| KLEINER'S KORNER FOR WEEK OF FEBRUARY 16, 2009
|
Kleiner’s Korner will not have an edition for the week of February 23, 2009. Look for more news of-interest the week of March 2nd.
1. “ICE SHELF COLLAPSE COULD SHIFT AXIS OF EARTH, STUDY SAYS” “A new study from Toronto researchers suggests that the collapse of a large portion of the Antarctic ice sheet would shift the very axis of the Earth. Geophysicists at the University of Toronto explored the effects on North America and the globe, if sea levels were to rise due to the collapse of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. One of the most jarring predictions contained in the report, to be published in the Feb. 6 issue of the journal Science, is that the sea-change could shift the Earth's rotation,” quoting Canada’s CTV.

2. “HOW YOU LIVE MAY CHANGE HOW YOU LOOK” “The fountain of youth might be as simple as maintaining a healthy lifestyle. That's the result of a new study involving identical twins... Researchers from Cleveland's Case Western Reserve studied photos of twins who attended the annual twins days festival,” quoting Seattle’s NBC affiliate KING-5 TV.

3. ‘BRAINS ‘ARE HARDWIRED TO BELIEVE IN GOD AND IMAGINARY FRIENDS’” “Religion is part of human nature and our brains are hard wired to believe in God, scientists believe.
The evidence includes studies of babies and children which have shown the brain is programmed to think of the mind as being separate from the body.
This distinction allows us to believe in the supernatural, to conjure up imaginary friends - and to conceive of gods, this week's New Scientist reports,” quoting UK’s Daily Mail.

4. “M-S STEM CELL TREATMENT ‘SUCCESS’” “Stem-cell transplants may control and even reverse multiple sclerosis symptoms if done early enough, a small study has suggested. Not one of 21 adults with relapsing-remitting MS who had stem cells transplanted from their own bone marrow deteriorated over three years. And 81% improved by at least one point on a scale of neurological disability, The Lancet Neurology reported,” quoting the BBC.

5. “HUMAN CLONES: ONE STEP CLOSER” “...scientists have transferred DNA from an adult human cell into a human egg, and made the egg to “reprogram” the donor DNA back to its embryonic state, producing a pattern of gene activation like that in normal IVF embryos--and therefore, it seems, the pattern necessary to create an embryo. What this means, in a nutshell, is that if the study holds up, it will look increasingly likely that there are no known technical obstacles to reproductive cloning, the creation of human clones not for stem cells (in which case the clone never gets further than a days-old ball of cells) but for babies,” quoting Newsweek.

6. “56-YEAR-OLD WOMAN FIRST TO SWIM ATLANTIC” “Jennifer Figge pressed her toes into the Caribbean sand, exhilarated and exhausted as she touched land this week for the first time in almost a month. Reaching a beach in Trinidad, she became the first woman on record to swim across the Atlantic Ocean — a dream she’d had since the early 1960s, when a stormy trans-Atlantic flight got her thinking she could don a life vest and swim the rest of the way if needed. The 56-year-old left the Cape Verde Islands off Africa’s western coast on Jan. 12, battling waves of up to 30 feet and strong winds,” quoting the AP.

7. “PLANCK SATELLITE SET TO MAP THE UNIVERSE’S COSMIC MICROWAVE BACKGROUND” “The Planck satellite is set to eavesdrop with hitherto unsurpassed precision on the echo of the Big Bang, thereby providing a sharp image of the infancy of the Universe. The satellite is due to be launched on board an Ariane 5 rocket on April 16th. The aim of this international mission, managed by the European Space Agency (ESA), is to map the cosmic microwave background,” quoting the Max Planck Society.

9. DAVID WILCOCK ON COAST TO COAST ABOUT THE FUTURE “In the first half of the program, researcher and lecturer David Wilcock spoke about the year 2012, and presented scientific data which shows big changes are in store for humanity in the near future. According to Wilcock, crop circles have been pointing toward a profound event centered around 2012. A recent crop circle formation accurately displayed the planetary alignment for the exact day when the Mayan Calendar will end, he further noted,” quoting Coast to Coast.

10. INTRODUCING THE INTERSTATE TRAVELER HYDROGEN SUPER HIGHWAY “What is the Interstate Traveler Hydrogen Super Highway? It is a collection of vital municipal utilities bundled into what we call the Conduit Cluster providing a first of its kind full integration of solar powered hydrogen production and distribution system supporting a high speed magnetic levitation ( MagLev ) on-demand public transit network built along the right of way of the US Interstate Highway Systems, and any other permissible right of way where such a machine would be of benefit. The Hydrogen Super Highway, also known as the HyRail, is accessed by Traveler Stations that are built within the right of way of the Interstate Highway within the land locked real-estate of the clover leaf interchanges providing maximum ease of access for people who live anywhere near the Interstate Highway,” quoting Interstate Traveler.

Last October, I read a Newsweek review about a new book giving new insight into the Titanic sinking in 1912. I thought I had seen and read just about every scenario possible. However the reviews intrigued me.
I placed the book on-hold at the library for when a copy became available. I received the book and could not put it down last week. So many things now make sense. Read the Newsweek review:

1. “BLUE LIGHT DESTROYS ANTIBIOTIC-RESISTANT STAPH INFECTION” “Two common strains of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, commonly known as MRSA, were virtually eradicated in the laboratory by exposing them to a wavelength of blue light, in a process called photo-irradiation... Chukuka S. Enwemeka, Deborah Williams, Sombiri K. Enwemeka, Steve Hollosi, and David Yens from the New York Institute of Technology (Old Westbury, NY) had previously demonstrated that photo-irradiation using 405-nm light destroys MRSA strains grown in culture. In the current study, "Blue 470-nm Light Kills Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in Vitro," the authors exposed bacterial colonies of MRSA to various doses of 470-nm light, which emits no UV radiation,” quoting Science Daily.

2. “IS TECHNOLOGY PRODDING A DECLINE IN CRITICAL THINKING AND DEVELOPMENT?” “As technology has played a bigger role in our lives, our skills in critical thinking and analysis have declined, while our visual skills have improved, according to research by Patricia Greenfield, UCLA distinguished professor of psychology and director of the Children's Digital Media Center, Los Angeles...
Her research was published this month in the journal Science. Reading for pleasure, which has declined among young people in recent decades, enhances thinking and engages the imagination in a way that visual media such as video games and television do not, Greenfield said,” quoting Science Daily.

3. “WRECK OF HMS VICTORY FOUND IN ENGLISH CHANNEL” “American salvagers say they have discovered the long-sought wreck of HMS Victory, the mightiest and most technologically advanced warship of its time, which sank during a violent storm in the English Channel in 1744.
Armed with as many as 110 massive bronze cannons and carrying a crew of 900 men and 100 supernumeraries, the Victory was lost with all hands and reportedly with a treasure of gold bullion whose value is estimated at $1 billion…
‘This is the naval equivalent of the Titanic, perhaps even more important than the Titanic,’ said marine archaeologist Sean Kingsley, director of Wreck Watch International, who consulted with Odyssey on the find. ‘It's the only intact collection of bronze guns from a Royal Navy warship in the world,’" quoting the LA Times.

4. “SONY DEVELOPS COMPACT SIZED FINGER VEIN AUTHENTICATION TECHNOLOGY” “Sony today announced the development of a finger vein authentication technology called "mofiria" that can be used in future PCs or mobile devices.
The technology offers quick response and high accuracy and comes in a compact size for mounting on mobile devices such as a personal computer or mobile phone, Sony claims.
Compared to other biometric authentication techniques, vein authentication technology achieves higher accuracy on personal identification and forgery resistance because it uses the veins inside the human body. Finger vein patterns differ from person to person, each finger to finger, and it is said that they do not change over the years.
"mofiria" uses a method where a CMOS sensor diagonally captures scattered light inside the finger veins, making a plane layout possible. As a result, a small and more flexible design can be realized in building this technology into mobile devices,” quoting CDR Info.

5. “CONTROVERSIAL MEASURE WOULD REQUIRE DNA SAMPLING AT ARREST” “Suspects arrested in cases as minor as shoplifting would have to give a DNA sample before they are even charged with a crime if a controversial proposal is approved by the Legislature. State criminal defense groups and the American Civil Liberties Union say the House bill is unconstitutional. It would mandate that police or jail staff collect DNA from all adults and juveniles arrested on suspicion of a felony or gross misdemeanor. More than a dozen states already allow law enforcement to collect DNA from suspects before they are convicted. Three more states, including Washington, are considering such proposals this year... Jack King, staff attorney for the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers in Washington, D.C., said his organization has been fighting similar DNA-collection proposals since 2004. "DNA samples reveal the most personal, private information about a person's physical and mental makeup," King said. "It is terribly unfair to an arrestee." King said he believes that seizing biological evidence before conviction violates constitutional protections against unreasonable search and seizure,” quoting the Seattle Times.

6. “COUPLE DIE TOGETHER AFTER 62 YEARS OF MARRIAGE” “Death, like everything in their 62-year marriage, was something the Mosers faced together. Eighty-four-year-old Robert, whose health had declined steadily in recent years, always expected to go first. His 80-year-old wife, Darlene, had been his steady caretaker at the Seatter Road home they built with their own hands. That is, until December, when a cancer gave her precious few weeks of life to live. When Robert learned Darlene was terminally ill, he quickly grumbled: "I'm terminal, too." The claim drew scoffs from his family. But he was serious. And as his wife lay beside him in her last moments on Jan. 23, Robert, too, began to die, to the amazement of his family and hospice caretakers. Only six hours separated their deaths,” quoting The Kitsap Sun.

7. UNIQUE KIDNEY TRANSPLANT – THROUGH WOMAN’S VAGINA “Surgeons removed a woman’s kidney through her vagina so she could give it to her ailing niece, an unusual operation they hope will encourage others to donate because it reduces pain, scarring and recovery time. Doctors at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine said donor Kimberly Johnson, 48, and her niece, Jennifer Gilbert, 23, were both doing well following operations Thursday [Jan. 29]. ‘It was easier than childbirth,’ said Johnson, who has three children,” quoting the AP.

8. “STUDY SHOWS WHAT MAKES LOCUSTS SWARM” “A brain chemical that lifts people out of depression can transform solitary grasshoppers into swarming desert locusts, a finding that could one day help prevent the devastating plagues, researchers said on Thursday [Jan. 29]. Increases of serotonin, the nerve-signaling chemical targeted by many antidepressants, appears to spark the behavior changes needed to turn the normally harmless insects into bugs that gang up to munch crops, they said,” quoting Reuters.

9. “PARCHED: AUSTRALIA FACES COLLAPSE AS CLIMATE CHANGE KICKS IN” “Leaves are falling off trees in the height of summer, railway tracks are buckling, and people are retiring to their beds with deep-frozen hot-water bottles, as much of Australia swelters in its worst-ever heatwave… Experts worry that Australia, which emits more carbon dioxide per head than any nation on earth, may also be the first to implode under the impact of climate change… Australia, the driest inhabited continent on earth, is regarded as highly vulnerable. A study by the country's blue-chip Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation identified its ecosystems as "potentially the most fragile" on earth in the face of the threat,” quoting UK’s Independent.
link here .
10. “WATER – ANOTHER GLOBAL ‘CRISIS’” “Among people who study human development, it is a widely-held view that each person needs about 20 litres of water each day for the basics - to drink, cook and wash sufficiently to avoid disease transmission. Yet at the height of the East African drought, people were getting by on less than five litres a day - in some cases, less than one litre a day, enough for just three glasses of drinking water and nothing left over,” quoting the BBC.

LANDMARK ACHIEVEMENT IN SOUTH AMERICA!
“Bolivia Looking Forward: New Constitution Passed, Celebrations Hit the Streets”
“The constitution, which was written in a constituent assembly that first convened in August of 2006, grants unprecedented rights to Bolivia's indigenous majority, establishes broader access to basic services, education and health care, and expands the role of the state in the management of natural resources and the economy,” quoting Truthout.

1. “SUCCESS IS ALL IN THE MIND” “And almost anyone can do it... Deliberate practice, whether it's applied to sport or business or the arts, begins in the brain. This isn't a child doing an hour of piano scales every day while imagining the fun they will have afterwards. Instead, what makes someone spectacular in their field - and keeps them there - is training via a kind of focused, repetitive practice in which the subject is always monitoring his or her performance, correcting, experimenting, listening to immediate and constant feedback, and always pushing beyond what has already been achieved. Ericsson's theory has enormous ramifications for parents, students, teachers and managers. It also puts the kybosh on the idea that critical feedback is damaging,” quoting the Australian.

2. “WILL WRITING WITH YOUR OPPOSITE HAND STRENGTHEN YOUR BRAIN?” “Yes, it will indeed! This kind of activity is called Neurobics, which is essentially doing things you normally do but done differently. Like brushing your teeth with the other hand, taking a shower with your eyes closed, writing with the opposite hand, taking a different route to work, etc. What happens in your brain while you’re doing this becomes a brain exercise because different, underused nerve pathways and connections get activated. This stimulates the growth of new brain cells and brain connections. According to the neurobics.com website, to be a neurobic activity it must have one or more of the following: 1) Involve one or more of your senses in a novel context. 2) Engage your attention. 3) Break a routine activity in an unexpected, novel way,” quoting Online Brain Games.

3. “TELEPORTATION MILESTONE ACHIEVED” “We've still got a long way to go before human beings can be beamed from one place to another Star Trek-style, but on Friday a team of scientists at the University of Maryland achieved, nonetheless, a milestone in teleportation. According to LiveScience, the university's Joint Quantum Institute for the first time was able to teleport information between two separate atoms across a distance of a meter--about one step for an adult,” quoting LiveScience:

4. “AUSTRALIAN SCIENTISTS ON-BOARD TO CRACK SECRETS OF UNIVERSE” “Astronomy boffins from two Australian universities are part of a revolutionary global effort to unlock the secrets of gravitational waves, which could provide a glimpse into the origins of the universe. The University of Adelaide and the Australian National University (ANU) will take part in a $US200 million project to observe ripples in the curvature of space-time caused by gravity waves,” quoting Australia’s ABC News.

5. “FIRST VIEW OF THE DARK SIDE OF THE SUN” “Soon we may get the first ever glimpse of the dark side of the sun. Well, no, there's no actual dark side of a luminous ball of burning gas, but there is an effective dark side, as in, the side of the sun we can't see at any given time. Scientists aren't content to get just half of the picture, so they've launched the STEREO (Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatories) mission, a pair of NASA spacecraft that will orbit the sun simultaneously to provide a complete view of all sides of the star at once… The perfect spherical view will come on Feb. 6, 2011. Right now the satellites, which were launched in October 2006, are about 90 degrees apart, which allows a picture of about 270 degrees of the sun — the fullest view yet,” quoting Wired.

6. “SCIENTISTS FIND NEW CREATURES OF AUSTRALIAN DEEP” “A team of researchers from Australia and the United States have uncovered new marine life, including fiery red coral and purple-spotted sea anemones, in deep waters off the Australian state of Tasmania, according to findings released Sunday [Jan 18].
Scientists who took part in the US$2 million four-week expedition also found that most reef-forming coral deeper than 4,200 feet (1,300 meters) in the area were newly dead. Researchers will study samples of the coral to try and determine whether the creatures are dying because of ocean warming, disease, a rise in ocean acidity or some other reason. "Mathematical models predict that we could be seeing impacts of ocean acidification in this region," one of the expedition's chief scientists, Ron Thresher of Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, said in a statement,” quoting the AP.

7. “MEN ‘CAN FIGHT FOOD URGES BETTER’” “Men are more likely than women to be able to resist a plate full of tempting treats, American research suggests…
In the experiment, chronicled in the US journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the volunteers did not eat for a day and were then asked to suppress all thoughts of food,” quoting the BBC.

8. “OCTUPLETS BORN IN CALIFORNIA DOING ‘VERY WELL’” “A woman in Southern California gave birth Monday [Jan. 26] to the second set of octuplets ever delivered alive in the United States. Doctors described the six boys and two girls as a feisty bunch who made their entrance kicking and crying and seemed to be doing remarkably well, despite arriving nine weeks premature. They ranged in weight from 1 pound, 8 ounces, to 3 pounds, 4 ounces,” quoting MSNBC:

9. “1,800-YEAR-OLD MARBLE HEAD UNEARTHED IN ISRAEL” “Archaeologists in Israel have discovered what they believe is the bust of a Roman boxer from the second or third century. "It seems that what we have here is a unique find," the two directors of the excavation said in a statement released Monday [Jan. 26] by the Israel Antiquities Authority. The figurine, made of marble, comes from a time when "the art of Roman sculpture reached its zenith," Doron Ben-Ami and Yana Tchekhanovets said,” quoting CNN.

10. “DEATH RATE OF WESTS OLD FORESTS DOUBLED” “The mortality rate of old-growth forests across the West has more than doubled in recent decades, and those forests are now losing more trees than they gain, according to a new study that identified the most probable cause as warming temperatures. The trend is happening at every elevation, in trees of different sizes and of various species, researchers with the U.S. Geological Survey and universities reported in the peer-reviewed journal Science,” quoting MSNBC.
