Dear Readers;
The global food shortage hit home in America last week with rice limits imposed by Costco and Wal-Mart's Sam's Club, something unthinkable in this country previously. Look for more of this as this government's misguided grains for fuel policies, global foods shortages and climate disruptions of the world's food growing regions mount.

1. WORLD’S OLDEST LIVING PERSON @ 115 IS HAVING DNA STUDIED “According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Edna Parker, 114, of Shelbyville is now the world's oldest person. Yone Minagawa, of Japan, died Monday [Aug. 13, 2007] at the age of 114. An official said Mingawa died of old age at a nursing home in southwestern Japan. Parker was born on April 20, 1893. She lives at the Heritage House Convalescent Center, about 25 miles southeast of Indianapolis. She was born in Morgan County, growing up on a farm before becoming a teacher," quoting Indianapolis TV-6.

"Two years ago, researchers from the New England Centenarian Study at Boston University took a blood sample from Parker for the group’s DNA database of supercentenarians.
Her DNA is now preserved with samples of about 100 other people who made the 110-year milestone and whose genes are being analyzed, said Dr. Tom Perls, an aging specialist who directs the project.
Only 75 living people – 64 women and 11 men – are 110 or older, according to the Gerontology Research Group of Inglewood, Calif., which verifies reports of extreme ages," quoting the Ft. Wayne, IN. Journal-Gazette. [Ed. Note: Ms. Parker turned 115 on April 20, 2008.]

Bernhard Steinberger and Trond Torsvik, of the Geological Survey of Norway, analyzed rock samples dating back 320 million years to hunt for clues in Earth's magnetic field about the history of plate motions.

International Herald Tribune (IHT) reporter Garrison Keillor absolutely captured this writer’s thoughts about the announced merger between Delta & Northwest (NWA) Airlines last week in his story titled “Singing the Delta Blues”. While Mr. Keillor grew up with NWA, I grew up in Delta country, yet had the same feelings as Mr. Keillor about Eastern Airlines. I became an Eastern Airlines employee working my way through management ranks all while Delta was our main competitor. While I am not for keeping airlines afloat just for nostalgia, NWA has a quality that will be lost under Delta’s tutelage. As an example, Northwest’ Regal Imperial Service of the 70’s was something akin to Pan Am’s outstanding in-flight Clipper Service. Their World Business Class trans-oceanic product today is far superior to Delta’s; their computer reservation system the best in the USA bar-none, their customer service some of the best in the U. S. (they do not use India call-centers) and their 3 hub airports in Detroit, Memphis & Minneapolis are continually rated the best. Don Nyrop must be turning over in his grave!

The only hope this merger will be put asunder is the fact that the pilot’s unions of the USAirways/America West merger are preventing this airline from combining operations under a single carrier. This provides a glimmer of hope that NWA pilots will nix their merger.

He had been riding his souped-up ATV with some friends on that fateful Saturday, less than a week before Thanksgiving… He gunned his machine to catch up, doing another wheelie on the back wheels. So it's no surprise the town is headquarters for a company planning to produce the world's first air-powered automobile for the U.S. by 2010. The France-based Zero Pollution Motors says it's manufacturing 10,000 vehicles in its first year and expects to sell them for about $17,800. The cars will have 75 horsepower — that's a little less than the SmartForTwo — will seat six and will produce zero emissions. "Electricity powers an onboard compressor to compress air to 4,500 pounds per square inch into a pressure tank contained in the vehicle," ZPM communications director Kevin Haydon told the Daily News from New Paltz. "This can be done in a garage overnight and it will take 1-2 hours. The compressed air is then used to power the engine."
