KLEINER'S KORNER FOR WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 29, 2008
Dear Readers;

Certainly no week in the 7+ years I have been penning this tome have I received more letters than last week. I had several requests to write a mid-week special just dealing with the financial issues. I will address this on a limited basis [see #13 below], as I do not want Kleiner’s Korner to drift off the main mission to provide “Reports from the fields of science, quantum physics, medicine, history, the environment, Earth changes, and humanity.”

Thank you so much for your support, encouragement and interest...

Humanity lost one of its champions last week with the passing of actor Paul Newman. Much has been written about this man’s contributions to film, yet I will always remember Mr. Newman for his inspirational acts of generosity and kindness to fellow human beings in need.

Mr. Newman gave “back to charity all the money he earned from the sale of Newman's Own products.” link here And that totaled over $225,000 to charity: link here

Further, Mr. Newman’s achievement in founding The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp will be his lasting legacy in my mind. As a child who had the opportunity to attend summer camp, I will always cherish those days and am grateful for those that have the vision to offer this wonderful experience for all children.
“Hole in the Wall Gang Camp provides children with cancer and other serious illnesses and conditions a camping experience of the highest quality, while extending year-round support to their families and health care providers. Through our Camp programs, on-going outreach to hospitals and clinics, and other services for children, families and caregivers, the Camp serves more than 15,000 annually. All of our services are provided free of charge.” link here

2. ABC NEWS: “COULD SO MANY UFO WITNESSES BE RIGHT?”
“For decades, millions of people around the world have reported seeing UFOs hovering in their skies. It is a mystery that science has been unable to solve, and the phenomenon remains largely unexamined. Much of the reporting on this subject holds those who claim to have seen UFOs up to ridicule.
"UFOs: Seeing is Believing" takes a serious look at the phenomenon in today's world. The 90-minute special includes interviews with scientists searching for proof of life beyond earth and UFO witnesses who claim aliens are already here,” quoting ABC News.

3. “NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCES: WHAT REALLY HAPPENS?
“Many reports of near-death experiences sound the same: a welcoming white light and a replay of memories. But now scientists aim to study what really happens to the brain and consciousness when someone is on the verge of dying.
In a new study called AWARE (AWAreness during REsuscitation), doctors will examine patients in hospitals in Europe and North America who reach a state called cardiac arrest…
The AWARE researchers want to find out what happens to the brain when a person's body has started to shut down, whether it is possible for people to see and hear during cardiac arrest, and what's going on during out of body experiences.
The launch of the AWARE study was announced at an international symposium at the United Nations Sept. 11,” quoting LiveScience. link here

4. “MAN, 112, SAYS SECRET TO LONG LIFE IS BEING ACTIVE”
“Walter Breuning of Great Falls said the secret to living a long life is staying active. And he should know. The retired Great Northern Railway worker celebrated his 112th birthday on Sunday [Sept. 21]. Breuning said that if ‘you keep your mind busy and keep your body busy, you're going to be around a long time,’” quoting the AP.

5. “LONG-LOST EINSTEIN TELESCOPE FOUND: RESTORED”
“Albert Einstein's long-lost telescope, forgotten for decades in a Jerusalem storage shed, goes on display this week after three years and $10,000 spent restoring the relic.

The old reflecting telescope is cumbersome by modern standards, but a demonstration for The Associated Press showed it still works well enough to see five of Jupiter's moons and the cloud bands on the huge planet,” quoting the AP. link here

7. “DNA TEST CLEARS DALLAS MAN JAILED FOR 25 YEARS”
“A 56-year-old man who spent 25 years behind bars for a rape he says he didn't commit walked out of court a free man Friday after a judge recommended his aggravated rape conviction be overturned…
That day came Friday [Sept. 19], about a week after testing on DNA evidence from a rape kit taken after a 1981 sexual assault of a Dallas woman excluded Lindsey as the source.
He becomes the 20th man in Dallas County proven innocent by DNA testing since 2001, although one of those men will be retried by prosecutors. Those 20 cases are a national high for one county, according to the Innocence Project, a New York-based legal center specializing in wrongful conviction cases,” quoting the AP. [Ed. 8. “NEW AIRPORT SCREENING “COULD READ MINDS’”
“The Department of Homeland Security is testing a type of body scanner that seeks out invisible clues that a person might be harbouring criminal intent, such as raised body temperature, pulse and breathing rate.
The system, called MALINTENT, uses a raft of "non-invasive" sensors and imagers to detect such factors remotely - subjects are not hooked up to anything.
It also evaluates a person's facial expression to help to gauge whether they could be planning to commit an attack or crime,” quoting UK’s Telegraph.

9. “TONS OF DRUGS DUMPED INTO WASTEWATER”
“U.S. hospitals and long-term care facilities annually flush millions of pounds of unused pharmaceuticals down the drain, pumping contaminants into America's drinking water, according to an ongoing Associated Press investigation.
These discarded medications are expired, spoiled, over-prescribed or unneeded. Some are simply unused because patients refuse to take them, can't tolerate them or die with nearly full 90-day supplies of multiple prescriptions on their nightstands,” quoting the AP. link here

1. Store clean water from the ground
2. Buy and store long-term food for storage that you like
3. Buy a small plot of your own land in the country, away from the cities
4. Buys gold/silver coins and store them somewhere safe at home and not in a bank
5. Buy seeds and store them in a cool, dry, dark place
6. Buy non-electric tools
This writer advises one more thing.
Figure out your monthly budget and save and store at least 3 months cash in $20 bills or smaller at home. One thing seen in news reports is some customers not being able to get to their cash in a timely fashion from the FDIC deposited in failed banks.
It was this book 20 years ago that laid out all that is happening today: link here

KLEINER'S KORNER FOR WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 22, 2008
Happy Equinox wherever you are located [Autumn begins in Yelm 8:39am on Monday, Sept. 22nd]:
link here

After a 5-day pause from the internet, this writer has returned to many of your requests for a Kleiner's Korner (KK) view of the financial headlines coming at lightning speed. This writer will digest all of the information this week and report in the September 29th edition. However, the financial meltdown comes as no surprise to KK readers, for all has been expected and written here for nigh, many years...
Stay tuned, there is more to come, alot more!

2. “THE INTERNET – A PRIVATE EYE’S BEST FRIEND”
“For private investigator Steven Rambam, the Internet is his most valuable tool in helping to find missing persons, cheating husbands, and your competitor's dirty secrets.

But, while the intelligence business is booming, individuals are losing the battle to protect their privacy with every blog post, Google Web search, and online photo, Rambam, director of the Pallorium investigative agency, said in a keynote session at the Last HOPE (Hackers on Planet Earth) conference,” quoting MSN.

3. TEXAS MAN PATENTS A FLYING MOTORCYCLE
“Larry Neal had been selling kit gyroplanes through The Butterfly LLC company for several years - these small, light aircraft take off and land in a very small area, and the unpowered top rotor is even more effective than a parachute in power-loss situations, making them an extremely safe flying option,” quoting GizMag.com. link here

4. “CLASH OF CLUSTERS SEPARATES DARK MATTER FROM ORDINARY MATTER”
“A powerful collision of galaxy clusters captured by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope and Chandra X-ray Observatory provides evidence for dark matter and insight into its properties. Observations of the cluster known as MACS J0025.4-1222 indicate that a titanic collision has separated dark matter from ordinary matter,” quoting Universe Today. link here

5. BEST & SIMPLEST ARTICLE I HAVE SEEN ON CHEMTRAILS
“Independent researchers have found that those manmade plumes contain toxic chemicals, thus they have been given the name Chemtrails,” quoting Rense.com. link here

6. “STRUGGLING SCHOOL-AGE BOYS”
“Every other week it seems a new study comes out that adds to our already formidable arsenal of parental worries. But even by those escalating standards, the report issued last week by the federal government's National Center for Health Statistics contained a jaw-dropper: The parents of nearly one of every five boys in the United States were concerned enough about what they saw as their sons' emotional or behavioral problems that they consulted a doctor or a health-care professional. By comparison, about one out of 10 parents of girls reported these kinds of problems. (See the study here.)
The report confirms what many of us have been observing for some time now: that a lot of school-age boys are struggling. And, parents are intensely worried about them.
What is ailing our sons? Some experts suggest we are witnessing an epidemic of ADHD and say boys need more medication. Others say that environmental pollutants found in plastics, among other things, may be eroding their attention spans and their ability to regulate their emotions,” quoting Newsweek. link here

7. DO YOU REALLY WANT KNOW HOW/WHERE YOUR FOOD ORIGINATES?
A. CRUELTY IN RAISING ANIMALS FOR FOOD
“Life on the farm isn't what it used to be. The green pastures and idyllic barnyard scenes portrayed in children's books have been replaced by windowless sheds, tiny crates, wire cages, and other confinement systems integral to what is now known as "factory farming."
Today the majority of farmed animals are:
• confined to the point that they can barely move,
• denied veterinary care,
• mutilated without painkillers,
• and finally slaughtered -- often while fully conscious.
• [Ed. Note: This writer is NOT promoting becoming a vegetarian; hardly. However, this site details the cruel handling of a large majority of our animals in this country. Knowledge is power to assist in making better choices.] link here

B. “ALMOND GROWERS SUE USDA TO HALT MANDATORY CHEMICAL FUMIGATION OF RAW ALMONDS”
“After having their organic almond businesses devastated by the USDA's bizarre decision requiring mandatory chemical fumigation of almonds, the almond industry is fighting back. Fifteen American almond growers have filed a lawsuit against the USDA in an attempt to repeal the requirements that all almonds grown in California be fumigated or pasteurized. (Virtually all almonds sold in the United States are grown in California.),” quoting Natural News. link here

C. INTRODUCING THE FILM: FOOD MATTERS
“Food Matters is a documentary film informing you on the best choices you can make for you and your family's health. Helping you save time, money and effort…

In this day and age with so many companies interested in profiting from your misfortune and ill health this film will help keep your money in your pocket and your health in your hands…

Food Matters is a culmination of teachings from leading authorities in Nutrition and Natural Healing from around the globe. Here we take a look into more about the film, who is behind the production and how to share your success stories,” quoting the website. link here

9. INTRODUCING VALCENT- MAKER OF VIABLE BIO-FUEL
“Within its Industrial Division, Valcent is utilizing its revolutionary technology to develop a photosynthetic bioreactor which is being employed to grow massive quantities of fast-growing vegetable oil producing algae as feedstock for refineries that produce biodiesel, the world's fastest growing bio fuel. The Vertigro process also absorbs and sequesters carbon dioxide, potentially garnering saleable carbon credits. In joint venture with Global Green Solutions, Inc. (OTCBB: GGRN), four one-quarter acre greenhouses have been constructed and stocked with Vertigro bioreactors in El Paso, Texas. This pilot project is intended to demonstrate commercial scale production and substantiate projected vegetable oil yields of 180,000 gallons per acre per year, and confirm estimated production costs of $25 per barrel. Vertigro is scalable and multi suited for a wide variety of environments and climates. It has potential for global impact as it provides a desperately required, profitable source of vegetable oil feedstock for biodiesel and does not negatively impacting the cost of food crops, such as corn and soy,” quoting Valcent Products, Inc. link here

And a video explaining the process: link here
.

10. INTRODUCING WAVEREAPER™
“Waves work in a constant movement up and down, forth and back, and we can, with the WaveReaper™, a simple mechanical device, take advantage of this in a cheap way.

As we said, the wave moves up and down, but most generators rotate around an axle, and the wave size varies a lot and creates problems when you want to utilize the energy content of them. The current technologies regarding wave energy today is very costly, which brings that it can’t compete with other ways of making energy.

Another factor, water and generators -- yes, almost any technology is having a problem when it comes to the ocean’s salt water without more expensive design and material…

With other words, underwater technology is not cheap with these problems to solve, which means high costs and, therefore, more expensive energy for the consumer... And the solution is simple: We can use basic items, as wire, plastic barrels, one-way bearings, pulley, an axle, flywheel and generator.

That is the main component in what, up to today, is the cheapest wave energy technology in the world...
We will use a set of plastic barrels as buoys, as the cost is low and PVC isn't affected by salty ocean water. The barrels are placed near shore or longer out in deeper water, depending on amount of energy needed in particular wave plant.
Each barrel has a lifting force of approx 100 Kg.,” quoting Wavereaper.

KLEINER'S KORNER FOR WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 15, 2008
Dear Readers;

In follow-up to last week’s story about John Perkins’ book The Secret History of the American Empire The Truth About Economic Hit Men, Jackals, and How to Change the World, Mr. Perkins describes how Bolivia and other South American countries who have, in recent years democratically elected government leaders who are interested in throwing out US corporate interests that rob these countries of ownership and access to their own natural resources (see #4 below about consumerism). If those country’s Presidents did not acquiesce, the USA would assassinate them (i.e. Chile, see #5 below). Perkins said that Venezuela’s Chavez has been a champion for supporting independent South American countries and the USA would discredit him and anyone else that got in their way, due to this government’s ties to oil and other corporations’ interests.
While everyone was focused on the ridiculous hysteria surrounding GOP VP choice Palin, or watching Hurricane Ike, Chavez spoke out in support of an independent Bolivia, and received the USA’s wrath: link here

This week’s Kleiner’s Korner will cover some key issues coming to the surface for America in recent days, many issues that may be confronting for Americans, yet are no less important than scientific breakthroughs covered here weekly.

Happy Equinox wherever you are located [8:39am on Sept. 22nd in Yelm]: link here

1. THE 7TH ANNIVERSARY OF 9/11 AND KLEINER’S KORNER
Kleiner’s Korner was founded September, 2001 after a request for me to share information and make some sense of all that was then coming fast and furious. This marks the 7th anniversary of this weekly e-newsletter.
For those of you unaware, Kleiner’s Korner has been available on the internet since October, 2002 and all issues are archived at this link:
link here
Thank you for your interest and support.
Now, on to begin my 8th year...
.

2. “9/11, THE IMPORTANCE OF AN ORDINARY DAY”
Seattle radio talk-show host Dave Ross on CBS affiliate KIRO radio said this in his CBS radio September 11 commentary, which echoes this writer’s views:
“Seven years later, 9/11 reminds us to remember the importance of the ordinary day.”
Listen here: link here , click September 11th.
.

3. CHECK-OUT THE RECENT 9/11 TRUTH ADDITIONS
A. 9/11 TRUTH MISSION
“TO EXPOSE the official lies and cover-up surrounding the events of September 11th, 2001 in a way that inspires the people to overcome denial and understand the truth; namely, that elements within the US government and covert policy apparatus must have orchestrated or participated in the execution of the attacks for these to have happened in the way that they did,” quoting 9/11 Truth. link here

B. THIS IS A MUST-SEE:
“NYC, under its charter revision initiative law, has the jurisdiction to create a commission to investigate 9/11, which occurred in NYC. Cynthia McKinney, as a leader in the call for the investigation, calls for support for the ballot initiative. She talks about the government lies and what we must do to investigate the truth.”
SCROLL DOWN TO: “9/11 Investigation Initiative Press Conference -- Cynthia McKinney" [Ed. Note: Ms. McKinney is the first African American woman to have represented Georgia in the House from 1993–2003 and 2005–2007 & and the 2008 Green Party nominee for President of the United States.] link here

C. “FILMMAKER URGES INTERNAITONAL TRIBUNAL TO PROBE 9/11”
Italian film-maker Giulietto Chiesa, who was in Berlin for a screening of his documentary which questions the official US version of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, has called for an international tribunal to probe events,” quoting Deutsche Welle. link here
.

4. “THE UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF CONSUMPTION”
“From a microeconomic point of view, it's clear that companies' profitable growth is necessary to support global economic development. Knowing that between now and 2050 the environmental cost of growth will have become the principle obstacle to growth, opening the way for impossible tradeoffs between the enrichment of developing countries and the nonimpoverishment of Western countries, it emerges that the global economy is cruising at breakneck speed (and on credit) towards a future that is obviously a dead end. The awareness of the necessary and complex tradeoffs that must be implemented today to assure the future is still very recent and fragile…

So what's necessary is a fundamental reassessment of science and innovation, of engineering and marketing: the 21st century owes it to itself to be the century of the sustainable, the "bearable" revolution,” quoting Bruno Berthon, the growth and strategy managing director for the global consulting firm Accenture's Management Consulting & Integrated Markets organization, in Truthout.

.

5. “THIRTY-FIVE YEARS AGO, LATIN AMERICA EXPERIENCED ITS OWN 9/11”
“Latin America, which experienced its own Sept. 11 35 years ago, is no longer under Washington’s thumb.
On Sept. 11, 1973, the Chilean military, supported by Washington, overthrew the democratically elected president of Chile, Salvador Allende. It was a day that was burned in the memories of millions of people across the continent…
Now, 35 years after Allende’s overthrow, a lot has changed in Latin America. For starters, Chile’s current president (Michelle Bachelet) is not only a woman, but also a member of Allende’s Socialist Party.
And Washington, once the unofficial arbiter of the politics and economies of Latin America, has been sidelined, as progressive reformers have claimed victory in an ever-growing number of countries.
The political waters began turning in 1999 in Venezuela. The country’s leftist president, Hugo Chavez, came from the most unlikely of sources: the military.
Today, left-leaning leaders control almost every country of South America. These leaders are by no means a uniform bunch. But they all share the popular mandate of addressing the needs of the most disadvantaged citizens of Latin America, where nearly half the population of 550 million lives in grinding poverty.
Fulfilling campaign promises, many of these leaders have defied Washington’s economic and political strictures — first introduced in post-Sept. 11 Chile — in trying to lift millions out of poverty.
Bolivia’s Evo Morales and Ecuador’s Rafael Correa have moved to take a larger share of profits from their nations’ vast oil and gas reserves to reinvest the money in anti-poverty programs.
Morales also plans to use windfall gas profits in Bolivia — the poorest country in South America — to strengthen its faltering social security system,” quoting The Progressive.

6. “...BEYOND THE DOOM & GLOOM OF PEAK OIL, PERMANENT WAR AND CLIMATE CHAOS”
“We live at a fascinating point in history. The convergence of challenges, most particularly global warming and peak oil, have brought us to a point where we are profoundly challenged to act….
Yet, at the same time, something very powerful is stirring and is taking root the world over. People are choosing life and are manifesting that in their lives and their communities. People are starting to see peak oil as the Great Opportunity, the chance to build the world they always dreamt of,” quoting Rob Hopkins' Transition Culture, on the Organic Consumers Assn. site: link here

KLEINER'S KORNER FOR WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 8, 2008
Dear Readers;

While the country has been riveted on Party Conventions to nominate their candidate for President of the United States, there have been moves afoot to say “no” to our Federal government, moves you will not read on the front pages of USA Today, CNN or TIME Magazine:

A. “ECUADORIAN ASSEMBLY APPROVES CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS FOR NATURE"
"The articles... were passed on July 7 of this year by the 130 member Ecuador Constitutional Assembly elected nation wide to review the constitution and will be voted on by public referendum next month [September, 2008],” quoting Greenpeace Canada. link here

B. “OKLAHOMA DECLARES SOVEREIGNTY”
“Oklahoma declares sovereignty under tenth amendment to US Constitution, serving notice to the federal government to cease and desist certain mandates: link here

C. MATTERS NOT WHO IS ELECTED PRESIDENT, MOST NATIONS ARE OWNED
While the Party Conventions were garnering attention this writer was reading John Perkins’ new book The Secret History of the American Empire - The Truth About Economic Hit Men, Jackals, and How to Change the World:

“Having made a splash with Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, Perkins offers similarly entertaining but disturbing accounts of the American government wreaking havoc around the world in support of American business. In Perkins's view, American presidents willingly comply with their CEO masters, distributing foreign aid to corrupt Third World leaders who keep a share and return the rest to U.S. business for major projects, leaving their nations poor and massively in debt, and requiring more loans and slavish obedience to U.S. policy. If any leader objects, the CIA destabilizes his government, by assassination if necessary,” quoting the RSE website.

[Ed. Note: I had the sincere pleasure of meeting and chatting with Mr. Perkins when he was in Yelm in 2005. I found then, and still do today, his courage is extraordinary in exposing these actions for all the world to read. This book connected alot of the dots for me, in particular about the hanging of Saddam, the assassinations of South American democratically, elected leaders by the USA, put into perspective Venezuela’s Chavez’s actions and zeroed in on why the USA is so hated in the world. I must say, a sobering read! While many will discredit and may put this book asunder, all the more reason to have this knowledge. Perkins gives us insight on what we can do once we know the game.]: link here

2. “AWAKENINGS: RETURN TO LIFE”
“For decades now, minimally conscious people have been all but written off by the medical establishment, warehoused in nursing homes, with little hope of recovery. But as CNN's Anderson Cooper first reported last fall, incredible new discoveries are changing the way doctors view these people.

It turns out some may have been misdiagnosed and may be more aware than previously thought. What's even more surprising is that after receiving the popular sleeping pill Ambien, some minimally conscious people are actually waking up,” quoting CBS News 60 Minutes. [Ed. Note: This story worth a repeat.] link here

3. “HOW I SURVIVED AIDS”
“My name is Niro. I am a woman who has lived through a powerful, and life-transforming experience. In November 1985, I tested positive for the human immune deficiency virus HIV and was diagnosed with AIDS-related complex (ARC). I had been infected by my lover, Nado, who was unaware that he was carrying the virus,” quoting SuperConsciousness Magazine. (free registration required)

5. A TRUE LABYRINTH!
“PORTAL TO MAYA UNDERWORLD FOUND IN MEXICO?"
“A labyrinth filled with stone temples and pyramids in 14 caves—some underwater—have been uncovered on Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, archaeologists announced last week.
The discovery has experts wondering whether Maya legend inspired the construction of the underground complex—or vice versa,” quoting National Geographic. [Ed. Note: Sound familiar to Ramtha's students?]

B. “AIR-PURIFYING CHURCH WINDOWS EARLY NANOTECHNOLOGY”
“Associate Professor Zhu Huai Yong, from Queensland University of Technology's School of Physical and Chemical Sciences [Australia], said that church windows stained with gold paint purify the air when they are lit up by sunlight...

‘For centuries people appreciated only the beautiful works of art, and long life of the colours, but little did they realise that these works of art are also, in modern language, photocatalytic air purifier with nanostructured gold catalyst,’ Professor Zhu said.

He said tiny particles of gold, energised by the sun, were able to destroy air-borne pollutants like volatile organic chemical (VOCs), which may often come from new furniture, carpets and paint in good condition,” quoting ScienceDaily.

C. “A HOME THAT HEATS ITSELF”
“Michael Sykes, a builder from North Carolina, has created a home that can heat and cool itself using only solar energy. The principle at work is "phase change." Sykes has engineered the resin in the wood he builds with to change phase at 70 degrees F. The resin goes from liquid to solid and back to liquid again at room temperature. The phase change allows the walls to soak up and trap vast amounts of heat during the day--cooling the room. At night, the wood releases the heat and warms the home,” quoting Science Friday. link here

“...The scientists’ bottom line is disturbing: “What is clear is that the existing public safety standards limiting these radiation levels in nearly every country of the world look to be thousands of times too lenient. Changes are needed.” That means everyone is being exposed to too much electromagnetic radiation and at the top of the list are microwaves from microwave cell towers and cell phones,” quoting Earthfiles.com.

The group's Tongue Drive System turns the tongue into a joystick of sorts, allowing the disabled to manipulate wheelchairs, manage home appliances and control computers. The work still has a ways to go — one potential user called the design "grotesque" — but early tests are encouraging," quoting the AP. link here

10. “WHITLEY’S JOURNAL: OMINOUS NEW CLIMATE INFORMATION”
“The first new piece of data has just been announced by a group of German scientists studying annual sediment layers at a lake in Northern Germany have discovered that a period of sudden cooling 13,000 years ago started in less than a single year and lasted for 2,000 years.
This means, basically, that an extraordinary weather upheaval took place over a SINGLE SEASON, which resulted in the whole of northern Europe and much of North America becoming radically colder for thousands of years,” quoting Whitley Streiber.

KLEINER'S KORNER FOR WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 1, 2008
LABOR DAY, 2008 IN THE USA
“Labor Day is a United States federal holiday that takes place on the first Monday in September. The holiday began in 1882, originating from a desire by the Central Labor Union to create a day off for the "working man". It is still celebrated mainly as a day of rest and marks the symbolic end of summer for many. Labor Day became a national holiday by Act of Congress in 1894,” quoting Wikipedia. link here

’Labor Day differs in every essential way from the other holidays of the year in any country,’ said Samuel Gompers, founder and longtime president of the American Federation of Labor. ‘All other holidays are in a more or less degree connected with conflicts and battles of man's prowess over man, of strife and discord for greed and power, of glories achieved by one nation over another. Labor Day...is devoted to no man, living or dead, to no sect, race, or nation,” quoting the US Dept. of Labor website link here

And this sobering view of how the Bush Administration has trashed labor in this country, from Truthout. link here

1. ANOTHER 396 YEAR STORM IMPACTS NEW ORLEANS – 3 YEARS AFTER THE LAST ONE!
A. COMPARISONS TO KATRINA
“Gustav could bring a storm surge of up to 14 feet to the coast and rainfall totals of up to 20 inches. Hurricane-force winds extended 65 miles from the storm's center, and tropical storm-force winds 220 miles.
The comparisons to Katrina come easily.
At times Katrina, one of the five deadliest U.S. storms, stretched its tropical storm-force winds out about 200 miles from its center. Hurricane force winds extended about 90 miles.
Both Gustav and Katrina intensified rapidly in the Gulf of Mexico, but Katrina intensified after making landfall in Florida while Gustav hit Cuba first. Forecasters say Gustav also is moving more quickly than Katrina.
"(Gustav) is a large system similar to Katrina. The difference, at this moment, is that it's asymmetric. It doesn't have a uniform coverage like Katrina," said Chris Sisko, a meteorologist for the National Hurricane Center,” quoting NBC News. link here

B. FLOOD PROTECTION STILL NOT UP TO PAR FOR SE LOUISIANA
“Experts estimate the system is only a third of the way to where the corps wants it by 2011 - strong enough to protect against what scientists call a 100-year-storm. That type of hurricane has a 1 percent chance of occurring each year.
By comparison, the corps says Katrina was a 396-year storm, a rare catastrophic hurricane. The agency has not classified Gustav, which was spinning Thursday [Aug. 28] near Jamaica and lashing the island with tropical storm-force winds.
‘We're not close to 100-year-level protection yet,’ said Robert Turner, the regional director of the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-East. ‘It's not worth putting your life at risk if you have the means to get out,’" quoting the AP. [Ed. Note: Would you live in a city that is not protected to the 100-year-level and we have a second 396 year storm within 3 years?] link here

C. GUSTAV'S RECORD WIND GUST IN CUBA
And: “Officials measured gusts of 212 mph in the western town of Paso Real del San Diego — a new national record for maximum wind speed in a country often hit by major hurricanes, said Miguel Angel Hernandez of the Cuban Institute of Meteorology,” quoting MSNBC. link here

2. “THE TOP TWELVE FOODS FOR LONG TERM STORAGE”
Ed. Note: While on the subject of natural disasters and being prepared, this is an excellent article.

“With the recent surge in food prices it makes sense to buy foods that last and to obtain a bulk discount. However it is pointless to stock up on unhealthy food. During an emergency, having enough snacks won't increase the odds of survival. So what are some of the best foods to stock up on? The keys to consider are: shelf life, bulk price and nutritional content. This article will explore some of the best options,” quoting Natural News. link here

3. “VATICAN RECANTS WITH A STATUE OF GALILEO”
“Four hundred years after it put Galileo on trial for heresy the Vatican is to complete its rehabilitation of the great scientist by erecting a statue of him inside the Vatican walls.
The planned statue is to stand in the Vatican gardens near the apartment in which Galileo was incarcerated while awaiting trial in 1633 for advocating heliocentrism, the Copernican doctrine that the Earth revolves around the Sun.
Nicola Cabibbo, head of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and a nuclear physicist, said: ‘The Church wants to close the Galileo affair and reach a definitive understanding not only of his great legacy but also of the relationship between science and faith,” quoting UK’s Times. link here

In total, the women ranked on this list control $26 trillion worldwide…

5. “CELLS SWITCH IDENTITY IN BIOLOGICAL BREAKTHROUGH”
“Talk about an extreme makeover: Scientists have transformed one type of cell into another in living mice, a big step toward the goal of growing replacement tissues to treat a variety of diseases.
The cell identity switch turned ordinary pancreas cells into the rarer type that churns out insulin, essential for preventing diabetes. But its implications go beyond diabetes to a host of possibilities, scientists said...
The work is "a major leap" in reprogramming cells from one kind to another, said one expert not involved in the research, John Gearhart of the University of Pennsylvania,” quoting the AP. link here
.

6. “TINY CELLULAR ANTENNAE TRIGGER NEURAL STEM CELLS”
“Yale University scientists today reported evidence suggesting that the tiny cilia found on brain cells of mammals, thought to be vestiges of a primeval past, actually play a critical role in relaying molecular signals that spur creation of neurons in an area of the brain involved in mood, learning and memory.
The cilia found on brain cells of mammals until recently had been viewed as a mysterious remnant of a distant evolutionary past, when the tiny hair-like structures were used by single-celled organisms to navigate a primordial world.
“Many neuroscientists are shocked to learn that cells in the brain have cilia. Thus it was even more exciting to show that cilia have a key function in regulating the birth of new neurons in the brain,” said Matthew Sarkisian, post doctoral fellow in the department of neurobiology and co-first author on the study,” quoting Science Daily.

“NASA's new gamma-ray telescope is up and running in orbit, and going by a brand new name.
On Tuesday, NASA renamed what used to be known as the Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope, or GLAST. It's now called the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, in honor of the late Italian scientist Enrico Fermi, a pioneer in high-energy physics.
‘Enrico Fermi was the first person to suggest how cosmic particles could be accelerated to high speeds,’ said Paul Hertz, chief scientist for the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington. ‘His theory provides the foundation for understanding the powerful phenomena his namesake telescope will discover,’" quoting Space.com. link here

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"In the end, absolutely anything is about entertaining the audience.
There is no journalism anymore.
There's no news...
The one thing people don't want is the truth.”

Quote from the movie Resurrecting the Champ.

Ed. Note: This movie says “based on a true story”, however I could not imagine a modern newspaper not having a fact-checker and printing the story portrayed in the movie. I checked and the true facts are that the LA Times (not Denver, in the movie) DID fact-check the story and killed it before it ran. So, this movie about lies is based on one of the screenwriters' own creation.
