KLEINER'S KORNER FOR WEEK OF AUGUST 31, 2009
While the death of Sen. Ed Kennedy overshadowed the news last week, the passing of another Washington, D. C. giant unfortunately received little coverage, Robert Novak. This NBC Meet the Press piece described the illustrious career of this fabulous reporter: link here

And, mentioned last week was the passing of CBS 60 Minutes producer Don Hewitt. This 60 Minutes special on Hewitt’s life and career are well worth the ¾ of an hour to understand this man’s central roll in American television news for the last 1/2 century: link here

1. “BUILDING BLOCK OF LIFE FOUND ON COMET”
“The amino acid glycine, a fundamental building block of proteins, has been found in a comet for the first time, bolstering the theory that raw ingredients of life arrived on Earth from outer space, scientists said on Monday [Aug. 17].

Microscopic traces of glycine were discovered in a sample of particles retrieved from the tail of comet Wild 2 by the NASA spacecraft Stardust deep in the solar system some 242 million miles (390 million km) from Earth, in January 2004,” quoting Reuters.

2. “HUMANS WALK IN CIRCLES – BUT WE THINK WE’RE GOING STRAIGHT”
“It’s true, people who are lost really do walk in circles -- very wobbly circles. That’s from a study in today’s issue of the journal Current Biology.
Researches at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in Germany attached GPS locators to people and then set them to walking for several hours in the Sahara desert in Tunisia and the Bienwald forest in Germany.
Walkers were only able to continue in a straight line when they could see either the sun or the moon,” quoting USA Today.

3. “THE BRAIN: THE DARK MATTER OF THE HUMAN BRAIN”
“Meet the forgotten 90 percent of your brain: glial cells, which outnumber your neurons ten to one. And no one really knows what they do…
Glia, in fact, are busy multitaskers, guiding the brain’s development and sustaining it throughout our lives. Glia also listen carefully to their neighbors, and they speak in a chemical language of their own. Scientists do not yet understand that language, but experiments suggest that it is part of the neurological conversation that takes place as we learn and form new memories,” from Discover Magazine. link here
.

4. “IS QUANTUM MECHANICS SELECTIVELY ERASING OUR MEMORIES?”
“In a paper published last week, MIT physicist Lorenzo Maccone hypothesizes that, yes, quantum physics is messing with our minds. The laws of physics work just as well if time is running forwards or backwards. But we all seem to experience time running in only one direction, and in the same direction as everyone else -- a mystery of physics that's yet to be solved.
So life as we observe it presents a quandary. Randomness -- or entropy -- naturally increases. A drop of food coloring in water will spread out. Heat from a pizza dissipates. But the laws of physics that govern the tiny particles that make up everything could just as well run backwards, so something doesn't jibe. Why don't we see more instances of molecules ordering themselves (sugar un-dissolving itself from my coffee, ice cubes spontaneously forming in my water) if it's just as likely according to the laws of physics?
Maccone says that we do see these events. We just don't remember them, because some quantum weirdness erases the memories,” quoting Popular Science.

5. “12 SURPRISING SIGNS YOU’LL LIVE TO 100”
“You're the life of the party
You run for 40 minutes a day
You like raspberries in your oatmeal
You feel 13 years younger than you are
You embrace techie trends
You started menopause after age 52
You make every calorie count
You had a baby later in life
Your pulse beats 15 times in 15 seconds
You don't snore
You have a (relatively) flat belly after menopause
You get your blood tested for vitamin D levels,”

6. “15 BEAUTIFUL MICROSCOPIC IMAGES FORM INSIDE THE HUMAN BODY”
These are a must-see.

.

7. “TICK SALIVA COULD HOLD CANCER CURE”
“It may be one of nature's repulsive little blood-sucking parasites, but the humble tick could yield a future cure for cancers of the skin, liver and pancreas, Brazilian researchers have discovered.
They have identified a protein in the saliva of a common South American tick, Amblyomma cajennense, that apparently reduces and can even eradicate cancerous cells while leaving healthy cells alone.
"This is a radical innovation," said Ana Marisa Chudzinski-Tavassi, the molecular biologist at the Instituto Butantan in Sao Paulo who is leading the research.
"The component of the saliva of this tick... could be the cure for cancer," she told AFP,” quoting France’s AFP. link here
.

8. “INSTINCT BASED MEDICINE”
Dr. Leonard Coldwell, author of "Instinct Based Medicine: How to Survive Your
Illness ...and Your Doctor" was interviewed on Beyond the Ordinary saying.
“There is no healing force outside the human body, therefore the only person that can cure you is YOU!
And that is the only truth in regards of permanent optimum health.”

.

9. “SINGLE MOLECULE, ONE MILLION TIMES SMALLER THAN A GRAIN OF SAND PICTURED FOR FIRST TIME”
“It may look like a piece of honeycomb, but this lattice-shaped image is the first ever close-up view of a single molecule.
Scientists from IBM used an atomic force microscope (AFM) to reveal the chemical bonds within a molecule.
'This is the first time that all the atoms in a molecule have been imaged,' lead researcher Leo Gross said," from UK’s Daily Mail: link here
.

10. “SCIENTISTS FIND ‘GREAT PACIFIC OCEAN GARBAGE PATCH’”
“Scientists have just completed an unprecedented journey into the vast and little-explored "Great Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch."

On the Scripps Environmental Accumulation of Plastic Expedition (SEAPLEX), researchers got the first detailed view of plastic debris floating in a remote ocean region.
It wasn't a pretty sight.

The Scripps research vessel (R/V) New Horizon left its San Diego homeport on August 2, 2009, for the North Pacific Ocean Gyre, located some 1,000 miles off California's coast, and returned on August 21, 2009,” quoting Science Daily. link here

KLEINER'S KORNER DOUBLE-EDITION FOR WEEKS OF AUGUST 17/24 , 2009
Dear Readers;

Yael & I just returned home from a 2 week trip to Israel visiting our families after the first Ramtha School of Enlightenment (RSE) Workshop ever held in the Middle East in Tel Aviv. link here
RSE Israel is now on the map with this fabulous website for locals: link here
THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO MADE THIS SUCH A MEMORABLE VISIT!

We returned home to note the passing of Don Hewitt at age 86, “recognized as a father of modern television news and the creator of the medium's most successful broadcast, 60 Minutes CBS News 60 minutes.” [Ed. Note: This man was a titan and in addition to Edward R. Murrow & Walter Cronkhite, one of my favorite 20th century icons!] link here

1. “WHY BLUE M & M’S MAY HELP TO RELIEVE YOUR MIGRAINE”
“According to neuroscientist and headache specialist Holger Kaube at the University of Freiburg, the migraine is the brain's way of "evoking a state of disease and forcing a day or two of rest" by creating the need to lie down and stay away from light and noise.
The hypothalamus sets off a train of reactions which result in the dilation of the blood vessels in the meninges, the skin membrane surrounding brain. The dilation is accompanied by the inflammation of cells surrounding the vessels, which are intertwined with pain fibres, leading to a throbbing headache sensation.
Blue dye could either act on the root cause of the migraine by targeting and suppressing signals in the hypothalamus. Or it could act on the symptoms of the migraine by reducing inflammation in the membrane. Either one would potentially offer relief.
If this proves to be the case, the blue dye found in sweets such as M&M's and blue Liquorice All Sorts could well prove an safe, effective and cheap way of treating migraine. However, as evidenced by the wonderful pictures of the blue rats, there is one small drawback. It could leave you looking a little blue in the face,” quoting UK’s Times.

2. “’HIDDEN PORTAL’ CONCEPT DESCRIBED...”
“While the researchers can't promise delivery to a parallel universe or a school for wizards, books like Pullman's Dark Materials and JK Rowling's Harry Potter are steps closer to reality now that researchers in China have created the first tunable electromagnetic gateway.
The work is a further advance in the study of metamaterials, published in New Journal of Physics (co-owned by the Institute of Physics and German Physical Society).
In the research paper, the researchers from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Fudan University in Shanghai describe the concept of a ‘a gateway that can block electromagnetic waves but that allows the passage of other entities’ like a “'hidden portal' as mentioned in fictions’”," quoting ScienceDaily. link here
.

3. NEWS OF UNDERSTANDING THE HUMAN BRAIN
A. “BRAIN SCANS OF THE FUTURE”
“Psychologists have found that thought patterns used to recall the past and imagine the future are strikingly similar. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging to show the brain at work, they have observed the same regions activated in a similar pattern whenever a person remembers an event from the past or imagines himself in a future situation. This challenges long-standing beliefs that thoughts about the future develop exclusively in the frontal lobe…
‘You might look at it as mental time travel--the ability to take thoughts about ourselves and project them either into the past or into the future,’ says Kathleen McDermott, Ph.D. and Washington University psychology professor,” from ScienceDaily.
link here

B. “HARNESSING THE POWER OF THE BRAIN”
“This story was first published on Nov. 2, 2008. It was updated on Aug. 6, 2009.
Once in a while, we run across a science story that is hard to believe until you see it. That's how we felt about this story when we first saw human beings operating computers, writing e-mails, and driving wheelchairs with nothing but their thoughts.

Quietly in a number of laboratories, an astounding technology is developing that directly connects the human brain to a computer. It's like a sudden leap in human evolution - a leap that could one day help paralyzed people to walk again and amputees to move bionic limbs. As correspondent Scott Pelley first reported last November, the connection has already been made for a few people, and for them it has been life changing,” quoting CBS News. link here
.

4. SCIENCE UNDERSTANDINGS TURNED ON THEIR HEELS
A. “CENTURY-OLD PHYSICS LAW VIOLATED”
“A study in the journal Nano Letters shows that the well-known rules of heat transfer from a nonreflective object, called Planck's blackbody radiation law, break down if the object can be brought close enough to another object while still not touching it. Steve Mirsky reports…

It’s good news because of potential applications. For example, computer data storage and solar energy devices are all less efficient because of heat buildup. If tinier distances can be achieved in these real-world devices, such waste could be made to walk the plank<’ quoting Scientific American. link here

B. “NEWFOUND PLANETS ORBITS BACKWARDS”
“Planets orbit stars in the same direction that the stars rotate. They all do. Except one.
A newfound planet orbits the wrong way, backward compared to the rotation of its host star. Its discoverers think a near-collision may have created the retrograde orbit, as it is called.
The star and its planet, WASP-17 , are about 1,000 light-years away. The setup was found by the UK's Wide Area Search for Planets (WASP) project in collaboration with Geneva Observatory. The discovery was announced today but has not yet been published in a journal,” quoting Space.com. link here
.

5. “MICHAEL MOORE’S CAPITALISM: A LOVE STORY MOVIE TRAILER”
“Since bursting onto the documentary scene 20 years ago with "Roger & Me," a blistering critique of General Motors, Michael Moore has directed the highest-grossing documentary of all time (2004's "Fahrenheit 9/11") and become a professional populist provocateur. The Flint, Mich., native is now busy finishing "Capitalism: A Love Story," his take on the U.S. financial crisis, which will premiere next month at the Venice and Toronto film festivals ahead of its wide release Oct. 2,” quoting The Hollywood Reporter in Truthout. [Ed. Note. I am REALLY looking forward to seeing this film!]

6. LONGEVITY CAPTIVATES IN THESE STORIES
A. “MORE GOOD YEARS”
“On Ikaria [Greece], a mountainous, 99-square-mile island, residents tell this story to illustrate something they've known all their lives: on average, Ikarians outlive just about everyone else in the world.
For three weeks in April, I [Dan Buettner is the author of The Blue Zones: Lessons for Living Longer From the People Who've Lived the Longest (National Geographic, 2008)] led a scientific expedition to Ikaria to investigate the reasons for the islanders' remarkable longevity. It was part of my research into the earth's few Blue Zones: places where an extraordinarily high proportion of natives live past 90. Our team of demographic and medical researchers—funded by AARP and National Geographic—found that an amazing one in three Ikarians reaches 90,” quoting AARP Magazine. Read the 13 likely contributors to Ikarian longevity. link here

B. “LIFE EXPECTANCY REACHES ALL-TIME HIGH IN U. S."
“U.S. life expectancy has risen to a new high, now standing at nearly 78 years, the government reported Wednesday [Aug. 19]…
The new U.S. data is a preliminary report based on about 90 percent of the death certificates collected in 2007. It comes from the National Center for Health Statistics, part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,” quoting the AP.

KLEINER'S KORNER FOR WEEK OF AUGUST 17, 2009
There is no Kleiner's Korner this week.

KLEINER'S KORNER FOR WEEK OF AUGUST 10, 2009
The all-time-ever highest recorded temperature in Seattle and the tie for all-time-ever hottest temperature in Olympia plus the string of record 90-degree days certainly made big news out here in the Pacific Northwest last week: link here And: link here

1. “SCIENTISTS UNCORK POTENTIAL SECRET OF RED WINE’S HEALTH BENEFITS”
“Scientists from Scotland and Singapore have unraveled a mystery that has perplexed scientists since red wine was first discovered to have health benefits: how does resveratrol control inflammation? New research published in the August 2009 print issue of The FASEB Journal, not only explains resveratrol's one-two punch on inflammation, but also show how it—or a derivative—can be used to treat potentially deadly inflammatory disease, such as appendicitis, peritonitis, and systemic sepsis,” quoting SceinceDaily. link here
.

2. “WATCHING TV: WORST FOR KIDS THAN YOU THINK”
“Researchers in the U.S. and Spain collaborated on the study of 111 children ages 3 to 8 and found that of all the forms of inactivity they examined, television-viewing was the worst. It was linked to significantly higher blood pressure in children - the more TV kids watched, the higher their blood pressure - and the effect held true regardless of whether a child was heavy or at a healthy weight. What's more, other sedentary behaviors, like using a computer, were not associated with similar blood-pressure hikes, according to the study, which was published in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicin,” quoting TIME Magazine.

3. NEWS OF FINDINGS ABOUT THE HUMAN BRAIN
A. “BRAIN POWER: IN BATTLE, HUNCHES PROVE TO BE VALUABLE”
“Still, high-tech gear, while helping to reduce casualties, remains a mere supplement to the most sensitive detection system of all — the human brain. Troops on the ground, using only their senses and experience, are responsible for foiling many I.E.D. attacks, and, like Sergeant Tierney, they often cite a gut feeling or a hunch as their first clue,” quoting the New York Times.
link here

B. “A PATCHWORK MIND: HOW YOUR PARENTS GENES SHAPE YOUR BRAIN”
“Through the study of imprinted genes, researchers are also uncovering clues about how our parents’ genes influence our brain—it seems that maternal genes play a more important role in the formation of some brain areas, such as those for language and complex thought, and paternal genes have more influence in regions involved in growing, eating and mating,” quoting Scientific American. link here

C. “GIRL SEES FINE WITH HALF A BRAIN”
“A 10-year-old girl from Germany has had quite a normal life despite the fact that she was born with only half her brain. Even more surprising, she has almost perfect vision in one of her eyes.

Now, scientists have figured out why. The girl's brain rewired itself - likely in the womb - so that it's able to process information from both the right and left fields of vision even though she is missing the right brain hemisphere, which failed to develop while she was in the womb.

The child's case is the only one of its kind known in the world, researchers said,” quoting LiveScience.

D. “A CROSSWORD PUZZLE A DAY MAY DELAY DEMENTIA”
“Doing crossword puzzles, reading, and playing cards daily may delay the rapid memory decline that occurs if people develop dementia , according to a U.S. study.
Researchers from New York's Albert Einstein College of Medicine spent five years following 488 people aged 75 to 85 who did not have dementia at the start of the study,” quoting Reuters. link here
.

4. “SCIENTISTS CLAIM NEW STATE OF MATTER CREATED”
“Scientists claim to have created a form of aluminum that's nearly transparent to extreme ultraviolet radiation and which is a new state of matter.
It's an idea straight out of science fiction, featured in the movie "Star Trek IV."
The work is detailed in the journal Nature Physics.
The normal states of matter are solid, liquid and gas, and a fourth state, called plasma, is a superheated gas considered more exotic. Other experiments have created strange states of matter for brief periods. This one, too, existed only briefly,” quoting LiveScience.

5. “SWISS WANT TO REVERSE PRAYERS, ASK GOD TO STOP GLACIER’S SHRINKING”
“Villagers from deeply Roman Catholic south Switzerland have for centuries offered a sacred vow to God to protect them from the advancing ice mass of the Great Aletsch glacier.
Global warming is making them want to reverse their prayers, and the Alpine faithful are seeking the permission of the pope.
Since the vow was established in 1678, the deal was simple: the citizens of the isolated mountain hamlets of Fiesch and Fieschertal would pledge to lead virtuous lives. In exchange, God would spare their homes and livelihoods from being swallowed by Europe's largest glacier as it expanded toward the valley with heavy winter snows.
Times have changed, and the once-fearsome Aletsch is melting amid temperatures that are 0.7 degrees Celsius (1.3 Fahrenheit) warmer than in the 19th century. The pastor at the Ernerwald Chapel has warned his flock that a new danger threatens,” quoting USA Today. link here

6. “CLEVER ROOKS REPEAT ANCIENT FABLE”
“One of Aesop's fables may have been based on fact, scientists report.
In the tale, written more than 2,000 years ago, a crow uses stones to raise the water level in a pitcher so it can reach the liquid to quench its thirst.
Now a study published in Current Biology reveals that rooks, a relative of crows, do just the same when presented with a similar situation…
Another paper, published in the journal Plos One, shows that New Caledonian crows - which like rooks, are a member of the corvid group, along with ravens, jackdaws, magpies and jays - can use three tools in succession to reach a treat,” quoting BBC.

8. INTRODUCING SEARASER
“SEARASER could be one of the most efficient sources of renewable energy…
“SEARASER uses wave displacement to lift a float attached to a piston and uses gravity in the wave’s following trough to push the piston back down. It is different from other wecs as it is tethered to a weight on the seabed by a single flexible tether, but utilises a double acting piston, thereby producing volumes of pressurised water in both directions of the piston,” quoting Searaser.

9. “THE FLOWER OF POSITIVE THINKING”
“Can lavender change your life?”
“Iris Lee Underwood had long heard that lavender was powerful balm for an aching heart. But when she caressed the velvety lavender flower she was harvesting outside her home one sunny afternoon six years ago, she felt its legendary mood-boosting powers in a way she didn't expect,” quoting AARP Magazine. link here

10. “SELECTING THE SAME SEX”
“There is one place where the definition of gender remains binary – in the womb. When it comes to sonograms, amniocentesis and standard pre-natal testing, there are no nuances. Here, the pronouncement, “It’s a girl,” can translate into fierce and instant parental rejection. The fact is that when the issue is “sex selection abortion,” the same sex is always being selected – female,” quoting On The Issues Magazine. link here
