2. IMMORTALITY ON THE HORIZON? A. "CAN SCIENCE MAKE IMMORTALITY A REALITY?" "Some scientists are looking into ways to extend our life expectancy. NBC's Keith Miller reports," on Today on NBC on September 3rd.
link here
Aubrey de Grey, a Cambridge University geneticist, tells Keith Miller he can foresee a day when aging is a thing of the past," on MSNBC September 24th.

B. "IMMORTALITY PREDICTED WITHIN 20 YEARS" "American inventor and futurist Ray Kurzweil says that technologies are growing at such a rapid rate that we could replace all our organs — and even our blood cells — with robotic replacements.
'I and many other scientists now believe that in around 20 years we will have the means to reprogramme our bodies' stone-age software so we can halt, then reverse, ageing,' Mr Kerzweil wrote in The Sun...
The author, who Forbes magazine once named "the ultimate thinking machine", said humans would be able to pull off amazing physical and mental feats with the aid of mechanical upgrades," quoting NineMSN.

3. SCIENTISTS LOOKING AT POTENTIAL TIME TRAVEL IS POSSIBLE "A group of scientists is looking into the possibility that time travel could become a reality. Keith Miller reports," on Today on NBC September 9th:
link here
And: "Professor Ron Mallett a professor at the University of Connecticut is working on building the world's first time machine," from Today on NBC September 24th.

4. "STUDY: EARTH IS OUTSIDE OF 'SAFE OPERATING SPACE'" "We are on the verge of pushing nature into a state of instability like nothing humanity has seen before, according to a study published in the journal Nature.
The study, which attempted for the first time to come up with real numbers for a set of conditions beyond which Earth may not be able to recover, found that we may have already crossed several tipping points...
The climate researchers, for example, determined that nature will remain in balance only as long as carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere remain below 350 parts per million, yet CO2 concentrations currently measure about 387 parts per million.
'What we're talking about here is truly scary in a lot of ways,' Foley told Discovery News. 'We're talking about changes in the environment at a global scale that would change this planet into something we have never seen in all of human history. It's not the end of the world, but it's the end of the world as we know it,'" quoting the Discovery Channel.
link here .
5. SCIENTISTS LOOKING AT CLONING CREATURES DEAD FOR MILLENNIUM "Experts are looking into the possibility of cloning creatures that have been dead thousands of years. NBC's Keith miller reports," for Today on NBC.
link here
Geneticist Tom Gilbert of the University of Copenhagen talks to Keith Miller about how scientists might be able to resurrect a wooly mammoth.

6. "THE DEKA ARM "New technology is making it possible for amputees to pick up small objects they never thought they would master thanks to the biggest innovation in prosthetic arms since WW II. Scott Pelley reports," quoting CBS News 60 Minutes. Re-aired from Spring, 2009 and worth a repeat.
link here .
7. "MYSTERIOUS RUINS MAY HELP EXPLAIN MAYAN COLLAPSE" "Hidden in the hilly jungle, the ancient site of Kiuic (KIE-yuk) was one of dozens of ancient Maya centers abandoned in the Puuc region of Mexico's Yucatan about 10 centuries ago. The latest discoveries from the site may capture the moment of departure.
'The people just walked away and left everything in place,' says archaeologist George Bey of Millsaps College in Jackson Miss., co-director of the Labna-Kiuic Regional Archaeological Project. 'Until now, we had little evidence from the actual moment of abandonment, it's a frozen moment in time,'" quoting USA Today:
link here .
8. "NEW THEORY FOR WHY WE CRY" "'Crying is a highly evolved behavior,' said researcher Oren Hasson, an evolutionary biologist at Tel Aviv University in Israel. 'My analysis suggests that by blurring vision, tears lower defenses and reliably function as signals of submission, a cry for help, and even in a mutual display of attachment and as a group display of cohesion.'
The shedding of tears due to emotions is unique to humans. In the past, researchers suggested that crying helps carry stressful chemicals away from the body, or that it simply makes us feel better, or that it lets babies signal health problems.
Now Hasson points out that when tears blur vision, they could readily handicap aggressive behavior. As such, tears reliably signal vulnerability, a strategy that can emotionally bind others closer to you...
Hasson detailed his research in the journal Evolutionary Psychology," quoting US News & World Report.
link here .
9. "BABY SIGNING: BRIDGING THE COMMUNICATIONS GAP" "At 6 months babies are capable of understanding and communicating but their ability to speak doesn’t develop till they’re 12 to 18 months. That’s where the signs come in. From as early as 6 months, babies can make signs to let you know what they’re thinking. So the earlier you start, the earlier you can ‘talk’ to your baby," quoting Baby Signers.

10. "NEW JERSEY WOMAN CELEBRATES 100TH BIRTHDAY - AT WORK! "Astrid Thoenig got dressed, went to work and sat at her desk smiling Thursday as she slid her finger gently under the envelope flap of yet another identical birthday card. They don't make that many that say "Happy 100th."
Thoenig was interrupted by a steady stream of deliverymen bringing bouquets, chocolate-dipped strawberries and stacks of cards to the Thornton Insurance Co. in Parsippany where she's been answering phones, keeping financial records, handling payroll and typing up documents for more than 30 years...
Thoenig says "thinking young" has helped her take a century's worth of technological changes in stride. The daughter of Swedish immigrants, she credits her strong constitution, a wonderful family and getting up every day to get dressed and go to work with keeping her mind sharp...
Her current job is her favorite — working alongside her son, John Thornton, and grandson Peter at the family-owned insurance company," from the AP:

1. "DO BRAINS SHRINK AS WE AGE?" "As we get older, our brains get smaller, or at least that's what many scientists believe. But a new study contradicts this assumption, concluding that when older brains are "healthy" there is little brain deterioration, and that only when people experience cognitive decline do their brains show significant signs of shrinking.
The results suggest that many previous studies may have overestimated how much our brains shrink as we age, possibly because they failed to exclude people who were starting to develop brain diseases, such as dementia, that would lead to brain decay, or atrophy.
'The main issue is that maybe healthy people do not have as much atrophy as we always thought they had,' said Saartje Burgmans, the lead author of the study and a PhD candidate at Maastricht University in the Netherlands," quoting LiveScience.

2. "ICE CREAM CAN REALLY CONTROL YOUR BRAIN" "A U.S. study by UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas has found that fat from certain foods such ice cream and burgers heads to the brain.
Once there, the fat molecules trigger the brain to send messages to the body's cells, warning them to ignore the appetite-suppressing signals from leptin and insulin, hormones involved in weight regulation — for up to three days.
'Normally, our body is primed to say when we've had enough, but that doesn't always happen when we're eating something good,' said researcher Deborah Clegg in a statement.
'What we've shown in this study is that someone's entire brain chemistry can change in a very short period of time. Our findings suggest that when you eat something high in fat, your brain gets "hit" with the fatty acids, and you become resistant to insulin and leptin.
'Since you're not being told by the brain to stop eating, you overeat.'
The researchers also found that one particular type of fat — palmitic acid which is found in beef, butter, cheese and milk, is particularly effective at instigating this mechanism.
The study was performed on rats and mice but the scientists say their results, published in The Journal of Clinical Investigation, reinforced common dietary recommendations to limit saturated fat intake as 'it causes you to eat more,'" quoting Reuters.

3. "GIANT STONE-AGE AXES FOUND IN AFRICAN LAKE BASIN" "A giant African lake basin is providing information about possible migration routes and hunting practices of early humans in the Middle and Late Stone Age periods, between 150,000 and 10,000 years ago...
Researchers from the School of Geography and the Environment at the University of Oxford are surveying the now-dry basin of Lake Makgadikgadi in the Kalahari Desert, which at 66,000 square kilometres is about the same size of present day Lake Victoria," quoting ScienceDaily.

4. "DISCOVERY OF LIFE ON MARS... CHOSEN NO. 1 UFO STORY OF 2008" "The discovery of life on Mars by Andrew D. Basiago [
link here ] has been chosen as the #1 UFO story of 2008. EXOPOLITICSRADIO.ORG was notified of the award by veteran broadcaster Jerry Pippin in a May 10, 2009 email statement, 'We made your [EXOPOLITICSRADIO.ORG with Alfred Lambremont Webre] broadcast story on the discovery of life on Mars the top UFO event of 2008.' In a 41-page paper dated Dec. 12, 2008, Washington State trial lawyer and environmental scholar Andrew D. Basiago sets out analysis and photographs identifying 3 species of humanoid beings, numerous species of animals, structures and statues on the surface of Mars. These photographs are images isolated by Andrew D. Basiago from within NASA rover Spirit photograph PIA 10214 , a composite photograph taken in November 2007 in the Columbia basin on Mars, and released public by NASA on its website in January 2008.

5. NEWS FROM SPACE A. "FOUND: FIRM PLACE TO STAND OUTSIDE SOLAR SYSTEM" "As scientists search the skies for life elsewhere, they have found more than 300 planets outside our solar system. But they all have been gas balls or can't be proven to be solid. Now a team of European astronomers has confirmed the first rocky extrasolar planet.
Scientists have long figured that if life begins on a planet, it needs a solid surface to rest on, so finding one elsewhere is a big deal.
'We basically live on a rock ourselves,' said co-discoverer Artie Hatzes, director of the Thuringer observatory in Germany. 'It's as close to something like the Earth that we've found so far. It's just a little too close to its sun.'
So close that its surface temperature is more than 3,600 degrees Fahrenheit, too toasty to sustain life. It circles its star in just 20 hours, zipping around at 466,000 mph. By comparison, Mercury, the planet nearest our sun, completes its solar orbit in 88 days...
This is a major discovery in the field of trying to find life elsewhere in the universe, said outside expert Alan Boss of the Carnegie Institution. It was the buzz of a conference on finding an Earth-like planet outside our solar system, held in Barcelona, Spain, where the discovery was presented Wednesday morning [Sept. 16]. The find is also being published in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics," quoting U.S. News & World Report.

1."CAN PRAYER HEAL THE SICK" "Praying on another person's behalf to improve their health is called "intercessory prayer." And, believe it or not, researchers have attempted to scientifically study its effects on health and recovery from disease. The results are intriguing:
* A 1988 study found that when patients in the hospital with heart disease had prayers said for them, they had less breathing trouble and required less antibiotic therapy than otherwise similar patients for whom prayers were not said. * A study published in 1998 suggested that prayer improved the health of AIDS patients. Although those receiving prayers had no change in an important measure of immune function over the six months of the study, they did have fewer serious illnesses, fewer doctor visits and better mood than those who were not prayed for. * In 1999, patients in a Missouri intensive care unit recovered faster after prayers were said for them compared with those who did not have prayers said. This study was unique due to its size—nearly 1,000 patients—and neither the patients nor their doctors knew which patients had prayers said for them. * A 2001 study published in the Journal of Reproductive Medicine supported intercessory prayer for women who were infertile. In that study, women for whom others prayed became pregnant twice as often as those who were not the recipients of prayer," from MSN Health & Fitness.

2. "STUDY: HUMAN FAT YIELDS MULTIPURPOSE STEM CELLS" " You know that fat in your body you wish you didn't have? It turns out those cells could be used to create stem cells that one day may be able to cure disease.
Scientists at Stanford University School of Medicine have discovered that the millions of fat cells removed during liposuction can be easily and quickly turned into induced pluripotent stem cells, or iPS cells, more easily than the skin cells that researchers used when the first iPS cells were created in 2007," quoting CNN.

"STUDY FINDS MORE EVIDENCE RAPID ARCTIC WARMING WASN'T NATURAL" "The Arctic was cooling for 1,900 years because of a natural change in Earth's orbit until greenhouse gas accumulation from the use of fossil fuels reversed the trend in recent decades, according to a study published Friday [Sept. 11] in Science magazine," from McClatchy newspapers:

B. "STUDY: WARMING HAS 'SEVERELY PERTURBED' ARCTIC" "Arctic warming is affecting plants, birds, animals and insects as ice melts and the growing season changes, scientists report in a new review of the many impacts climate change is having on the far north.
'Arctic ecosystems ... have been severely perturbed,' the experts wrote in Friday's [Sept. 11] edition of the journal Science.
As the global climate changes, the Arctic Circle has been warming faster than other regions and scientists have documented a series of affects on wildlife in the region," quoting MSNBC.

C. "SHIPS CROSS ARCTIC PASSAGE IN MILESTONE" "Two German ships became the first commercial vessels to traverse the Arctic's Northeast Passage, their owner reported Friday, having arrived in Siberia from South Korea by traveling around Russia's northern coast line.
The merchant ships MV Beluga Fraternity and MV Beluga Foresight made it "through the formerly impenetrable Northeast Passage from Asia to Europe for the first time," Beluga Shipping GmbH said in a statement," quoting the AP:

5. "TEENAGER INVENTS...SOLAR PANEL...FROM HUMAN HAIR" "A new type of solar panel using human hair could provide the world with cheap, green electricity, believes its teenage inventor.
Milan Karki, 18, who comes from a village in rural Nepal, believes he has found the solution to the developing world's energy needs.
The young inventor says hair is easy to use as a conductor in solar panels and could revolutionise renewable energy...
The hair replaces silicon, a pricey component typically used in solar panels, and means the panels can be produced at a low cost for those with no access to power, he explained.
In Nepal, one of the poorest countries in the world, many rural areas lack access to electricity and even in areas connected to power lines, users face shortages of up to 16 hours a day.
Milan and four classmates initially made the solar panel as an experiment but the teens are convinced it has wide applicability and commercial viability, "quoting UK's Daily Mail.

7. "CUTTING BACK ON SALT COULD SAVE US BILLIONS" "If Americans were to cut their salt intake to recommended levels, they'd have far fewer cases of high blood pressure, and save billions of dollars in health care costs, a new study estimates.
Because high sodium intake can contribute to high blood pressure — and its complications, including heart and kidney disease — the Institute of Medicine recommends that adults consume no more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day. The average American, however, gets about 1,000 mg more than that, according to the authors of the study in the American Journal of Health Promotion.

| KLEINER'S KORNER FOR WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 7, 2009
|
LABOR DAY, 2009 IN THE USA September 7, 2009 “Labor Day is a United States federal holiday that takes place on the first Monday in September. The holiday began in 1882, originating from a desire by the Central Labor Union to create a day off for the "working man". It is still celebrated mainly as a day of rest and marks the symbolic end of summer for many. Labor Day became a national holiday by Act of Congress in 1894,” quoting Wikipedia.
link here
’Labor Day differs in every essential way from the other holidays of the year in any country,’ said Samuel Gompers, founder and longtime president of the American Federation of Labor. ‘All other holidays are in a more or less degree connected with conflicts and battles of man's prowess over man, of strife and discord for greed and power, of glories achieved by one nation over another. Labor Day...is devoted to no man, living or dead, to no sect, race, or nation,” quoting the US Dept. of Labor website.

2. "BEST-SELLING BIBLE TO UNDERGO REVISION" "The top-selling Bible in North America will undergo its first revision in 25 years, modernizing the language in some sections and promising to reopen a contentious debate about changing gender terms in the sacred text. The New International Version, the Bible of choice for conservative evangelicals, will be revised to reflect changes in English usage and advances in Biblical scholarship, it was announced Tuesday [Sept. 1]. The revision is scheduled to be completed late next year and published in 2011...
The changes did not make all men "people" or remove male references to God, but instead involved dropping gender-specific terms when translators judged that the original text didn't intend it. So in some verses, references to "sons of God" became "children of God," for example.
Supporters say gender-inclusive changes are more accurate and make the Bible more accessible, but critics contend they twist meaning or smack of political correctness," quoting the AP. HMMM!

3. FILM "VANISHING OF THE BEES" TO BE RELEASED NEXT MONTH "The honeybee is responsible for pollinating one third of our food. This contributes approximately £200 million per year to the UK economy. Honeybees are dying in their millions and no-one knows why...
Vanishing of the Bees explores the mysterious collapse of the bee population across the planet and its greater meaning about mankind’s relationship with the natural world.
The film journeys through the US, Europe and Australia over a period of more than two years, providing a fascinating insight into the tragedy mounting as these crucial pollinators continue to disappear mysteriously and en masse," from Female First of the UK.

4. LEARN ABOUT INSPIRATIONAL JESSICA COX "Jessica is recognized internationally as an inspirational keynote speaker. Born without arms, Jessica now flies airplanes, drives cars, and otherwise lives a normal life using her feet as others use their hands. She holds the title of the first person without arms in the American Tae Kwon-Do Association to get a black belt and the first woman pilot in aviation history to fly with her feet. Convinced that the way we think has a greater impact on our lives than our physical constraints, she chose to pursue a degree in psychology while in college at the University of Arizona," quoting rightfooted.com.

Scientists have been trying to get an accurate estimate of the mutation rate for over 70 years.
However, only now has it been possible to get a reliable estimate, thanks to "next generation" technology for genetic sequencing.
The findings may lead to new treatments and insights into our evolution...
One of the scientists, Dr Yali Xue from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in Cambridgeshire, said: 'The amount of data we generated would have been unimaginable just a few years ago,'" quoting the BBC.

8. "'MASSIVE' ANCIENT WALL UNCOVERED IN JERUSALEM" "An archaeological dig in Jerusalem has turned up a 3,700-year-old wall that is the largest and oldest of its kind found in the region, experts say.
Standing 8 meters (26 feet) high, the wall of huge cut stones is a marvel to archaeologists...
It was found inside the City of David, an archaeological excavation site outside the Old City of East Jerusalem on a slope of the Silwan Valley.
The wall is believed to have been built by the Canaanites, an ancient pagan people who the Bible says inhabited Jerusalem and other parts of the Middle East before the advent of monotheism," quoting CNN.

9. CORDLESS ELECTRICITY! HAS ANYONE THOUGHT OF THE EFFECTS ON THE HUMAN BODY? A. "A CORDLESS FUTURE FOR ELECTRICITY?" "Electronics such as phones and laptops may start shedding their power cords within a year.
That's the prediction of Eric Giler, CEO of WiTricity, a company that's able to power light bulbs using wireless electricity that travels several feet from a power socket.
WiTricity's version of wireless electricity -- which converts power into a magnetic field and sends it sailing through the air at a particular frequency -- still needs to be refined a bit, he said, but should be commercially available soon.
Giler, whose company is a spinoff of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology research group, says wireless electricity has the potential to cut the need for power cords and throw-away batteries," quoting CNN.

B. CORDLESS ELECTRICITY SENDS MAGNETIC FIELD THROUGH AIR "Based on superficial media reports a few years back, many people think that the issue of safety regarding exposures to electromagnetic fields has been settled in favor of EMFs and that we have nothing to worry about. But nothing could be farther from the truth. Researchers in bioelectromagnetics and biophysics have continued to observe alarming studies across a range of frequency exposures that are common in our everyday lives, especially with wireless products such as cell phones, cell towers and wireless laptop computers. The American press is largely unaware of this new body of research, coming primarily from European countries," quoting B. Despite all the bleating by the mainstream media and Washington right now, the economy is NOT in good shape.
And here are a few facts:
* There are more than 30 million Americans on food stamps * A full 18% of incomes are coming from an already broke government * No less than 7 million people will run out of unemployment insurance by Christmas (their families will make it 13 million destitute folks)
Does this sound like a firm foundation for a recovering economy??
Here are the eerie similarities between financial market behavior in 2008 and 2009!
In both years:
* Commodities bottomed first (Jan 23, 2008 vs. Feb 23 2009) * A major Fed intervention occurred in Feb/March (Bear Stearns ’08 vs. the Obama Stimulus ’09) * Stocks and commodities rallied higher until early summer * The Baltic Dry Index (a key shipping index) collapsed from June - August * Stocks bottomed in mid-July (the 15th in 2008, and the 10th in 2009)
Then stocks crashed spectacularly in autumn 2008 after a choppy August.
If 2009 continues to follow the 2008 pattern, we're in for a nasty autumn with a collapse every bit as bad as last September and October."
