1. "BRITISH BOY BECOMES FIRST IN THE WORLD TO HAVE STEM CELL TRANSPLANT"
"The landmark operation involved injecting the scaffold of a windpipe, taken from a dead donor, with stem cells from the boy before implanting it in his throat.

The stem cells were removed from the boy's bone marrow and were ready for use just four hours later.
The cells trigger regrowth to create a normal windpipe without any of the risks of normal transplantation such as the organ being rejected by the body.

The operation took place at Great Ormond Street Hospital, in London, on Monday [March 15] and the boy is breathing by himself and able to speak normally...

Professor Martin Birchall, head of translational regenerative medicine at University College London, said: 'We believe it's a real milestone,'" quoting UK's Telegraph. link here
.

2."RESEARCHERS TURN MOSQUITOES INTO FLYING VACCINATORS"
"Here's a study to file under "unworkable but very cool." A group of Japanese researchers has developed a mosquito that spreads vaccine instead of disease. Even the researchers admit, however, that regulatory and ethical problems will prevent the critters from ever taking wing—at least for the delivery of human vaccines...

A group by led by molecular geneticist Shigeto Yoshida of Jichi Medical University in Tochigi, Japan, identified a region in the genome of Anopheles stephensi-a malaria mosquito-called a promoter that turns on genes only in the insects' saliva. To this promoter they attached SP15, a candidate vaccine against leishmaniasis, a parasitic disease spread by sand flies that can cause skin sores and organ damage. Sure enough, the mosquitoes produced SP15 in their saliva, the team reports in the current issue of Insect Molecular Biology. And when the insects were allowed to feast on mice, the mice developed antibodies against SP15," quoting Science Magazine.

3. "WHY A BROKEN HEART REALLY DOES HURT"
"A broken heart really does hurt, scientists claim.

Researchers have found a genetic link between physical pain and social rejection, which means that breaking up with a partner really can be painful.

Psychologists at the University of California, Los Angeles say the human body has a gene which connects physical pain sensitivity with social pain sensitivity," quoting UK's Telegraph. link here
.

4. "'MAGIC BULLET' COULD MAKE IT EASIER TO TREAT CANCER"
"A new type of genetic "magic bullet" could make it easier to treat cancers in sensitive areas, scientists believe.

The treatment uses genes wrapped in nanoparticles to target tumours.

Tests in mice show that the tiny packages selectively destroy cancer while leaving healthy cells unharmed...

Lead scientist Dr Andreas Schatzlein, from Cancer Research UK and the School of Pharmacy in London, said: 'Gene therapy has a great potential to create safe and effective cancer treatments but getting the genes into cancer cells remains one of the big challenges in this area,'" quoting UK's Telegraph.

5. "HOW MUCH SLEEP YOU NEED COULD BE DOWN TO ONE GENE"
"Margaret Thatcher, who famously got by with just four hours sleep a night as Prime Minister, may carry a special 'awake' gene as scientists find some people are genetically programmed to survive on less than six hours a night.

Researchers have identified a gene mutation that appears to be at least partly responsible for the fact that the people carrying it require a few hours less sleep than the usual eight...

Ying He and colleagues at the University of California studied an extended family in which a mother and daughter regularly sleep for an average of roughly six hours a night while the other members needed more than eight...

The authors, who published their findings in Science, said the genes could offer a useful new model for studying human sleep," quoting UK's Telegraph. link here
.

6. INTRODUCING A TECHNOLOGY KNOWN AS 'QUANTUM DOTS'"
"InVisage Technologies, based in Menlo Park, Calif., has spent more than three years trying to build a proprietary film that coats the image sensors used in cellphone cameras and allows them to capture more light. The film stands as a rare commercial use of an exotic semiconductor material called a quantum dot.

Jess Lee, the chief executive of InVisage, said the company’s lab tests had convinced him that within two years cellphone companies would be able to offer cameras that work about four times better than today’s cameras, particularly in low light...

Rather than trying to refine the silicon technology, InVisage turned to quantum dots to build what it calls Quantum Film, a layer of semiconductor material that gathers light better than silicon, Mr. Lee said.

Researchers have spent years working on quantum dots with little success. They are essentially semiconductor particles about a nanometer — or a billionth of a meter — in size. Technologists want to control the physical properties of the quantum dots to make them behave a certain way," quoting the New York Times. link here

7. "NEW ANCESTOR? SCIENTISTS PONDER DNA FROM SIBERIA
"In the latest use of DNA to investigate the story of humankind, scientists have decoded genetic material from an unidentified human ancestor that lived in Siberia and concluded it might be a new member of the human family tree.

The DNA doesn't match modern humans or Neanderthals, two species that lived in that area around the same time — 30,000 to 50,000 years ago," quoting the AP.

8. "ARE GREEDY WATER BOTTLERS STEALING YOUR CITY'S DRINKING WATER?"
"Bottled water giants are pilfering water from rural towns and cities, while their products are trashing the planet and putting a hole in our pockets. It's time to call it quits.

It took six years for residents of tiny McCloud, California, to give Nestle Waters North America its walking papers. The water bottler had hoped to build a 1 million square-foot facility in the town of less than 2,000 and was given a backroom 50-year contract (renewable for an additional 50 years) to annually take 1,250 gallons per minute of delicious spring water from the town, hunkered in the shadow of Mount Shasta, and unlimited groundwater. But after years of opposition from community and environmental groups, Nestle scrapped its plans and left with its tail between its legs," quoting AlterNet: link here
.

9. "STUDY: LAST SUPPER PAINTINGS SUPERSIZE THE FOOD"
"The food in famous paintings of the meal has grown by biblical proportions over the last millennium, researchers report in a medical journal Tuesday [March 23].

Using a computer, they compared the size of the food to the size of the heads in 52 paintings of Jesus Christ and his disciples at their final meal before his death.

If art imitates life, we're in trouble, the researchers conclude. The size of the main dish grew 69 percent; the size of the plate, 66 percent, and the bread, 23 percent, between the years 1000 and 2000.

Supersizing is considered a modern phenomenon, but 'what we see recently may be just a more noticeable part of a very long trend,' said Brian Wansink, a food behavior scientist at Cornell University," quoting the AP. link here
.

10. WAITING FOR THE END OF THE WORLD: GEORGIA'S 30-YEAR STONE MYSTERY"
"The nearly 20-foot high series of granite slabs known as the Georgia Guidestones are inscribed with a series of admonitions for a future "Age of Reason." Billed as "America's Stonehenge," it's an astronomically complex, 120-ton relic of Cold War fears, built to instruct survivors of an Armageddon that the mystery man feared was all too near.

The identity of the man who called himself "R.C. Christian" is a secret that Wyatt Martin, the banker who acted as his agent in Elberton, vows to take to his grave," quoting CNN. link here

KLEINER'S KORNER FOR WEEK OF MARCH 22, 2010
I received many comments on last week's story on new research indicates that a male's Y chromosome is evolving far faster than the rest of the human genetic code.
Most were similar in style to this, "The Y chromosome HAS to evolve more rapidly in order to catch up with the X."
LOL.

1. CELL PHONES MAKE NEWS - AGAIN!
A. "HOW SAFE IS YOUR CELL PHONE?"
"In March, Maine's legislature will begin debating a bill she submitted that would require manufacturers to put a warning label on every cell phone sold in the state declaring, 'This device emits electromagnetic radiation, exposure to which may cause brain cancer.' Her warning would continue, 'Users, especially children and pregnant women, should keep this device away from the head and body.'...

For those of you now eyeing your cell phones suspiciously, it's worth noting that both the National Cancer Institute and the World Health Organization say there isn't evidence to support the assertion that cell phones are a public-health threat. But a number of scientists are worried that there has been a dangerous rush to declare cell phones safe, using studies they feel are inadequate and too often weighted toward the wireless industry's interests. An analysis published by University of Washington neurologist Henry Lai determined that far more independent studies than industry-funded studies have found at least some type of biological effect from cell-phone exposure," quoting TIME Magazine. link here

B. "NEWSOM BACKS RADIATION LABELS ON CELL PHONES"
"San Francisco would become the first city in the country to require that cell phone retailers label the devices with the level of radiation they emit under a controversial proposal being discussed at the Department of the Environment and endorsed by Mayor Gavin Newsom.

There is no scientific consensus that cell phones pose health hazards, and the Federal Communications Commission is adamant that any cell phone legally sold in the United States is safe for consumer use," quoting the San Francisco Chronicle.
[Ed. Note: The evidence is mounting cell phone exposure is not safe, regardless of what our government & the cell phone industry says.] link here
.

2. "FIRST QUANTUM EFFECTS SEEN IN A VISIBLE OBJECT"
"Does Schrödinger's cat really exist? You bet. The first ever quantum superposition in an object visible to the naked eye has been observed.

Aaron O'Connell and colleagues at the University of California, Santa Barbara, did not actually produce a cat that was dead and alive at the same time, as Erwin Schrödinger proposed in a notorious thought experiment 75 years ago. But they did show that a tiny resonating strip of metal – only 60 micrometres long, but big enough to be seen without a microscope – can both oscillate and not oscillate at the same time. Alas, you couldn't actually see the effect happening, because that very act of observation would take it out of superposition," quoting New Scientist: link here
.

3. "1 GENE LOST - 1 LIMB REGAINED? SCIENTISTS DEMONSTRATE MAMMALIAN REGENERATION THROUGH SINGLE GENE DELETION"
"A quest that began over a decade ago with a chance observation has reached a milestone: the identification of a gene that may regulate regeneration in mammals. The absence of this single gene, called p21, confers a healing potential in mice long thought to have been lost through evolution and reserved for creatures like flatworms, sponges, and some species of salamander. In a report published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers from The Wistar Institute demonstrate that mice that lack the p21 gene gain the ability to regenerate lost or damaged tissue," quoting PhysOrg: link here

And this:
"HUMANS COULD REGROW BODY PARTS LIKE SOME AMPHIBIANS"
"Regrowing amputated limbs, broken backs and even damaged brains could one day be a reality after scientists discovered a gene that is key to the almost magical ability," quoting UK's Telegraph: link here
.

4. "THE WORLD'S ONLY IMMORTAL ANIMAL"
"The turritopsis nutricula species of jellyfish may be the only animal in the world to have truly discovered the fountain of youth.

Since it is capable of cycling from a mature adult stage to an immature polyp stage and back again, there may be no natural limit to its life span. Scientists say the hydrozoan jellyfish is the only known animal that can repeatedly turn back the hands of time and revert to its polyp state (its first stage of life).

The key lies in a process called transdifferentiation, where one type of cell is transformed into another type of cell. Some animals can undergo limited transdifferentiation and regenerate organs, such as salamanders, which can regrow limbs. Turritopsi nutricula, on the other hand, can regenerate its entire body over and over again. Researchers are studying the jellyfish to discover how it is able to reverse its aging process.

Because they are able to bypass death, the number of individuals is spiking. They're now found in oceans around the globe rather than just in their native Caribbean waters. "We are looking at a worldwide silent invasion," says Dr. Maria Miglietta of the Smithsonian Tropical Marine Institute," quoting the Mother Nature Network. link here
And this from UK's Telegraph: link here

5. "40,000-YEAR-OLD TOOLS FOUND AT CONSTRUCTION SITE"
"It's being dubbed "Tasmania's Valley of the Kings." At the site for a proposed freeway overpass, archaeologists have uncovered what they say are the earliest southernmost artifacts of human life.

Still in the initial stages of excavation, a team of archaeologists unearthed thousands of artifacts near the town of Brighton on Australia's island of Tasmania, including stone tools that belonged to ancient Aboriginal tribes.

The researchers, using a process called optically stimulated luminescence, were stunned by preliminary estimates that the oldest artifacts may date back 40,000 years, more than twice as old as expected," quoting AOL. link here

6. "WHY PREGNANT FILM FANS SHOULD STICK TO HAPPY MOVIES"
"Scientists have discovered that unborn babies respond to their mother's mood while she is watching a movie - and become quiet and still if the film is sad.

In a bizarre experiment, foetuses threw their arms around when their mothers watched a feel-good clip from The Sound of Music - but became subdued during a sad scene from The Champ...

Researchers have no idea how the babies pick up on their mothers' emotions, but suspect that the rush of hormones triggered by an emotional film are transmitted indirectly to the foetus.

The findings, reported today in New Scientist magazine, add to the evidence that a pregnant mother's mood and stress levels can affect her unborn child," quoting UK's Daily Mail.

7. "STUDY SHOWS NAPS RESULT IN INCREASED LEARNING CAPACITY"
"UC Berkeley Freshman Jesus Quiroz said he averages six hours of slumber on any given weeknight. But a quick catnap often provides him with the sleep he said is needed to get him through the day.

'My schedule is pretty demanding,' he said. 'I feel better, more refreshed and more clearheaded.'

Though afternoon napping may not seem to be the most productive use of time, a new study by a research team including Matthew Walker, a campus assistant professor of psychology, corroborates Quiroz's claim, finding that one hour of sleep in the middle of the day results in increased learning capacity," quoting the Daily Californian, the independent, student-run newspaper serving UC Berkeley. link here

1. "MEN MORE EVOLVED? Y CHROMOSOME STUDY STIRS DEBATE"
"Women may think of men as primitive, but new research indicates that the Y chromosome — the thing that makes a man male — is evolving far faster than the rest of the human genetic code.

A new study comparing the Y chromosomes from humans and chimpanzees, our nearest living relatives, show that they are about 30 percent different. That is far greater than the 2 percent difference between the rest of the human genetic code and that of the chimp's, according to a study appearing online Wednesday [Jan. 13. 2010] in the journal Nature...

'The Y chromosome appears to be the most rapidly evolving of the human chromosomes,' said study co-author Dr. David Page, director of the prestigious Whitehead Institute in Cambridge and a professor of biology at MIT. 'It's an almost ongoing churning of gene reconstruction. It's like a house that's constantly being rebuilt,'" quoting the AP.

It is then snipped into even smaller chunks, ready for the complex chemical process to begin.

The pieces are put in a furnace and heated.

In simple terms, carbon and calcium are added.

The wood is then further heated under intense pressure in another oven-like machine and a phosphate solution is introduced.

After about 10 days, the rattan wood has been transformed into the bone-like material.

The team is lead by Dr Anna Tampieri," quoting the BBC: link here

"Exerting delicate control over a pair of atoms within a mere seven-millionths-of-a-second window of opportunity, physicists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison created an atomic circuit that may help quantum computing become a reality...

With fellow physics professor Thad Walker, Saffman successfully used neutral atoms to create what is known as a controlled-NOT (CNOT) gate, a basic type of circuit that will be an essential element of any quantum computer. As described in the Jan. 8 issue of the journal Physical Review Letters, the work is the first demonstration of a quantum gate between two uncharged atoms," quoting ScienceDaily.

B. "TWO OF OLDEST IN THE WORLD DIE ON SAME DAY"
"Mary Josephine Ray, who was certified as the oldest person living in the United States, died Sunday [March 7] at age 114 years, 294 days. Her granddaughter Katherine Ray said she died at a nursing home in Westmoreland, New Hampshire, but was active until about two weeks before her death....

Ray died just hours before Daisey Bailey, who was 113 years, 342 days. That's according to L. Stephen Coles, a director of the Gerontology Research Group, which tracks and studies old people and certifies those 110 or older, called supercentenarians.

Bailey, who was born March 30, 1896, died in Detroit. Her family said she had suffered from dementia. ...

The Gerontology Research Group says that until her death, Ray was the oldest person in the United States and the second-oldest in the world. She was also recorded as the oldest person ever to live in New Hampshire.

The oldest living American is Neva Morris, of Ames, Iowa, at 114 years, 216 days.

The oldest person in the world is Japan's Kama Chinen. She is 114 years, 301 days," quoting the AP.

1. "THE HEAT OVER BUBBLING ARCTIC METHANE"
"One of the great challenges in assessing the meaning of changes in Arctic climate and other environmental conditions is putting today’s observations in long-term context. This is as true for the bubbling emissions of methane from the frozen, but warming, sea bed as for sea ice around the North Pole. Two recent studies of methane emissions from frozen sea-bed sediments, including one published in Science and described in The Times today [March 5], found substantial bubbling flows of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, were reaching the atmosphere. In its news release, the National Science Foundation, which helped underwrite the research, described the emissions as taking place "at an alarming rate,'" quoting the New York Times. link here

3. "STEM CELL GLUE SAVES CLIMBER'S LEG"
"A climber who was warned he faced the amputation of a limb has had his leg saved by a new stem cell technique....

Orthopaedic surgeon Anan Shetty removed stem cells from the bone marrow in his patient's hip.

These were mixed with a new collagen gel called Cartifill to make a paste, which was smeared into the fractures. They finally fixed his leg in a metal cage to gently squeeze the bones together....

The cage was removed at the beginning of December, six months after the stem cell procedure.

Mr Shetty described how he had put all his weight on Mr Kent's leg, but the bones remained solid.

'He has really surprised us. This is an amazing technique,' he added.

'He won't be able to run for about a year, but after 18 months his bones will have healed completely. I'm sure he'll be able to go back and rock climb again.'

The Cartifill collagen gel has been invented by an orthopaedic surgeon from South Korea, Professor Seok Jung Kim, who has helped Mr Shetty to pioneer a series of procedures," quoting Sky News.

KLEINER'S KORNER FOR WEEK OF MARCH 1, 2010
Dear Readers;

No story was as a surprise to me as last week's headline with such little-noticed coverage:
"Pope sounds warning over airport body scans"
"Benedict XVI cites need to protect 'the human person in their integrity'"

Read the whole story from Canada's CBC: link here

1. "'BUY FARMLAND AND GOLD,' ADVISES DR DOOM"
"The world’s most powerful investors have been advised to buy farmland, stock up on gold and prepare for a “dirty war” by Marc Faber, the notoriously bearish market pundit, who predicted the 1987 stock market crash.

The bleak warning of social and financial meltdown, delivered today in Tokyo at a gathering of 700 pension and sovereign wealth fund managers.

Dr Faber, who advised his audience to pull out of American stocks one week before the 1987 crash and was among a handful who predicted the more recent financial crisis, vies with the Nouriel Roubini, the economist, as a rival claimant for the nickname Dr Doom.

Speaking today, Dr Faber said that investors, who control billions of dollars of assets, should start considering the effects of more disruptive events than mere market volatility.

“The next war will be a dirty war,” he told fund managers: 'What are you going to do when your mobile phone gets shut down or the internet stops working or the city water supplies get poisoned?'"
quoting UK's Times. link here
.

2. "VAST ICEBERG MAY ALTER OCEAN CURRENTS"
"An iceberg the size of Luxembourg has broken off from a glacier in Antarctica after being rammed by another giant iceberg, scientists said Friday, in an event that could affect ocean circulation patterns.

The Mertz glacier iceberg is among the largest recorded for several years, at about two-thirds the size of Rhode Island.

Oceans act like a giant flywheel for the planet's climate by shifting heat around the globe via myriad currents above and below the surface.

Massom said the shearing off of the ice tongue and the presence of the Mertz and B-9B icebergs could affect global ocean circulation.

The area is an important zone for the creation of dense, salty water that is a key driver of major worldwide currents.

Experts said with part of the glacier gone, the area could fill with sea ice, which would disrupt the ability for the dense and cold water to sink.

This sinking water is what spills into ocean basins and feeds the global ocean currents with oxygen," quoting MSNBC: link here

3. "IS A DOLPHIN A PERSON?"
"Are dolphins as smart as people? And if so, shouldn't we be treating them a bit better than we do now? Those were the topics of discussion at a session on the ethical and policy implications of dolphin intelligence here today at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (which publishes ScienceNOW)," quoting ScienceNOW.

4. ORCA NETWORK RELEASES COMMENTS ON SEA WORLD KILLER WHALE TRAGEDY
"What’s best for Tillikum now, and what have we learned?"
"The terrible tragic death of veteran trainer Dawn Brancheau at Sea World Florida has suddenly generated a nationwide public examination of our feelings about captive orca shows...

Now that we’ve had a few days to digest the multitude of facts and opinions, what have we learned about orcas, and what’s next for Tillikum? What happens to the orcas, so exquisitely evolved to move great distances in vast surroundings as lifelong members of complex social worlds, when they are removed from their natural settings and families, or born in concrete bowls, and confined for life in minuscule, featureless cells?"
Ed Note: This is an excellent assessment!

5. "PLACEBO'S ACTIVATE BRAIN'S 'HEAL SWITCH'"
"Can the act of simply taking a pill make you feel better, regardless of what's in it?

That's the idea behind the placebo effect...

'At the core, placebo is about the mind-brain interaction so we know that there's lots of psychological components in placebo therapy, that's patients' beliefs, expectations, desire for improvement in their symptoms,' he said.

He has published a review of the clinical and ethical considerations of placebo treatment in the scientific journal, the Lancet.

One of the key conclusions is that there is not just one placebo effect, but a combination of many.

Researchers found it is not what is in the sugar pill or fake injection that makes patients feel healthier, but the act itself of receiving treatment that switches on the brain to heal," quoting Australia's ABC news: link here

6. "BYE BYE AMERICAN PIE"

7. "CELL PHONE TRACKING: THE NEW CONSTITUTIONAL CRISIS"
"If you own a cell phone, you should care about the outcome of a court case that 'could well decide whether the government can use your cell phone to track you - even if it hasn't shown probable cause to believe it will turn up evidence of a crime.'

That was the warning issued to the public by several major civil liberties organizations as they appeared in federal court in Philadelphia to argue for more privacy protections in the use of cell phones as tracking devices by law enforcement agents.

The case is at the heart of the constitutional crisis now being played out in the US federal court. Civil liberties groups are asking the court to require that the government show probable cause before it can track your whereabouts.

The groups are the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the ACLU of Pennsylvania, and the Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT)," quoting Truthout.

.

10. "IN BROOKHAVEN COLLIDER, SCIENTISTS BRIEFLY BREAK A LAW OF NATURE"
"Physicists said Monday [Feb. 15] that they had whacked a tiny region of space with enough energy to briefly distort the laws of physics, providing the first laboratory demonstration of the kind of process that scientists suspect has shaped cosmic history.

The blow was delivered in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, or RHIC, at the Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island, where, since 2000, physicists have been accelerating gold nuclei around a 2.4-mile underground ring to 99.995 percent of the speed of light and then colliding them in an effort to melt protons and neutrons and free their constituents — quarks and gluons. The goal has been a state of matter called a quark-gluon plasma, which theorists believe existed when the universe was only a microsecond old," quoting the New York Times. link here

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"All national institutions of churches, whether Jewish, Christian or Turkish,
appear to me no other than human inventions,
set up to terrify and enslave mankind,

"...author, pamphleteer, radical, inventor, intellectual, revolutionary, and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States"

Quoted from the second Age of Reason, the treatise supporting deism.
