KLEINER'S KORNER FOR WEEK OF FEBRUARY 25, 2008
This is a Leap Year, so February 29th is added to the calendar this week: link here

1. LANDMARK BREAKTHROUGH IN PHYSICS!
“Scientists have filmed an electron in motion for the first time, using a new technique that will allow researchers to study the tiny particle's movements directly.
Previously it was impossible to photograph electrons because of their extreme speediness, so scientists had to rely on more indirect methods. These methods could only measure the effect of an electron's movement, whereas the new technique can capture the entire event.
Extremely short flashes of light are necessary to capture an electron in motion. A technology developed within the last few years can generate short pulses of intense laser light, called attosecond pulses, to get the job done,” quoting LiveScience.

2. “BLIND MAN SUDDENLY SEES AGAIN”
“Doctors aren't quite sure how it happened, but a Dubuque man can see clearly after being blind in one eye for more than a decade.

It happened after a trip to the chiropractor.

Twelve years ago Doug Harkey's left eye suddenly stopped working. ‘I woke up one day and I didn't have vision in one eye.’

And as quickly as he lost sight, he got it back.

Harkey said, ‘he just did his normal adjustment and, voila!

After a routine visit to Chiropractor Tim Stackis, Harkey says a miracle happened.

‘My blind eye starting watering after I left there and it watered for 45 minutes straight. It started making my good eye water. I went to wipe my right eye and I could see out my left again.’

Doctor Stackis said the bones in the Harkey's neck were out of alignment,” quoting ABC's KCRG. link here

3. “NEW TECHNOLOGY COULD CHANGE HOW YOU SHOP”
“A new technology could change how you shop and save you time in all kinds of ways.
Local technology companies, including Microsoft, are leading the way to find new uses for what's called RFID. And as this technology gets cheaper, retailers like Wal-Mart are jumping on the bandwagon.
But a technology that could revolutionize the industry has some wondering: Is your privacy at stake?
At Blue C Sushi, customers pick sushi as it passes by their table on a conveyor belt. What most people don't realize is that every plate has a tiny microchip embedded in it.
The idea is to know immediately what customers are taking, what the chefs need to make next, and if a plate has been on the belt too long.
The technology is called RFID, short for radio frequency identification.
An RFID tag has two parts: an antenna that's as thin as a piece of paper and in the center, and a microchip that's about the size of a grain of sand.
‘Remember the original PCs we got, we were so excited to get, there's more processing power in this chip than in the microprocessor in that old computer,’ said Chris Diorio, founder of Impinj.
Impinj, a semiconductor company with a 150 employees, is located in Seattle's Fremont neighborhood,” quoting KING-5 News in Seattle.

4. UN SEC. GEN.: CONFLICTS WORLDWIDE BEING FUELED BY WATER SHORTAGES”
"Many of today's conflicts around the world are being fuelled or exacerbated by water shortages and climate change is only making the situation worse, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told the General Assembly today [Feb. 6]," quoting the UN News Centre.

5. “BYE-BYE BANANA”
“Enjoy those banana splits while you can because in 10 years the banana may be no more… or at least may never be the same.

In this Guardian Unlimited article, science correspondent James Meek discusses the potential plight of the yellow fruit in the face of potentially deadly diseases,” quoting LiveScience. link here

6. “BABY SHAMPOO STUDY RAISES CHEMICAL CONCERNS”
“Baby shampoos, lotions and powders may expose infants to chemicals that have been linked with possible reproductive problems, a small study suggests.

The chemicals, called phthalates, are found in many ordinary products including cosmetics, toys, vinyl flooring and medical supplies. They are used to stabilize fragrances and make plastics flexible.

In the study, they were found in elevated levels in the urine of babies who’d been recently shampooed, powdered or lotioned with baby products,” quoting the AP.

7. “TOP-SECRET LIVERMORE ANTI-GERM LAB OPENS”
“A high-security laboratory where deadly microbes are being grown by scientists seeking defenses against terrorist attacks began operating in Livermore last week without public announcement, and opponents said Friday [Feb. 1] that they will go to federal court in an effort to close the facility down.

Built inside the closed campus of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, the facility has been controversial ever since it was first proposed by homeland security officials more than five years ago. Tri-Valley CARES, the East Bay watchdog group that has long fought nuclear weapons research there, has led the fight against it with protests and legal actions...

The National Nuclear Security Administration, an agency of the Energy Department, which oversees the Livermore site, announced Monday only that it had "granted approval" for Livermore to begin operating its new biosafety laboratory,” quoting the San Francisco Chronicle. 8. INTRODUCING THE “ESCAPE RESCUE SYSTEM”
“The Escape Rescue System is a building-wide solution for safe, external evacuation of building tenants and quick transporting of rescue personnel to elevated floors. The system is an array of five collapsible cabins, permanently stored on the roof in a folded position.
Upon deployment, the cabins array is lowered to the ground. It then unfolds, enabling emergency responders to board the cabins. It travels upwards until it stops opposite five elevated floors simultaneously, enabling 150 occupants to enter through specially configured exit windows. The array is then lowered to the ground and tenants exit as it refolds. The system repeats this cycle, transporting responders up and into the building and evacuating tenants as required.
The system includes the rooftop devices - storing and deploying mechanism, drive system, cabin array, independent power source; command and control mechanisms; (re) configured windows on each floor, as emergency exits (and boarding ramps); and wind stabilization mechanism.
The system, based on a unique, patent-pending technology, enjoys substantial advantages over competing concepts and other new products:
• Very high throughput capacity;
• Effective to all building heights;
• Serves both evacuation (“down”) and rescue personnel transport (“up”);
• Requires no skill or unfamiliar actions by evacuees; and is
• Suitable for all ages and physical conditions of evacuees, including disabled people.” quoting Escape Rescue Systems’ website: link here

9. “WIND FARMS NEED TECHS TO KEEP RUNNING”
“’Finding experienced techs is impossible with wind growing as fast as it is,’ Martinson [“supervising the 56-turbine operation on behalf of Enel North America Inc.”] said. ‘You get one year's worth of experience and it's like dog years.’
Last year, wind farms installed almost 3,200 turbines, boosting the nation's wind energy capacity by 45 percent and cranking out an additional 5,200 megawatts, or enough electricity to power 1.5 million homes for a year. The industry, which now accounts for a little more than 1 percent of the U.S. electric supply, expects to repeat that surge in 2008,” quoting the AP. link here
.

10. “FUTURISTIC TOY CAR RUNS ON TAP WATER”
“A remote-control car produced by the toymaker Corgi is the first household item to be powered by hydrogen fuel cell technology.
The car, called H2GO, uses hydrogen derived from tap water as its fuel and was developed by the Leicester-based company in partnership with Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies, an international firm based in Shanghai that hopes to extend the technology to home appliances.
The hydrogen is separated from oxygen in the tap water via a miniaturised unit powered by a rechargeable battery. A tiny solar panel to charge the battery is an optional extra. The H2GO, which is billed as the first “zero emissions” remote-control toy, went on show at the Nuremberg International Toy Fair. It is expected to sell for £130 from September,” quoting the UK Times.

B. “NAVY MUST COMPLY WITH NO-SONAR RULE”
“According to The Associated Press, ‘Environmental groups seeking to protect whales from the potentially harmful effects of sonar cheered a legal victory against the Navy and the Bush administration.’" link here

C. “POLAR BEARS’ PLIGHT RAISED IN DRILL BIDS FOR OIL,GAS”
"The Interior Department yesterday announced $2.6 billion in winning bids from companies seeking to drill for oil and gas in Alaska's Chukchi Sea despite protests from environmental groups and members of Congress that oil and gas exploration would endanger polar bears," quoting the Washington Post on February 7th.

E. “RETURN OF THE PLAGUE DUE TO GLOBAL WARMING?”
“While cases tapered off in the mid-20th century, the World Health Organization (WHO) now classifies plague as "re-emerging." But since the early 1990s, plague has returned to places — including India, Zambia, Mozambique, Algeria and parts of China — that had not seen it in many years or even decades. Its global footprint has also shifted, according to a paper published last month in the journal PLoS Medicine. In the 1970s, most plague cases were in Asia; today, more than 90% are in Africa. The conundrum for epidemiologists: Why is human plague reappearing now…,” quoting TIME.

F. “WARMING COULD TRIGGER INSECT FOOD FRENZY”
“Global warming could bring about a veritable insect explosion, if past performance is an indication of future gains.
Just such a buggy invasion swarmed parts of the northern United States during an abrupt global warming event more than 50 million years ago, a new study of leaf fossils shows.
The study's findings, detailed in the Feb. 11 issue of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, indicate that the same thing could happen during our current period of warming,” quoting LiveScience. link here

C. LONDON'S "TOWER OF DOOM" TO BE REMOVED
"A mobile phone company is to remove a mast from a block of flats after seven residents were struck down by cancer...
The cancer rate on the top floor - where residents of five of the eight flats have been affected and the three who died all lived - is 20 per cent, ten times the national average," quoting This Is London: link here
.

2. FOLLOW-UP: DOOMSDAY SEED VAULT OPENS IN NORWAY THIS MONTH
“A mountainside near the town [Longyearbyen, a village on the island of Spitsbergen, part of Norway's Svalbard archipelago.] was chosen as the home for the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, a "doomsday" seed bank that will store backup copies of as many as three million different crop varieties in case of a worldwide catastrophe.

The high-tech vault, which will open for storage in February 2008, is going to "put an end to extinction [of] agricultural crops," said Cary Fowler, executive director of the Global Crop Diversity Trust in Rome, Italy, which is the leading force behind the project.

The mission is crucial, Fowler noted, because the stored seeds provide researchers with the raw genetic materials needed to adapt the global food supply to survive climate change as well as water and energy shortages,” quoting National Geographic. link here

B. “CALIFORNIA FARMERS WANT TO SELL WATER”
“With water becoming increasingly precious in California, a rising number of farmers figure they can make more money by selling their water than by actually growing something.

Because farmers get their water at subsidized rates, some of them see financial opportunity this year in selling their allotments to Los Angeles and other desperately thirsty cities across Southern California, as well as to other farms…

What effect these deals will have on produce prices remains to be seen, because the negotiations are still going on and it is not yet clear how many acres will be taken out of production. But California grows most of the nation's winter vegetables and about 80 percent of the world's almonds, and is the No. 2 rice state, behind Arkansas,” quoting the AP. link here

6. FLOURIDE IN MUNICIPAL WATER SUPPLIES IS GETTING A SECOND LOOK
A. “HEALTH PROFESSIONALS CALL FOR END TO WATER FLOURIDATION”
“As detailed in this ABC News Story, over 600 (now over 1,200) professionals are urging Congress to stop water fluoridation until Congressional hearings are conducted. They cite new scientific evidence that fluoridation, long promoted to fight tooth decay, is ineffective and has serious health risks.

Signers include a Nobel Prize winner, three members of the prestigious 2006 National Research Council (NRC) panel that reported on fluoride’s toxicology, two officers in the Union representing professionals at EPA headquarters, the President of the International Society of Doctors for the Environment, and hundreds of medical, dental, academic, scientific and environmental professionals,” quoting this under-four-minute YouTube video. link here

B. “SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN: SECOND THOUGHTS ABOUT FLOURIDE”
“KEY CONCEPTS
• Researchers are intensifying their scrutiny of fluoride, which is added to most public water systems in the U.S. Some recent studies suggest that overconsumption of fluoride can raise the risks of disorders affecting teeth, bones, the brain and the thyroid gland.
• A 2006 report by a committee of the National Research Council recommended that the federal government lower its current limit for fluoride in drinking water because of health risks to both children and adults,” quoting SCIAM. link here
.

7. “MIT SCIENTISTS UNVEIL AN INVENTION CALLED “WITRICITY” THAT COULD RENDER POWER CORDS OBSOLETE
“In a dramatic breakthrough that could change the way we use electricity, scientists have made a 60-watt light bulb glow by transmitting energy to it wirelessly.
In the past, beaming electromagnetic energy has proven difficult because it scatters broadly, radiating in all directions rather than to just the intended electrical device.
A series of successful experiments conducted at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology suggests otherwise, however. MIT physicists believe they can project a magnetic field from a length of wire whose ends nearly touch. The gap between the ends makes electrons surge back and forth at a specific rate, creating a magnetic field with a characteristic frequency. Since the electrons in a matching coil would have the same frequency, they would pick up the magnetic field.

Just as a singer can break a crystal glass that resonates at the same frequency as her voice, the MIT scientists discovered how to get a recharging device and a power-hungry gadget to resonate at the same frequency, allowing the efficient exchange of energy,” quoting NewsMax. link here

9. MEMORY LOSS BEING DEALT BLOWS BY SCIENCE
A. “SCIENTISTS DISCOVER WAY TO REVERSE LOSS OF MEMORY”
“Scientists performing experimental brain surgery on a man aged 50 have stumbled across a mechanism that could unlock how memory works.

The accidental breakthrough came during an experiment originally intended to suppress the obese man's appetite, using the increasingly successful technique of deep-brain stimulation. Electrodes were pushed into the man's brain and stimulated with an electric current. Instead of losing appetite, the patient instead had an intense experience of déjà vu. He recalled, in intricate detail, a scene from 30 years earlier. More tests showed his ability to learn was dramatically improved when the current was switched on and his brain stimulated.

Scientists are now applying the technique in the first trial of the treatment in patients with Alzheimer's disease,” quoting UK’s Independent. link here

B. “THE HELMET THAT COULD TURN BACK THE SYMPTOMS OF ALZHEIMER’S”
“An experimental helmet which scientists say could reverse the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease within weeks of being used is to be tried out on patients.
The strange-looking headgear - which has to be worn for ten minutes every day - bathes the brain with infra-red light and stimulates the growth of brain cells.
Its creators believe it could reverse the symptoms of dementia - such as memory loss and anxiety - after only four weeks.
Alzheimer's disease charities last night described the treatment as "potentially life- changing" - but stressed that the research was still at the very early stages…
The helmet is the creation of Dr Gordon Dougal, a director of Virulite, a medical research company based in County Durham.

It follows a study at the University of Sunderland which found infra-red light can reverse memory loss in mice.

Dr Dougal claims that only ten minutes under the hat a day is enough to have an effect,” quoting UK’s Daily Mail. link here

C. “THE BRAIN FITNESS PROGRAM”
“This program presents a workout to help viewers get their brains in better shape. The Brain Fitness Program is based on neuro-plasticity, the ability of the brain to change and adapt -- even rewire itself. Dr. Michael Merzenich of the University of California San Francisco and his colleagues around the world bring the research findings, along with a scientifically based set of brain exercises, to PBS viewers in this innovative and life-altering program. Peter Coyote narrates,” quoting PBS. link here

10. "DOLING OUT THE PLACEBO EFFECT"
"With a growing belief in mind-body connections, more doctors see smart therapy in 'dummy pill.'

Now, as a recent study published in the Archives of General Internal Medicine found, physicians on the front lines of patient care are reaching for the power of Obecalp -- a backward spelling of the word "placebo" -- with surprising frequency, and for different reasons, than patients might suspect.

In a survey published in the January issue of the Journal of General Internal Medicine, about 45% of Chicago-area physicians responding acknowledged that they have treated patients with a placebo," quoting the Los Angeles Times.

11. ENVIRONMENTAL NEWS
A. “SHIFTING HEAT LAYERS ABOVE ARCTIC TO BLAME FOR ICE CRISIS: STUDY”
“The dramatic loss of the Arctic ice cap may have been triggered by disruption to the thermal layers of atmosphere stacked over Earth's far north, according to Swedish research to be published Thursday.

The study, published in Nature, offers a new explanation for the rise in the Arctic's surface temperature, which over the past century has been nearly two degrees Celsius (3.6 Fahrenheit), or twice the global average.
Until now, the big suspect in "Arctic amplification" has been reflectivity of sunlight,” quoting the AFP. link here

HAPPY VALENTINES DAY! link here

1. "KIDS PASS UP CARTOONS FOR SCIENCE"
"'As the solid heats up, it sublimates and inflates the balloon,' explained Joyce A. Trageser, the supervisor of school programs at the Maryland Science Center and the instructor for its first Saturday Morning Science workshop of the year. 'Think of it -- it's a solid changing to a gas without becoming a liquid. That's pretty amazing.'

The trick was one of more than a dozen wow-worthy, hands-on demonstrations in a 90-minute program about "Fire and Ice." The Science Center will rotate through a series of five workshops -- though they call them "funshops" -- over the next 18 Saturday mornings.

'We want to engage visitors in fun, interactive learning,' Trageser said. 'Once you start doing the activities, we relate the science to things in everyday life. We hear so much today about kids lacking in scientific and mathematical knowledge. This is a way to relate science to their lives and make it really active.'

Other programs in the series explore weather forecasting, where garbage goes, what lies beneath the skin of the human body and the sources of human energy," quoting the Baltimore Sun.

2. “AUSTRALIAN GIRL SWITCHES BLOOD TYPE AFTER LIVER TRANSPLANT: DOCTORS”
“A young girl spontaneously switched blood types and took on her donor's immune system following a liver transplant, doctors told French news agency AFP Thursday [Jan. 24].

It was the first time doctors had seen such an occurrence, according to a report in this week's New England Journal of Medicine.

Demi-Lee Brennan of Australia was seriously ill with liver failure when she received the transplant at Sydney Hospital.

Nine months later, doctors discovered the girl, who was age 9 at the time, had changed blood types and switched immune systems after stem cells from the new liver migrated to her bone marrow.

Michael Stormon, a hepatologist treating her, said the girl is now age 15 and doing well,” quoting the AFP. link here

3. 'BIRTH, THE AMERICAN WAY”
Newsweek Magazine presented this fabulous report:
“There are many births in the documentary film ‘The Business of Being Born,’ including a scene of former talk-show host Ricki Lake giving birth naked in her tub. But the image that viewers may find most shocking is that of a baby being cut out of a woman's abdomen via Caesarean. This, according to Lake, the executive producer of the film, and Abby Epstein, the film's director, is the right reaction: one of their messages is that C-sections should only be performed when needed to guarantee the well-being of the mother and infant, and should not be a first choice for healthy mothers. New research into the risks associated with elective Caesareans supports their view.” link here
.

4. “WEAPONS OF MASS ELATION”
This Mother Jones report from Spring, 2003 is as eye-opening today as then:
“What should the military do when faced with terrorists who have taken hostages? The answer, according to the Pentagon, may be to give the bad guys some Valium. In recent years, the military has been researching the possibility of using "club drugs" like Special K and anti-depressants like Prozac as "non-lethal weapons" in counterterrorist and peacekeeping operations. "We need something besides tear gas -- like calmative, anesthetic agents -- that would put people to sleep or in a good mood," explains Susan Levine, research director of the government's Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Directorate. A study for the Marine Corps conducted by Pennsylvania State University concludes that such feel-good weapons are both "achievable and desirable," noting that drinking water spiked with Ecstasy or rubber bullets filled with Zoloft could "produce less anxious, less aggressive, more tranquil-like behavior." link here

5. “WORK STRESS CHANGES YOUR BODY”
“A stressful job has a direct biological impact on the body, raising the risk of heart disease, research has indicated.

The study reported in the European Heart Journal focused on more than 10,000 British civil servants.

Those under 50 who said their work was stressful were nearly 70% more likely to develop heart disease than the stress-free.

The stressed had less time to exercise and eat well - but they also showed signs of important biochemical changes,” quoting the BBC. link here

6. “BIG BUSINESS SAYS CLIMATE CHANGE LOW ON THE AGENDA”
UK’S Independent says, ”Global warming ranks far down the concerns of the world's biggest companies, despite world leaders' hopes that they will pioneer solutions to the impending climate crisis, a startling survey will reveal this week.

Nearly nine in 10 of them do not rate it as a priority, says the study, which canvassed more than 500 big businesses in Britain, the US, Germany, Japan, India and China. Nearly twice as many see climate change as imposing costs on their business as those who believe it presents an opportunity to make money. And the report's publishers believe that big business will concentrate even less on climate change as the world economy deteriorates.
The survey demolishes George Bush's insistence that global warming is best addressed through voluntary measures undertaken by business – and does so at the most embarrassing juncture for the embattled President.” link here

7. “A GREEN ENERGY INDUSTRY TAKES ROOT IN CALIFORNIA”
“While interest in alternative energy is climbing across the United States, solar power especially is rising in California, the product of billions of dollars in investment and mountains of enthusiasm.

In recent months, the industry has added several thousand jobs in the production of solar energy cells and installation of solar panels on roofs. A spate of investment has also aimed at making solar power more efficient and less costly than natural gas and coal.

Entrepreneurs, academics and policy makers say this era’s solar industry is different from what was tried in the 1970s, when Jerry Brown, then the governor of California, invited derision for envisioning a future fueled by alternative energy,” quoting the New York Times. link here

8. “KIDS MAY BE EATING PESTICIDES WITH THEIR VEGETABLES”
“A new study, involving kids on Mercer Island [Seattle area], shows they're eating pesticides along with some of their food.

Researchers found evidence of pesticides, typically used on food, in the saliva and urine of a sample of kids. When they switched the kids to organic food, for a week, the pesticide levels went down or disappeared. Study author, Dr. Chensheng Lu, says after the week on organic food they asked the children to resume their normal diet and found that the elevated levels of pesticides had returned.

“…On average, the planet is covered with little more than 3 feet of topsoil – the shallow skin of nutrient-rich matter that sustains most of our food and appears to play a critical role in supporting life on Earth.

‘We’re losing more and more of it every day,’ said David Montgomery, a geologist at the University of Washington. ‘The estimate is that we are now losing about 1 percent of our topsoil every year to erosion, most of this caused by agriculture,’” quoting the Seattle P-I on January 22. link here

“The Sahara, the Gobi, the Chihuahuan--all are great deserts. But what about the South Pacific's subtropical gyre? This "biological desert" within a swirling expanse of nutrient-starved saltwater is the largest, and least productive, ecosystem of the South Pacific. Together with the subtropical gyres in other oceans, biological deserts cover 40% of Earth's surface. But their relative obscurity may be about to change. Researchers are reporting that the ocean's biological deserts have been expanding, and they are growing much faster than global warming models predict," quoting ScienceNow. link here

“In what a leading orca researcher calls an ominous sign, a group of the killer whales that frequent Puget Sound and nearby waters has turned up feeding off the coast of California for the sixth winter in a row.

L pod, one of three orca families that frequent Washington waters, was spotted Sunday [Jan. 27] off Monterey Bay.

The fact that the orcas are apparently ranging farther than they once did suggests that Washington's winter stocks of Chinook, the orcas' main food, have dropped too low to support them, said Ken Balcomb, a San Juan Island scientist who has studied the orcas since mid-1970s,” quoting KING-5 News in Seattle. link here

G. “FREE LOLITA” MOVEMENT GETTING MORE PRESS
As this writer has presented here many times,
“For more than a decade, Howard Garrett has worked tirelessly out of his home on Whidbey Island, Wash., to return an orca whale named Lolita to her native waters. In 1995--inspired by the campaign to release Keiko, the "Free Willy" whale--he teamed with local politicians, offering the Florida aquarium where Lolita works a million dollars to reunite her with the pod of whales she grew up with, off the coast of Washington state. In 1997, he spent two years in Miami--unpaid--working to garner public attention for Lolita's cause; after nearly four decades in captivity, she's served her time, Garrett believes. Every year since then, his organization, the nonprofit advocacy group Orca Network, has held a beachside commemoration of the day Lolita was plucked from her family in the icy waters of Puget Sound….

The Miami Seaquarium, where Lolita has lived for the past 37 years, has long been unwilling to consider the idea of releasing her and is calling the latest campaign a "publicity grab" by uninformed activists. The park's general manager, Andrew Hertz (the son of the park's owner, Arthur Hertz), contends that Lolita is healthy and happy--performing two shows a day--and quips that ‘you can't make a 7,000 pound animal do what she doesn't want to do,’" quoting Newsweek. link here

[Ed. Note: As a 20-something student-manager for the University of Miami Football Team, I had the sincere pleasure of knowing one of UMs then-ardent-supporters Art Hertz in the 1970s. Were I to see him today, 30 years later, I would share that I am a Free Lolita supporter!]

J. MIDWEST RECORDS MAJOR TEMPERATURE DROP
“Temperatures took a major tumble in the Buffalo area Wednesday [Jan. 30] morning, but don't try calling the Guinness Book of World Records on our temperature drop.

Anyone out at 3 a.m. Wednesday -- perhaps walking the dog or returning from a local bar -- would have encountered a balmy reading of 53 degrees.
By 9 a.m., the figure had plummeted all the way to 18 degrees.

That 35-degree drop included 21 degrees in one hour -- to 29 from 50 degrees between 3:30 and 4:30 a.m.

Just before noon, the temperature fell to 17 degrees.

Tuesday, the same cold front had put a quicker shiver on St. Louis.

“The U.S. Capitol is spending more than $500 million on a new underground visitor center, a high-tech fortress slated to open next year. Its location at the foot of the Capitol steps facing the Supreme Court makes it well-situated to serve visitors and, some say, to shelter lawmakers in the event of a terrorist attack….

Although architects designed it before the 2001 terrorist attacks, the Capitol Visitor Center is rumored to be a haven for lawmakers, but no one will officially confirm that. The architects amended the floor plans many times to add security features after the 2001 terrorist attacks and subsequent anthrax mail threats directed at Capitol Hill offices. The lowest level of the complex is off-limits to the public.

In the absence of official acknowledgment, speculation has focused on the lowest of the structure’s three levels. ‘There’s obviously a bunker there,’ said John Pike, director of GlobalSecurity.org. ‘How could it be otherwise? They’ve got a bunker at the White House, and there’s a bunker out at Camp David. KLEINER'S KORNER FOR WEEK OF FEBRUARY 4, 2008
Dear Readers;

MORGAN STANLEY'S FORMER CHIEF GLOBAL STRATEGIST ADVISES WEALTHY TO BUY "A REMOTE FARM OR RANCH, STOCKING IT WITH "SEED, FERTILIZER, CANNED FOOD, WINE, MEDICINE, CLOTHES, ETC.'"

"Barton Biggs has some offbeat advice for the rich: Insure yourself against war and disaster by buying a remote farm or ranch and stocking it with ``seed, fertilizer, canned food, wine, medicine, clothes, etc.'' The ``etc.'' must mean guns. ``A few rounds over the approaching brigands' heads would probably be a compelling persuader that there are easier farms to pillage,'' he writes in his new book, ``Wealth, War and Wisdom.'' Biggs is no paranoid survivalist. He was chief global strategist at Morgan Stanley before leaving in 2003 to form hedge fund Traxis Partners. He doesn't lock and load until the last page of this smart look at how World War II warped share prices, gutted wealth and remains a warning to investors. His message: Listen to markets, learn from history and prepare for the worst," quoting Bloomberg. link here

Ramtha said to do this in 1986-89 and was called a "doom and gloomer." Again, we all know how wise Ramtha was back then....and is to this day. Now, major renowned world citizens are coming forward with this counsel...

2. “NASA ASTRONAUT CLAIMS ALIEN PRESENCE”
“Space shuttle columbia during STS-80 took a crew of five astronauts into a 17 day, 15 hour and 54 minute mission around the earth, the longest flight in the history of this vehicle. During this lengthy flight a very strange event occurred that even had crewman Dr. Story Musgrave unable to explain what he observed from the shuttle windows. A large disc shaped object appeared below the Columbia…
During an earlier interview, Dr. Musgrave stated he attempted to communicate with ET life forms during each of his six missions.

He actually asked them to take him with them. Now that's an astronaut with a lot of courage. Dr. Musgrave retired after this flight from NASA. Since then he's been spreading his considered opinion that alien life exists. When Musgrave speaks of this, it's no great leap for one to assume he's admitting knowledge of alien life. As the final slide of a "Grey" ET was shown during a recent astronomy presentation by Dr. Musgrave, he made this surprising comment: 'These guys are real,'” quoting Agora Cosmopolitan.

Details of the identities of the twins involved have been kept secret, but Lord Alton said the pair did not realise they were related until after their marriage,” quoting the BBC.

"The sewage treatment plant in al-Zaytoun neighbourhood in Gaza City requires 20,000 litres of fuel a day. Last week Israel ceased delivery of all fuel and supplies to Gaza. The consequences have been catastrophic.

Without fuel to pump it away, the waste backs up, flooding the streets and clogging the plumbing. The local ministry of health has declared this an environmental catastrophe.

Doctors have warned that a medical catastrophe could follow by way of spread of cholera and other diseases. That is at a time when not even life-saving medical services are on offer any more.

The £16m system, called Rapid Watch, will use the latest underwater monitoring techniques to check whether cold water pouring south from melting Arctic ice sheets is diverting the current's warm waters away from Britain.
Without the Gulf Stream, the UK would be as cold as Canada in winter. Ports could freeze over and snowstorms and blizzards would paralyse the country," quoting UK's Observer. link here

B. SOUTHEAST ALASKA OVERFISHED -- HALIBUT REDUCTIONS FOR 2008
"Fishermen in the state's southeast will see the number of halibut they are allowed to catch drop for the second year in a row. The limit is 6.21 million pounds, a 28% reduction from 2007. The region has been overfished, says the International Pacific Halibut Commission, which sets the limits," quoting the AP. link here

C. “PLAN TO ALLOW LOGGING IN ALASKAN FOREST”
“More than 3 million acres in Alaska's Tongass National Forest would be open to logging under a federal plan that supporters believe will revive the state's struggling timber industry.

Environmentalists, however, fear that the proposal will devastate the forest,” quoting the AP. [Ed. Note: If you have ever been to the Tongass, you would be aghast!] link here

D. “ICELESS ARCTIC SEEN BY SUMMER 2013”
“The Arctic Ocean could be entirely ice-free during the summer months as soon as 2013, said two scientists at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey who have been studying the polar ice cap.

Wieslaw Maslowski, research associate professor in the Navy school's Department of Oceanography, and fellow researcher Jaclyn Clement Kinney have been modeling and monitoring the arctic ice melt by analyzing data provided by submarines and satellites, scientific studies and records over the past several decades. They foresee a sudden meltdown in the near future,” quoting the Monterey [Ca.] Herald. link here
