1. MEMORIAL DAY 2010 IN THE USA

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN HERE IN MAY, 2007:
This weekend is our Memorial Day holiday when America pauses to honor those that have given their lives in service to their country. The Yelm Community Blog host & Kleiner's Korner editor/publisher appreciates and honors all of those who have served to defend, protect, and preserve our country from outside invaders. Memorial Day was first called Decoration Day “to honor Union soldiers who died during the American Civil War. After World War I, it expanded to include those who died in any war or military action,” quoting Wikipedia. link here

On this Memorial Day, this writer’s thoughts and prayers are with the families that have had to endure monumental suffering at the hands of American Presidents & Congress by losing sons and daughters in deceptive wars that had little or nothing to do with defending this country and where THEY get swept aside in the “fog of war." These are families like Pat Tillman’s mother, who explained her story for CBS News 60 Minutes May 4, 2008. Mr. Tillman was an NFL football great who was inspired to enlist to serve his country after 9/11 and was killed by friendly fire in Afghanistan, with the Pentagon covering-up the truth and using Tillman’s name to fabricate more deceptions. link here

The US Constitution states only Congress can declare war and the last time Congress did that was in 1942. link here

This is not just a time of bar-b-ques & beer, celebrating schools letting out and the start of Summer. This is a time to pause, remember, honor and contemplate the bounty we have and those who defended our rights to have it all!

2. X-RAY BULLET OUT OF THE BLUE"
"In the past, astronomers have used the Hubble Space Telescope and the Spitzer Space Telescope to create classic pictures of the supernova remnant known as N49, 14,000 light-years away in the constellation Dorado. Now the latest picture from NASA's Chandra X-Ray Observatory has picked up something extra: a "bullet" zooming away at about 5 million miles an hour.

3. "MICHELANGELO'S SECRET MESSAGE IN THE SISTINE CHAPEL"
"In 1990, physician Frank Meshberger published a paper in the Journal of the American Medical Association deciphering Michelangelo's imagery with the stunning recognition that the depiction in God Creating Adam in the central panel on the ceiling was a perfect anatomical illustration of the human brain in cross section. Meshberger speculates that Michelangelo surrounded God with a shroud representing the human brain to suggest that God was endowing Adam not only with life, but also with supreme human intelligence.

Now in another panel The Separation of Light from Darkness, Suk and Tamargo have found more. Leading up the center of God's chest and forming his throat, the researchers have found a precise depiction of the human spinal cord and brain stem," quoting the Huffington Post.

4. "AIR FORCE TREATING WOUNDS WITH LASERS AND NANOTECH"
"Forget stitches and old-school sutures. The Air Force is funding scientists who are using nano-technology and lasers to seal up wounds at a molecular level...

Last year, the military’s research agency, Darpa, requested proposals for instant injury repair using adult stem cells, and Pentagon scientists are already doing human trials of spray-on skin.

Massachusetts General Hospital researchers Irene Kochevar, Robert Redmond and dermatologist Sandy Tsao are behind the nano-tech project, which has been funded by various agencies within the Department of Defense for eight years. They’ve successfully tried out the nano-sutures in lab experiments and a clinical trial of 31 patients in need of skin incisions," quoting WIRED. link here
.

5. "GROWING VEGETABLES UPSIDE DOWN"
"Growing crops that dangle upside down from homemade or commercially available planters is growing more popular, and its adherents swear they’ll never come back down to earth...

The advantages of upside-down gardening are many: it saves space; there is no need for stakes or cages; it foils pests and fungus; there are fewer, if any, weeds; there is efficient delivery of water and nutrients thanks to gravity; and it allows for greater air circulation and sunlight exposure.

While there are skeptics, proponents say the proof is in the produce," quoting the New York Times.

6. "ATOMS BRING QUANTUM COMPUTING CLOSER"
"Researchers say they've made a key step toward the next age of computing, making the world's smallest transistor.

The researchers, based at the University of New South Wales and University of Wisconsin-Madison, have constructed the tiny electronic component through the manipulation of a small number of atoms.

The breakthrough, which appears in the journal Nature Nanotechnology, is seen as another step towards the world's first quantum computer.

Moore's Law, which has driven technological change at a breakneck pace for decades, states that the number of transistors on a microprocessor doubles every year or two.

But Professor Andrew White of the University of Queensland, says that progress is beginning to slow," quoting Australia's ABC. link here

7. LASERS PENETRATE JUNGLE TO REVEAL MAYAN GREEN BUILDINGS
"The ancient Maya designed and maintained sustainable cities long before 'building green' became a modern term," said Diane Chase, who has worked as co-director of the Caracol Archaeological Project beside her husband for the past 25 years. Her conclusion is based on the extensive agricultural terracing LiDAR revealed," quoting Science Daily. link here

D. "There has been some misunderstanding about families who have recently lost their loved ones.
In the past, many people have chosen to make donations to the Masters Fund in memory of their loved ones.
However, if you wish your monies to go directly to surviving family members, you should make your contributions to those families and not to The Masters Fund.
The Master's Fund's main purpose is to help those suffering from catastrophic diseases, those who are hungry and in need of food, and those in need of an education, thus addressing the issue of illiteracy.
We very much appreciate your kind generosity, whether to the families and/or to the Masters Fund."

Sincerely,
Sherrie and Fred Loertscher, trustees

KLEINER'S KORNER FOR WEEK OF MAY 24, 2010
My colleague Jaime Leal-Anaya is originally from the Mexicali, Mexico area and has been reporting the real situation there since the big quake last April, a story the public is not getting. He compiled these photos so we can see what happened and get a feel for the current situation. Please forward this story & link to let others know what is happening there, as this news is being overshadowed in the media by other disasters. link here

The area was again rocked by 2 moderate earthquakes May 22. From the AP: link here

1. ARE ELECTROMAGNETIC FREQUENCIES CAUSING HUMAN AILMENTS?
A. "RADIO FREQUENCY(RF); THE REAL REASON PEOPLE DON'T SLEEP WELL ANYMORE"
"Only during the deepest state of sleep called Delta-rhythm (not rapid-eye-movement aka REM) do brain, heart, respiration and organ systems slow to sufficient extent that there is excess ATP (body's universal energy) available to pool inside the cells. This pooled energy, upon reaching threshold, "triggers" physiological and neurological repair, hormone synthesis, immune function and memory consolidation. Insufficient ATP pooling, insufficient nighttime repair, hormone production, memory. Very simple...

Not enough Delta stage sleep (2 hours minimum, 3-4 hours optimum) and there is simply not enough pooled energy to perform sufficient restore/repair processes; or they shut down altogether. The result is a body that breaks down quickly and ages prematurely both mentally and physically...

Now, the primary reason you don't sleep well anymore.

In a nutshell, there is an increasingly dense, invisible soup of information carrying radio frequency - radiofrequency (RF) electromagnetic fields literally broadcast through our bodies by the telecommunications industry twenty four hours per day, 7 days per week.

It isn't stress of modern life, finances or evolution. Plain and simple, it is propagating RF pollution and the denser the field (either closer to a cell mast or in midst of more and more cell masts) the worse your sleep and overall wellbeing. Studies that fail to show immediate results are not designed well or looking for the right effects," quoting Earth Pulse Technologies. link here

B. "UNCERTAINITY OVER MOBILE PHONE AND BRAIN CANCER LINKS"
"Largest study to date finds increased tumour risk for heavy mobile phone users but says 'biases and errors' make use of these findings impossible

Researchers have failed to find a conclusive link between mobile phone usage and increased brain tumour risk.

Although there is, as yet, no known biological mechanism by which mobile phones could cause cancer, an international study was set up in 2000 to look into the links.

The Interphone study, the largest of its kind, covered almost 13,000 people across 13 countries and compared frequency of exposure and mobile phone use of people with four types of brain tumours - tumours of the brain (glioma and meningioma) and of the acoustic nerve (schwannoma) and partotid gland - against healthy volunteers," quoting The Ecologist.

2. SCIENCE NEWS AIDING THE BODY
A. "INGREDIENT IN DARK CHOCOLATE COULD GUARD AGAINST STROKE"
"Something in dark chocolate seems to help protect the heart, and now researchers say they have identified the molecular mechanism by which a compound found in cocoa can guard against the damage of a stroke.

The compound, a flavanol called epicatechin, triggers two built-in protective pathways in the brain according to a report published online last week in the Journal of Cerebral Blood Flow & Metabolism,"
quoting HealthDay in Bloomberg Businessweek. link here

B. "NEW WEIGHT LOSS PILL PROMISES TO FIGHT HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE, DIABETES"
"When it comes to weight loss, we've always been taught there's no such thing as a quick fix. That might be about to change with Qnexa, which could be the next blockbuster drug to fight not only obesity, but also high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol.

'We believe we have the first product that actually treats the causes of these diseases,' said Peter Tam, president of VIVUS, a Silicon Valley biotech company which developed Qnexa," from KING-5 TV News, NBC in Seattle: link here

3. TWO AMAZING SCIENCE STORIES NOT ON THE FRONT PAGES
A. "MEET SPIDER GOAT - THE DNA-ENHANCED WEB-FLINGING NANNY THAT MAY ONE DAY KNIT BONES"
"ON a farm in Wyoming, USA, goats are being milked for their spider webs.

And if that sounds bizarre, molecular biologist Randy Lewis claims that within two years, spider silk milked from goats could replace your body's tired or strained tendons and ligaments - maybe even bones.

Professor Lewis and his team at the University of Wyoming have successfully implanted the silk-making genes from a golden orb spider into a herd of goats and are now, finally, producing one of nature's strongest products in useable quantities.

The technology is cutting edge, but the science isn't. Spider silk has been used for centuries to dress wounds with varying degrees of success, but the problem has until now been how to get it.

"We needed a way to produce large quantities of the spider silk proteins," Prof Lewis told news.com.au," quoting Australia's News.com.

Vicente Torrent, a specialist in veterinary genetics, says the newborn calf, named Got, is an exact replica of a muscular, horned specimen of the type matadors face in bullrings.

The animal was unveiled Wednesday [May 19], a day after being born. It now weighs 53 pounds," from the AP: link here

"Cancer is a case of betrayal. A cell that once cooperated with other tissues turns traitor, stealing nutrients to propagate itself. The fact that tumor cells are largely identical to normal cells makes recognizing such Benedict Arnolds extremely difficult.

David Raulet investigates how the immune system overcomes this fifth column advantage. A Berkeley professor of immunology and pathogenesis, he researches how lymphocytes called natural killer (NK) and T cells distinguish between healthy and compromised tissues. He is identifying which cellular signals goad NK and T cells to attack, and how modulating the production of these triggers could help the body heal itself from cancer, infection, and even chronic inflammatory diseases," from Science Matters @ UC Berkeley. link here

The Vatican will make the arguments in a motion to dismiss a federal lawsuit on jurisdictional grounds filed in Louisville, Kentucky, but it could affect other efforts to sue the Holy See.

The Vatican's U.S. attorney, Jeffrey Lena, said it will include a response to claims that the 1962 document "Crimen Sollicitationis" — Latin for "crimes of solicitation" — barred bishops from reporting abuse to police," quoting the AP. link here

Two Toronto-area Canadian citizens coming to Niagra Falls to shop in America, an hour away, experienced some testosterone-laden US border patrol agents, who said,

"The United States Is “The Greatest Purveyor of Violence in the World Today”
“A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death.”

KLEINER'S KORNER FOR WEEK OF MAY 17, 2010
Leading off this week is one heart-warming story!

"Modern Pied Piper Cheats Death"

"Every time 70-year-old Andy Mackie draws a breath, it's music to his ears - whether there's a harmonica there or not. As CBS News correspondent Steve Hartman reports, Mackie's just glad to be alive.... Mackie, a Scottish-born retired horse trainer, lives in a camper in northwest Washington state - he lives there, even though technically -- medically -- he should have died long ago. After his ninth heart surgery, Mackie's doctors had him on 15 different medicines. But the side effects made life miserable. So one day he quit taking all 15 and decided to spend his final days doing something he always wanted to do. He used the money he would have spent on the prescriptions to give away 300 harmonicas, with lessons included. 'I really thought it was the last thing I could ever do,' he says. And when he didn't die the next month, he bought a few hundred more... It's now 11 years and 13,000 harmonicas later... 'I can't explain the joy,' Mackie says. 'I don't think Bill Gates feels any richer inside than I do. He believes he's still living today because of the kids and the music.'" quoting the CBS Evening News. link here

"A powder nick-named "Pixie Dust" is being used to save the limbs of war heroes who have been wounded in Afghanistan.

Surgeons have already used the dust to save several soldiers so badly mutilated that they were at risk of amputation.

Made from pig bladders it has the ability to help the human body grow new tissue to replace large areas of a leg or arm destroyed by blast damage...

Pig bladders contain a substance called extra cellular matrix, which is made up largely of collagen...

Professor Steve Wolf one the US's top plastic surgeons -is carrying out a trial in Houston, Texas on victims of the Afghan fighting and has already treated several young soldiers whose limbs were so badly damaged they were unable to walk or faced amputation," quoting UK's Daily Mail.

By Mary McCann for MastersConnection LLC© 2010 All Rights Reserved
Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor was a 37-year-old Harvard-trained and published brain scientist when a blood vessel exploded in her brain. Through the eyes of a curious neuroanatomist, she watched her mind completely deteriorate whereby she could not walk, talk, read, write, or recall any of her life. Because of her understanding of how the brain works, her respect for the cells composing her human form, and an amazing mother, Jill completely recovered her mind, brain and body," quoting MastersConnection. link here

B. TELESCOPE DISCOVERS SURPRISING HOLE IN SPACE"
"A vast hole in space has been unexpectedly discovered in a part of the universe thought to be packed with a cloud of dense gas and dust — the latest in a string of cosmic finds by the European Herschel infrared space telescope.

The surprising hole in space has provided astronomers with a new glimpse at the end of the star-forming process.

"No one has ever seen a hole like this," said study team member Tom Megeath of the University of Toledo in Ohio. "It's as surprising as knowing you have worms tunneling under your lawn, but finding one morning that they have created a huge, yawning pit."

6. DEBT & FIAT CURRENCIES GOING THE WAY OF THE PAST?
A. "THE WESTERN WORLD KEEPS SPENDING ITS WAY TO DISASTER"
"Indeed, it names 11 more: Austria, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Britain – and the United States. Without “drastic measures,” BIS [Swiss-based Bank of International Settlements (BIS), the oldest international financial institution in the world,] says, all of these countries will hit a wall of debt.

When the senior economists at BIS warn 12 of the richest countries on Earth that they must take drastic action to reduce debt, you know that it’s time to check the air bags. The only thing you don’t know, that you need to know, is the precise time of the crash. The lesson is already obvious: Governments can’t drive recklessly, use only the accelerator for braking and not eventually crash," quoting Canada's Globe & Mail. link here

C. "The No. 1 Reason Gold Could Enter Mania Phase Soon"
"On February 18, 2009 the Financial Times published one of the most important articles nobody read.

The article's headline was Gold primed to become "mania asset."

The gist of the article was something I've been telling people for a long time: Gold – more so than any asset right now – has the potential to experience a mania phase... one like we saw in Internet stocks from 1997 through 2000.

A mania phase is a period in an asset's lifecycle marked by leaps of 10% or 20% in a month... 100% or 300% in a year... and 500% or more over the course of several years," quoting Daily Wealth.

D. "What If Doug Casey Is Right?"
"Gold is once again above $1,200 and making new highs. And yet, Doug Casey thinks we’re just getting started, estimating gold could touch $5,000 before this is all over. A titillating thought, to be sure, but... how likely is that?...

One way to test Doug’s thinking is to look at other simmering trouble spots that would similarly impact gold should they boil over," quoting Jeff Clark, Editor of Casey Research.

It wasn’t long before the Pentagon started dreaming up military applications, and futurists were predicting that our soldiers would all get ray guns. Well, not quite. "Most water-resistant materials use chemicals such as Teflon to repel water, but a University of Florida professor has developed a material that resists water by imitating the texture and placement of spider hairs.

The shape and varied distribution and lengths of spider hair make the spider more water-resistant, says Wolfgang Sigmund, a materials engineering professor at the Gainesville campus. The hairs are arranged in such a way that when water comes in contact with them, the water forms a tiny bead and rolls off," quoting USA Today.

B. "ENHANCING THE PLACEBO"
"Placebo treatments are more powerful if your doctor believes in them. They are also more powerful if the doctor tells you so. In one study, for example, patients who had just come out of surgery were given a saline infusion, and — whenever they asked for it — the pain killer buprenorphine. However, some patients were told the saline infusion was a powerful painkiller, others that it might be one, while a third group wasn’t told anything. Over the course of three days, those in the “know-nothing” group asked for more buprenorphine than those in the “maybe” group, who in turn asked for more than those told they were getting a real drug," quoting the New York Times.

"At least since a Nigerian with incendiary underpants tried to blow up a flight to Detroit last Christmas and failed, would-be terrorists have learned they don't have to hit their primary targets to score a blow to the American psyche; they just have to take a shot, and America's hyperventilating media frenzy will do the rest. The Christmas incident rattled the Obama administration and shook the nation's confidence," quoting Newsweek.

7. "THE COSTS OF THE MILITARY-INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX"
"In 1961, President Dwight Eisenhower gave his now famous farewell speech about the military industrial complex. He said we must never let the weight of the disastrous rise of misplaced power endanger our liberties or democratic process. He said, 'Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together.'

What would he say today? In 1938, the U.S. had 14 overseas bases. Today, there are over 800 bases in 156 countries. The U.S. military spends $1.75 billion per day. In February, President Obama announced the largest military budget since World War II. The baseline budget, plus the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan, and the 30,000 extra troops that the President is sending to Afghanistan equals $741 billion – and it’s expected to grow in the coming years," quoting Your Call on Truthout. link here

8. TWO INSIGHTFUL VIEWS ON THE ECONOMY
A. "Bracing for dark times head"
John Richardson
Esquire.com

"Factories are humming, consumers have resumed spending, and the Dow Jones industrial average is again above 11,000, said John Richardson. America is back, right? Not according to the Elliott Wave theorists, "a cult of chart obsessives who try to predict the stock market by following trends in social mood." Known for correlating stock prices to everything from skirt lengths to the popularity of horror movies, the Elliott Wave folks believe that "the intuitive popular idea that economic conditions generate moods is exactly wrong."

Changes in the national mood, say the theorists, precede changes in the economy. Under this theory, today's national mood, with its "increased feelings of anger, fear, and polarization," presages a second, cataclysmic dip in the stock market. That, in turn, could usher in a dark period in American history, in which "the pressure of gloom gets so big that violent and secessionist impulses can break out of control." Civil war, they say, is "a distinct possibility." Sure, the predictions of the Elliott Wave crowd have been wrong before. But they do have a point about the national mood, no? (The Week)

Will someone tell these guys to go home? I'm not sure I could have less respect for a particular stock market interpretation than I do for Elliott Wave theorists. If they really believe in their nonsense predictions they should be buying gold bars and holing themselves up in the North Arctic for the next couple decades," as quoted in The Week magazine of April 30, 2010.

9. BEES IN THE NEWS - AGAIN!
A. "FEARS FOR CROPS...SHOW SCALE OF BEE CATASTROPHE"
"Disturbing evidence that honeybees are in terminal decline has emerged from the United States where, for the fourth year in a row, more than a third of colonies have failed to survive the winter.

The decline of the country's estimated 2.4 million beehives began in 2006, when a phenomenon dubbed colony collapse disorder (CCD) led to the disappearance of hundreds of thousands of colonies. Since then more than three million colonies in the US and billions of honeybees worldwide have died and scientists are no nearer to knowing what is causing the catastrophic fall in numbers.

The number of managed honeybee colonies in the US fell by 33.8% last winter, according to the annual survey by the Apiary Inspectors of America and the US government's Agricultural Research Service (ARS)," quoting UK's Guardian. link here

10. "INT'L WHALING COMMISSION (IWC) PROPOSAL TO LEGITIMIZE COMMERCIAL WHALING"
"But on April 22 – on the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, of all days – the IWC released a proposal that, if adopted, would suspend the moratorium on commercial whaling by authorizing Norway, Iceland, and Japan to kill whales for profit. Adding insult to injury, it would legitimize Japan’s current whaling in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary around Antarctica – a whale sanctuary created by the IWC itself in 1994 – and authorize new whaling in Japanese coastal waters. This proposal would reverse nearly three decades of progress to "save the whales." quoting the NRDC.

KLEINER'S KORNER FOR WEEK OF MAY 5, 2010
Happy Mother's Day (May 9th) to the givers of all of our lives!

About Mother's Day from Wikipedia: link here

Read the Mother's Day Proclamation 1870 By Julia Ward Howe link here

1. STORIES ON THE HUMAN BRAIN
A. "BOOSTING BRAIN POWER"
"More people, especially college students trying to improve their grades, are illegally boosting their brain power by using prescription "smart drugs" like Ritalin and Aderall, meant for those with attention deficit disorders. Katie Couric reports," on CBS News 60 MINUTES which aired April 25, 2010.
Ed. Note: See the interview of the Univ. of Kentucky student!
link here

B. "ELECTRIC CURRENTS BOOST BRAINPOWER"
"Connecting a battery across the front of the head can boost verbal skills, says a team from the US National Institutes of Health.

A current of two thousandths of an ampere (a fraction of that needed to power a digital watch) applied for 20 minutes is enough to produce a significant improvement, according to data presented this week at the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience, held in San Diego," from Nature News. link here

C. "WATCHING A LIVING BRAIN IN THE ACT OF SEEING -- WITH SINGLE-SYNAPSE RESOLUTION"
"Pioneering a novel microscopy method, neuroscientist Arthur Konnerth and colleagues from the Technische Universitaet Muenchen (TUM) have shown that individual neurons carry out significant aspects of sensory processing: specifically, in this case, determining which direction an object in the field of view is moving. Their method makes it possible for the first time to observe individual synapses, nerve contact sites that are just one micrometer in size, on a single neuron in a living mammalian brain...

The scientists report these results in the latest issue of the journal Nature. Looking ahead, they say their method opens a new avenue for exploration of how learning functions at the level of the individual neuron," from Science Daily.

2. "THE DEPRESSING NEWS ABOUT ANTIDEPRESSANTS"
"Studies suggest that the popular drugs are no more effective than a placebo. In fact, they may be worse....

'There is no question that the safety and efficacy of antidepressants rest on solid scientific evidence," as psychiatry professor Richard Friedman of Weill Cornell Medical College recently wrote in The New York Times. But ever since a seminal study in 1998, whose findings were reinforced by landmark research in The Journal of the American Medical Association last month, that evidence has come with a big asterisk. Yes, the drugs are effective, in that they lift depression in most patients. But that benefit is hardly more than what patients get when they, unknowingly and as part of a study, take a dummy pill—a placebo. As more and more scientists who study depression and the drugs that treat it are concluding, that suggests that antidepressants are basically expensive Tic Tacs," quoting NEWSWEEK. link here
.

3. PALESTINIAN GIRLS INVENT 'SEEING' WALKING STICK FOR BLIND"
"Along with classmates Aseel Sha'ar and Nour El Arda, she [Palestinian teenager Aseel Abu Leil] invented an obstacle-detecting walking stick. They entered the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair alongside 6 million global contestants, and were chosen to be among 1,500 finalists to attend the world's largest science fair next month in San Jose, Calif.," from McClatchy Newspapers: link here
.

4. WAS POLISH OFFICIALS' PLANE CRASH SABOTAGE?
Ed. Note: Whenever I hear of a plane crash involving government officials, I immediately am drawn to think the cause is sabotage & persons aboard had knowledge of or were a threat to the status-quo. A plane crash is the murder-weapon of choice these days, to do away with high-profile people, it seems.
Too many crashes have been suspicious, including & not limited to:
- Sen. John Tower: link here
- Sen. Paul Wellstone: link here
- Panama General Torrijos: link here
- Commerce Secretary Ron Brown: link here
- Jaime Roldós Aguilera, President of Ecuador: link here

When I heard that the investigation of the Polish plane crash in Russia would be handled by Russia's Putin and that no bodies or personal belongings were found in the wreckage, my alarm bells went off.

Now, comes these reports:
Jane Burgermeister reports on the discrepancies of the Polish president's flight crash including footage taken immediately after the crash. This is well-worth the 9 minutes to become educated. While the text is in Dutch, click the video, which is in English.

5. "TAKING A CLOSE LOOK AT FACEBOOK"
"When Alexander Solzhenitsyn was arrested by Stalin's political police, his captors got lost.

Solzhenitsyn, a war hero (Stalin distrusted and hated war heroes), showed them how to read the map and get to where they were going.

That's what millions of Americans are doing now.

Putting far more personal information that they should about themselves online for easy mining," quoting Brasscheck. link here

6. POTENTIALLY THE USA'S LARGEST OIL DISASTER
Ed. Note: These stories highlight the stupidity of drilling oil a mile below sea-level off the pristine California & Florida coasts, as has been proposed. Had this happened off Santa Barbara or Sarasota, Florida, this would have destroyed those beautiful beaches & tourism for decades. As it is, Florida Panhandle's famous, white sands are going to be devastated, as well as the fishing areas & seabeds.

7. "BAY BRIDGE: COMPETING AGAINST TIME"
"Byron Pitts reports from the construction site of the future Bay Bridge, where there's a race to complete the new, earthquake-resistant span alongside the old structure, which authorities fear cannot stand up to the next large earthquake," quoting CBS News' 60 MINUTES which aired April 25, 2010.
Ed. Note: this is a very interesting story: link here
.

8. "HAWKING: ALIENS MAY POSE RISKS TO EARTH"
"British physicist Stephen Hawking says aliens are out there, but it could be too dangerous for humans to interact with extraterrestrial life.

Hawking claims in a new documentary titled "Into the Universe With Stephen Hawking" that intelligent alien life forms almost certainly exist — but warns that communicating with them could be 'too risky,'" quoting MSNBC.

Ed. Note: The is an outlandish comment from Mr. Hawking. His comment precludes the fact that aliens have been coming here for thousands of years. In more modern times, world governments do not want the public to know this has been happening and the media spin to deny the existence of aliens here on Earth is amazing. And, what makes Mr. Hawking think that the aliens that do make their way here could not have wiped us out already, if they wanted? link here

And about new Discovery Channel documentary "Into the Universe with Stephen Hawking,"

9. "CAN WORLD'S LARGEST LASER ZAP EARTH'S ENERGY WOES?
"Scientists at a government lab here are trying to use the world's largest laser -- it's the size of three football fields -- to set off a nuclear reaction so intense that it will make a star bloom on the surface of the Earth.

The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's formula for cooking up a sun on the ground may sound like it's stolen from the plot of an "Austin Powers" movie. But it's no Hollywood fantasy: The ambitious experiment will be tried for real, and for the first time, late this summer.

If they're successful, the scientists hope to solve the global energy crisis by harnessing the energy generated by the mini-star.

The lab's venture has doubters, to be sure. Nuclear fusion, the type of high-energy reaction the California researchers hope to produce, has been a scientific pipe dream for at least a half-century. It's been pitched as a miracle power source. But it hasn't yielded many results," quoting CNN. link here
