream media that of course the trial is basically unknown and most Americans are not even aware that it was held," quoting Calvin Sloan in Truthout: link here
.

2. "THIS IS YOUR BRAIN. AGING"
"Science is reshaping what we know about getting older. (The news is better than you think.)"
"The recognition that so much of the difference in brain function is due to something other than age has ignited a market in interventions that might postpone, mitigate, or even prevent some of the decline," quoting Sharon Begley is NEWSWEEK’s science editor and the author of The Plastic Mind: New science reveals our extraordinary potential to transform ourselves and Train Your Mind, Change Your Brain: How a New Science Reveals Our Extraordinary Potential to Transform Ourselves.

.

3. "SINGING 'REWIRES' DAMAGED BRAIN"
"Teaching stroke patients to sing "rewires" their brains, helping them recover their speech, say scientists.

By singing, patients use a different area of the brain from the area involved in speech.

If a person's "speech centre" is damaged by a stroke, they can learn to use their 'singing centre' instead.

Researchers presented these findings at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in San Diego...

Gottfried Schlaug, a neurology professor at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School in Boston, US, led the trial," quoting Victoria Gill on the BBC.

4. MARS & VENUS IN THE NEWS
A. "7TH-GRADERS DISCOVER MYSTERIOUS CAVE ON MARS"
"The students were participating in the Mars Student Imaging Program"

"A group of seventh-graders in California has discovered a mysterious cave on Mars as part of a research project to study images taken by a NASA spacecraft orbiting the red planet.

The 16 students from teacher Dennis Mitchell's 7th-grade science class at Evergreen Middle School in Cottonwood, Calif., found what looks to be a Martian skylight — a hole in the roof of a cave on Mars.

The intrepid students were participating in the Mars Student Imaging Program at the Mars Space Flight Facility at Arizona State University. The program allows students to frame a research question and then commission a Mars-orbiting camera to take an image to answer their question,"
quoting Clara Moskowitz in Space.com. link here

B. "OCEANS ON VENUS MIGHT HAVE BEEN HABITABLE"
"Probe finds evidence that Venus and Earth aren't as dissimilar as they seem"

"Venus, currently one of the most inhospitable places in the solar system, may once have had an ample supply of water — possibly even oceans — and been a potentially habitable place when it was young, a new study suggests.

The finding comes from the European Space Agency (ESA)'s Venus Express satellite currently orbiting our neighboring planet. The probe is providing new evidence that Venus and Earth aren't as dissimilar as they seem," quoting Space.com. link here
.

5. LUCY'S 'GREAT-GRAND-FATHER' FOUND"
"Anthropologists say they have discovered the 3.6 million-year-old partial skeleton of a creature that came from the same species as Lucy, but was 400,000 years older and at least as good at walking upright. Their analysis suggests that upright walking, the trademark trait for humans and their extinct kin, goes back further in time than some might have assumed.

This skeleton, described in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, has a much longer name than Lucy: It was dubbed Kadanuumuu, which means "big man" in Ethiopia's Afar language," quoting
MSNBC's Cosmic Log: link here

6. IN HEALTH NEWS
A. "ARE CELLS [CELL PHONES] THE NEW CIGARETTES?"
"Just as parents now tell their kids that, believe it or not, there was a time when nobody knew that cigarettes and tanning were bad for you, those kids may grow up to tell their kids that, believe it or not, there was a time when nobody knew how dangerous it was to hold your phone right next to your head and chat away for hours.

We don’t yet really know the physical and psychological impact of being slaves to technology. We just know that technology is a narcotic," quoting Maureen Dowd in the New York Times. link here

B. "HEALTH, WELLNESS AND PERSONAL TRANSFORMATION"
IN THE SUMMER, 2010 ISSUE OF SUPERCONSCIOUSNESS MAGAZINE
"We live in a world scope-locked on what our bodies look like. Are we thin enough? Does our physique conform to societies’ ideals? Popular television shows like The Biggest Loser® emphasize diet and exercise as the path to a healthier life, but the question arises: Are diet, exercise and body image all there is to achieving health?

If not, what then is the essence of wellness?" by Danielle Graham, Editor-in-Chief.
link here

C. "COFFEE'S MYSTERIOUS BENEFITS MOUNT"
"From lowered cancer risks to a sharper memory, more studies are showing that coffee is good for you - but why?

Regular coffee drinkers have a 39 percent decreased risk of head and neck cancer, according to a new study published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention. Those who drank an estimated four or more cups a day had significantly fewer cancers of the mouth and throat than non coffee drinkers, the study found.

'Coffee contains more than a thousand chemicals, some of which have antioxidant and antimutagenic activities,' Mia Hashibe, assistant professor of medicine at the University of Utah and the study's lead researcher, told Life's Little Mysteries," By Remy Melina of LiveScience.com: link here

D. "STEM CELLS REVERSE BLINDNESS CAUSED BY BURNS"
"Dozens of people who were blinded or otherwise suffered severe eye damage when they were splashed with caustic chemicals had their sight restored with transplants of their own stem cells — a stunning success for the burgeoning cell-therapy field, Italian researchers reported Wednesday [June 23]...

In the study, published online by the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers took a small number of stem cells from a patient's healthy eye, multiplied them in the lab and placed them into the burned eye, where they were able to grow new corneal tissue to replace what had been damaged. Since the stem cells are from their own bodies, the patients do not need to take anti-rejection drugs," by Alicia Chang, AP Science Writer: link here

In response to the story last week of Hawai'i's Iolani Palace as the only royal residence on US soil, a Korner reader in Kona sent this, "...there is another palace in Hawaii/US and it is the summer residence of the late monarchy in Kona . It is less grandiose than the one on Oahu but it is listed as a Palace."
The Huliheʻe Palace is located in historic Kailua-Kona, Hawaiʻi. link here

1. "LOOKING FOR ALIEN DNA"
"Zecharia Sitchin says he's willing to stake everything he's written about alien astronauts on DNA tests that could be performed on the 4,500-year-old remains of a high-ranking Sumerian woman. It's the latest - and possibly the last - cause celebre for a fringe celebrity..

The 90-year-old Sitchin was born in the Soviet Union, grew up in Palestine and now lives in a New York apartment. He has written 14 books about way-out subjects, starting out with claims that a "12th planet" named Nibiru swung past Earth thousands of years ago and dropped off alien visitors who were looked upon as gods by Middle Eastern cultures. Sitchin says these aliens were the Annunaki mentioned in Sumerian scriptures, and the Nephilim mentioned in the Bible," quoting MSNBC's Cosmic Log. link here
.

2. "QUANTUM DEVICES READY FOR TAKE-OFF"
"One of the concepts that's just beginning to take off is the idea that it should be possible to extend the quantum world from the realm of the super-small to a scale large enough to allow for the construction of actual devices for information processing.

A paper published in Thursday's [March 17,. 2010] issue of Nature takes a big leap in that direction by describing the creation of a quantum information device big enough to be seen with the naked eye. The device, which looks like a computer chip, links together a superconducting quantum-bit circuit with a tiny mechanical resonator capable of vibrating nearly 6 billion times a second," quoting MSNBC's Cosmic Log. link here

KLEINER'S KORNER DOUBLE EDITION FOR WEEKS OF JUNE 7 & 14, 2010
Greetings after a being off last week.

This Korner is a double issue, so is longer than most, due to the multiple breaking stories in the last 2 weeks. I want to share with you the books I read on our holiday in Kauai. Each touched me deeply in their own way:

1. "American Conspiracies: Lies, Lies, and More Dirty Lies that the Government Tells Us" by Gov. Jesse Ventura.
Ed. Note: Gov. Ventura has meticulously researched some of the what all of us suspect are the great cover-ups of our time with his unique perspective as a former US Navy SEAL and former Governor, speaking things you have never heard any governor dare say. I could not put this book down. link here

2. "The Autobiography of Malcolm X"
Ed. Note: After reading that this was Gov. Ventura's hero and why, I had to read this man's own words as told to Alex Haley. This was an amazing man who changed his mind through experience. See why he was the noted leader he was. A must read! link here

3. "Sh*t My Dad Says" by Justin Halpern
Ed. Note: Laughed so hard my face hurt. Drop what you're doing & get this book now! link here

4. "Robert Kennedy and the death of American Idealism"
Ed. Note: Professor Joseph Palermo penned a graphic biography of this amazing man's life. Gov. Ventura provides a new perspective on Kennedy's assassination in his book. link here

And on our last day in Hawai'i, we stopped in Honolulu & went to Pearl Harbor & Iolani Palace. Most Americans do not know that the United States annexed Hawai'i by force and ousted their Queen, a nation that was then a monarchy. Iolani Palace is the only royal residence on US soil. In Honolulu, we watched a video-montage of the making of a new film about the take-over of the sovereign nation of Hawai'i by the USA. The Movie: Princess Kaiulani (she is a hero to me!).

About the film from San Francisco Chronicle: link here
Movie preview: link here
Where you can see the film so far: link here

Yes, on this Flag Day (June 14) in the USA, I will stand with the people in Hawai'i when they vote for independence from the United States of America.

1. "HAPPINESS MAY COMES WITH AGE, STUDY SAYS"
A. "A large Gallup poll has found that by almost any measure, people get happier as they get older, and researchers are not sure why...
The results, published online May 17 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, were good news for old people, and for those who are getting old. On the global measure, people start out at age 18 feeling pretty good about themselves, and then, apparently, life begins to throw curve balls. They feel worse and worse until they hit 50. 2. THE HUMAN MIND - IN THE NEWS
A. "EINSTEIN'S BRAIN UNLOCKS SOME MYSTERIES OF THE MIND"
"In the 55 years since Albert Einstein's death, many scientists have tried to figure out what made him so smart.

But no one tried harder than a pathologist named Thomas Harvey, who lost his job and his reputation in a quest to unlock the secrets of Einstein's genius. Harvey never found the answer. But through an unlikely sequence of events, his search helped transform our understanding of how the brain works," from National Public Radio (NPR). link here

B. "EXPLORING MUSIC'S HOLD ON THE MIND"
"Three years ago, when Oxford University Press published “Music, Language, and the Brain,” Oliver Sacks described it as “a major synthesis that will be indispensable to neuroscientists.” The author of that volume, Aniruddh D. Patel, a 44-year-old senior fellow at the Neurosciences Institute in San Diego, was in New York City in May. We spoke over coffee for more than an hour and later by telephone. An edited and condensed version of the conversations follows," quoting the New York Times. link here

3. "MOUNTAINS LURK UNDER ANTARCTICA ICE"
"The first detailed pictures of one of the planet's last unexplored frontiers — a vast mountain range that rivals the Alps in majesty buried underneath the ice of Antarctica — were revealed by scientists this week.

At the International Polar Year conference in Oslo, Norway, scientists unveiled new radar images of an area of the mountains the size of the state of New York.

'What we'd shown before was an estimate based on gravity data — a little bit of a coarse resolution tool," said Robin Bell, a senior research scientist at Columbia's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in New York. "What we showed at this meeting was the radar data. It's like going from using a big, fat Sharpie [pen] to using a fine-tipped pencil.'

What the pictures reveal, Bell said, is spectacular: a dramatic landscape of rocky summits, deep river valleys, and liquid, not frozen, lakes, all hidden beneath the ice," quoting OurAmazingPlanet. link here

The groups says "Gratzel cells" are significant because they are cheaper than other types of technology that seek to capture energy from the sun," quoting CNN.

The new findings intensify a debate about so-called “inerts” — the solvents, preservatives, surfactants and other substances that manufacturers add to pesticides.
