| KLEINER'S KORNER FOR WEEK OF JANUARY 28, 2008
|
Dear Readers,
Very interesting what is happening with the case of the Navy using huge sonars that have been proven to kill marine mammals. Reported here last week was a report that President Bush exempted the Navy from a Federal Court that imposed the strongest-ever protections for whales against an onslaught of military sonar, so it can continue using sonar in its anti-submarine warfare training off the California coast. Now, the Christian Science Monitor is reporting that, "Environmental groups expect a federal judge to rule against the Navy in the coming days, nullifying an exemption signed by Bush last week that environmentalists believe was unconstitutional. The president, says Richard Kendall, an attorney representing the National Resources Defense Council, used an agency within his own executive branch to overturn the federal court ruling limiting the use of sonar during the exercises." [Ed. Note: What laws and courts will this President defy next? Stay tuned to NRDC for the latest news on this issue:

2. PREVIOUS 60 MINUTES PIECES ON THE KK RE-AIRED & WORTH A REPEAT On Sunday, January 20, 2007,60 Minutes was preempted …for a special feature from CBS News. "CBS News Presents: "The Age of Warming" takes correspondent Scott Pelley from the bottom of the world and then to its top, where the effects of global warming are most striking. The awesome scenery belies the serious problems of receding ice and endangered wildlife, which are just the obvious effects in a phenomenon with cascading consequences. Scientists also point out that higher temperatures are warming our oceans, which directly affect the intensity of hurricanes like Katrina. And because global warming has become such a big issue, it has become politicized: a climate scientist tells Pelley he has been restricted by the Bush administration on what he can say about global warming." 3. “SCIENTISTS CREATE WORLD’S BLACKEST BLACK” “Researchers say they have made the darkest material on Earth, a substance so black it absorbs more than 99.9 percent of light. Made from tiny tubes of carbon standing on end, this material is almost 30 times darker than a carbon substance used by the National Institute of Standards and Technology as the current benchmark of blackness. And the material is close to the long-sought ideal black, which could absorb all colors of light and reflect none,” quoting Reuters.

D. TIME MAGAZINE PUTS LAST WEEK'S U.S. STIMULUS PACKAGE INTO PERSPECTIVE "Are you at all suspicious? Does it sound too good to be true? Here we are, plunging into a recession...the government should go out and borrow even more money and pass it around for us to spend. The experts caution that for maximum stimulus effect, we must be sure to spend it immediately. No squirreling it away for a rainy day. 2. NASA SAYS NEW MAJOR SOLAR CYCLE TO START SOON "Hang on to your cell phone, a new solar cycle has just begun. "On January 4, 2008, a reversed-polarity sunspot appeared—and this signals the start of Solar Cycle 24," says David Hathaway of the Marshall Space Flight Center... "New solar cycles always begin with a high-latitude, reversed polarity sunspot," explains Hathaway. "Reversed polarity" means a sunspot with opposite magnetic polarity compared to sunspots from the previous solar cycle. "High-latitude" refers to the sun's grid of latitude and longitude. Old cycle spots congregate near the sun's equator. New cycle spots appear higher, around 25 or 30 degrees latitude... Much of this is still years away. 'Intense solar activity won't begin immediately,' notes Hathaway. 'Solar cycles usually take a few years to build from solar minimum (where we are now) to Solar Max, expected in 2011 or 2012,'" quoting NASA.

3. “SOURCE OF MYSTERIOUS ANTI-MATTER FOUND” “Antimatter, which annihilates matter upon contact, seems to be rare in the universe. Still, for decades, scientists had clues that a vast cloud of antimatter lurked in space, but they did not know where it came from. The mysterious source of this antimatter has now been discovered -- stars getting ripped apart by neutron stars and black holes. While antimatter propulsion systems are so far the stuff of science fiction, antimatter is very real,” quoting Space.com.

4. “COLOSSAL BLACK HOLE SHATTERS THE SCALES” “The most massive black hole in the universe tips the cosmic scales at 18 billion times more massive than the sun, astronomers suggest today at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society. Even though researchers suggested black holes up to this mass might exist in quasars, this is the first direct confirmation of such a behemoth. The hefty gravity well is six times more massive than the previous record and is orbited by a smaller black hole, which allowed the measurement of the giant's mass,” quoting Space.com.

5. INTERESTING CONCEPT ON TODAY’S HEALTH CRISIS “Healing the Gerson Way, written by Charlotte Gerson, founder of the Gerson Institute and daughter of Max Gerson, MD, and Beata Bishop, is a complete guide to the theory and practice of the Gerson Therapy developed over 80 years ago by Dr. Max Gerson, MD (1881-1959), It shows that increasingly denatured, nutritionally empty, toxic modern diet is the main cause of today’s worsening health crisis. The book offers the solution in the form of a brilliant, precision-built nutritional program that eliminates the underlying causes of disease, leading to lasting cures,” quoting The Gerson Institute.

6. AS IF THIS IS ANY SURPRISE! “Credit Card Debt Soars as House Prices Plunge” Dean Baker, writing for The Center for Economic and Policy Research, reports: "The current rate of house price decline will destroy $2.2 trillion of wealth this year. The Federal Reserve Board reported yesterday that credit card debt rose at an 11.3 percent annual rate in November after rising at an 8.5 percent rate in October. By comparison, credit card debt rose at a rate between 2 percent and 4 percent from 2003 to 2005,’" from Truthout.

7. AIRPORT SECURITY NEWS A. REAL ID RULES LOOSENED, BUT [WA.] STATE STILL BALKS” The federal government Friday [Jan. 11] issued national standards that states would have to meet in order for driver's licenses to qualify as identification at airports and federal buildings, setting the stage for a confrontation with Washington and 16 other states that have voted not to cooperate. Under a measure known as Real ID legislation, the states must comply by May 11, the third anniversary of the measure's enactment, or obtain a waiver from the Homeland Security Department. Meeting the May 11 deadline is impossible because the regulations have been delayed so long, but Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said Friday that his department would issue a waiver to states that promised to comply later. He laid out a long schedule, with the final deadline in December 2017, 16 years after the events that prompted the law, the Sept. 11 attacks. Several states have voted not to comply. One is Washington,” quoting the Seattle Times.

B. RESEARCHERS: AIRPORTS NO SAFER WITH ALL OF THE SECURITY (NO SURPRISE HERE!) “Airport security lines can annoy passengers, but there is no evidence that they make flying any safer, U.S. researchers reported on Thursday [Dec. 20]. A team at the Harvard School of Public Health could not find any studies showing whether the time-consuming process of X-raying carry-on luggage prevents hijackings or attacks. They also found no evidence to suggest that making passengers take off their shoes and confiscating small items prevented any incidents,” quoting Reuters. [Ed. Note: As if this is any surprise! It’s all a design to get the public to freely give up their liberties.]

8. WHAT ELSE IS NEW? “DIRTY SECRET: GREEN CARS AUTOMAKERS WON’T SELL YOU” “You can't actually buy this ultra-green Accord, or the four-cylinder version that also produces near-zero pollution. That is, unless you live in California, New York or six other northeast states that follow California's tougher pollution rules. Only there can you buy this Accord, or the roughly two dozen other models that meet so-called Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle standards, PZEV for short…So, just how green is a PZEV machine? Well, if you just cut your lawn with a gas mower, congratulations, you just put out more pollution in one hour than these cars do in 2,000 miles of driving,” quoting MSN.

9. EAT SUSHI DO YOU? IS WORLD APPETITE FOR SUSHI DECIMATING THE BLUEFIN TUNA? “Ever wonder how that tuna got on your sushi plate? …, the coveted king of sushi – the bluefin tuna – may become a scarce, if not extinct, species. Correspondent Bob Simon follows the chain of events backward, from the docks in Japan back to the Mediterranean Sea, where the fish spawn and are captured the old-fashioned way and with newer, more efficient purse seining that threatens to deplete the stock. The prospect is a daunting one for Italian fisherman-cum-tuna observer Roberto Mielgo. ‘All I can say, is that if we carry on like this, we are bound to catastrophe. I mean, it's as simple as that. No more fish. No more industry. No more culture,’” quoting CBS News 60 Minutes.

C. “WHALES WIN BIG” THEN PRES. BUSH OVERTURNS RULING “A federal court in California has just imposed the strongest-ever protections for whales against an onslaught of military sonar... The Navy itself estimates that the booming sonar would harass or harm marine mammals some 170,000 times — and cause permanent injury in more than 400 cases. U.S. District Judge Florence-Marie Cooper said the Navy’s existing plan for protecting marine mammals was “grossly inadequate,’” quoting NRDC.

| KLEINER'S KORNER FOR WEEK OF JANUARY 14, 2008
|
Dear Readers,
Kleiner's Korner has been experiencing some web issues, hence the delay in getting these out to you. Thank you for your interest and patience.
1. “PLANET EARTH 2007: TOP 10 SCIENCE REVELATIONS” “From the damning climate report by the IPCC to projections of an impending peak in global oil production, 2007 was full of startling findings and prognostications about the blue marble we call home. Here are the stories we think could reverberate most significantly for years to come,” quoting LiveScience.

2. HONEY BEING TOUTED FOR WOUNDS “Amid growing concern over drug-resistant superbugs and nonhealing wounds that endanger diabetes patients, nature's original antibiotic — honey — is making a comeback. Honey dressings and gels, as well as tubes of manuka honey, have been gaining in popularity overseas, fuelled by scientific reports on their medical benefits and occasional news accounts of the dramatic recovery of a patient with a longtime wound that suddenly healed,” quoting the CBC.

4. “SCIENTISTS CREATE MACHINE THAT KNOWS WHAT YOU’RE THINKING” “Scientists have developed a machine which is capable of reading our mind and revealing our most private thoughts. American researchers from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, found that, with the aid of a sophisticated scanner and computer programme, they were able to determine how the brain lights up when thinking about different subjects. Using an advanced form of MRI scanner, they analysed how the brain reacted to ten drawings of tools and buildings. They then used a computer programme to work out whether a person was thinking about a tool or a building. The researchers' analysis was found to be 97 per cent accurate but they went on to show that they could distinguish between two similar objects, such as two different tools, almost as successfully,” quoting UK’s Daily Mail.

6. “BIG BROTHER GETS BIGGER, SAYS GLOBAL PRIVACY STUDY” “In terms of statutory protections and privacy enforcement, the United States is the worst country in the "democratic world" and is outranked by both India and the Philippines on overall privacy protection. The U.S. has fallen into the "black" category reserved for countries with "endemic surveillance."
In the European Union, the worst-ranked country is the United Kingdom, particularly with regard to surveillance. Specifically, councils in England and Wales continue to spread surveillance policies, including RFID, CCTV, ID and data sharing, and road user tracking, according to the report,” quoting C/Net News.com.

7. THREE GALAXIES LOOK LIKE TINKER BELL “There once was a galaxy known as ESO 593-IG 008. It was thought to be a relatively mild-mannered galaxy, even though scientists believed it was a collision of two different galaxies; one a barred spiral and the other an irregular galaxy. But now, an international team of astronomers has discovered that it actually is a stunning rare case of three interacting galaxies, with the third galaxy forming stars at a frantic rate.
Using adaptive optics on the European Southern Observatory’s (ESO) Very Large Telescope (VLT), astronomers were able to see through the all-pervasive dust clouds of the object that has been dubbed as “The Bird“ because of its resemblance to a winged creature. With the adaptive optics of what’s called the NACO instrument, very fine details were able to be resolved,” quoting Universe Today.

8. "STUDY...TEENS WILLING TO BEND RULES TO GET AHEAD" "The next generation to enter the work force may be more likely to cheat and lie than their more senior colleagues, according to a recent survey.
Three-quarters of teenagers believe they are fully prepared to make ethical decisions, yet nearly 40 percent also believe that lying, cheating or violence are necessary to succeed, according to the survey conducted by Junior Achievement Worldwide.
More than half of those teens said their personal desire to succeed is the rationale....
The number of teens willing to bend the rules has more than doubled since the survey was conducted in 2003, according to Ainar Aijala, chairman of Junior Achievement Worldwide," quoting the Seattle P-I. [Ed. Note: This writer has seen witnessed this trend as well, and in particular, recently.]

9. STUDY: "DRIVERS ON CELL PHONES CLOG TRAFFIC" "Motorists who talk on cell phones drive slower on the freeway, pass sluggish vehicles less often and take longer to complete their trips, according to a University of Utah study that suggests drivers on cell phones congest traffic. 'At the end of the day, the average person's commute is longer because of that person who is on the cell phone right in front of them,' says University of Utah psychology Professor Dave Strayer, leader of the research team. 'That SOB on the cell phone is slowing you down and making you late,'" quoting the University of Utah Press Release.

10. INTRODUCING “IN CASE OF EMERGENCY (ICE) CAMPAIGN” “The idea of entering the acronym "ICE" — "In Case of Emergency" — beside the numbers of people one wants to identify as next of kin in one's cell phone contact list was first suggested in 2004 by Bob Brotchie of the East Anglian Ambulance service. In April 2005, a National "ICE" Awareness Campaign was launched in the U.K. by mobile phone service provider Vodafone with the endorsement of Falklands War hero Simon Weston, and the movement reached critical mass in the wake of the July 7, 2005 terrorist bombings in London. The idea is now beginning to catch on in other countries, including the U.S.A,” quoting Urban Legends.

B. “NUCLEAR POWER GETS BOOST FROM CANDIDATES” Judy Pasternak of The Los Angeles Times writes: "On the brink of a nuclear power resurgence in America, the once-vilified industry is buoyed by a slate of presidential candidates who seem ready to embrace - or at least consider - a nuclear energy future,’" quoting Truthout [Ed. Note: are they nuts? Let’s see, are they going to bury the nuclear waste on some fault line or next to a pristine river or in a mountain near Las Vegas?].

C. TREES ABSORBING LESS CO2 AS WORLD WARMS, STUDY FINDS” “The ability of forests to soak up man-made carbon dioxide is weakening, according to an analysis of two decades of data from more than 30 sites in the frozen north. The finding published today is crucial, because it means that more of the CO2 we release will end up affecting the climate in the atmosphere rather than being safely locked away in trees or soil,” quoting UK’s Guardian.

D. “WARMING AUTUMNS MAY HINDER PLANT’S CLIMATE-COOLING ROLE” “As Earth warms and seasons shift, plants and soil may become less efficient at keeping the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere, a new study suggests,” quoting National Geographic.

E. “IN GREENLAND, ICE AND INSTABILITY” “Andrew C. Revkin of The New York Times reports: ‘The ancient frozen dome cloaking Greenland is so vast that pilots have crashed into what they thought was a cloud bank spanning the horizon. Flying over it, you can scarcely imagine that this ice could erode fast enough to dangerously raise sea levels any time soon,’" quoting Truthout.

12. ACTOR GARY SINISE AND HIS OPERATION “IRAQI CHILDREN” “Operation Iraqi Children is a grass-roots program founded in early 2004 by actor Gary Sinise (Forrest Gump, Apollo 13,/CSI: NY) and author Laura Hillenbrand (Seabiscuit: An American Legend). Sinise and Hillenbrand created OIC to give concerned Americans a way to reach out to war-stricken Iraqi children and support American troops in their efforts to assist them. Since its inception, OIC has delivered to Iraq nearly 200,000 school supply kits, along with more than half a million toys and thousands of Arabic-language books, shoes, blankets, backpacks and sets of sports equipment, all of which have been distributed to Iraqi children by our troops. While our focus remains on Iraq, in recent months, OIC has extended its reach, sending shipments of school supplies to Afghanistan and the east African nation of Djibouti, where American troops are distributing them to children in need,” quoting their website.

| KORNER'S KORNER FOR WEEK OF JANAURY 7, 2008

The Olympian gave us a fine glimpse into the history of New Years Day.

1. “WHAT IS THE STORY OF STUFF?” “From its extraction through sale, use and disposal, all the stuff in our lives affects communities at home and abroad, yet most of this is hidden from view. The Story of Stuff is a 20-minute, fast-paced, fact-filled look at the underside of our production and consumption patterns. The Story of Stuff exposes the connections between a huge number of environmental and social issues, and calls us together to create a more sustainable and just world. It'll teach you something, it'll make you laugh, and it just may change the way you look at all the stuff in your life forever,” quoting the Story of Stuff.

2. “MICROWAVED TIRES: FUEL OF THE FUTURE?” “Frank Pringle believes he can wrest energy from the process. His theory is gaining mileage: The Energy Dept. and two magazines are taking notice.... Last week, Dinesh Agrawal, director of Pennsylvania State University's Microwave Processing and Engineering Center, signed a contract with Pringle's company, Global Resource Corp. of West Berlin, N.J., to help him get funding and develop large-scale applications," quoting this Philadelphia Inquirer story of December 3, 2007.

3. PATGONIA FOUNDER PRESENTS PHILOSOPHY FOR “NEW STYLE OF RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS” "Like the carefully engineered dies which created his company's first products--steel pitons and carabiners which climbing enthusiasts would recognize as primitive forerunners of today's sleeker gear--Yvon Chouinard is if nothing else an original. How many other shy French-Canadian boys become surf-and-climbing bums, then blacksmiths forging their own play tools, and eventually founders of world-renowned sports equipment and apparel companies like Patagonia? How many other heads of multi-million dollar enterprises open their memoirs by stating bluntly, 'The Lee Iacoccas, Donald Trumps, and Jack Welches of the business world are heroes to no one except other businessmen with similar values. I wanted to be a fur trapper when I grew up.' The proverbial mold from which Chouinard was cast got broken. In Let My People Go Surfing: The Education of a Reluctant Businessman, readers get a fascinating look inside the history and philosophy of both Patagonia and its irascible, opinionated founder," quoting Amazon.com.

4. INTRODUCING ZERO EMISSIONS RESEARCH & INITIATIVES “Zero Emissions Research & Initiatives (ZERI) is a global network of creative minds seeking solutions to world challenges. The common vision shared by the members of the ZERI family is to view waste as resource and seek solutions using nature's design principles as inspiration.”

5. DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE WORLD CONSERVATION UNION?” “The World Conservation Union is the world’s largest and most important conservation network. The Union brings together 83 States, 110 government agencies, more than 800 non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and some 10,000 scientists and experts from 181 countries in a unique worldwide partnership.
The Union’s mission is to influence, encourage and assist societies throughout the world to conserve the integrity and diversity of nature and to ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable.”

6. INTRODUCING BIOMIMICRY “Biomimicry is a new discipline that studies nature’s best ideas and then imitates these designs and processes to solve human problems.
link here
“The Biomimicry Guild is the only innovation company in the world to use a deep knowledge of biological adaptations to help designers, engineers, architects, and business leaders solve design and engineering challenges.”

7. NEW BOOK: “SEEDS OF DESTRUCTION: THE HIDDEN AGENDA OF GENETIC MANIPULATION” “This skillfully researched book focuses on how a small socio-political American elite seeks to establish control over the very basis of human survival: the provision of our daily bread. “Control the food and you control the people.
This is no ordinary book about the perils of GMO. Engdahl takes the reader inside the corridors of power, into the backrooms of the science labs, behind closed doors in the corporate boardrooms... Engdahl's carefully argued critique goes far beyond the familiar controversies surrounding the practice of genetic modification as a scientific technique. The book is an eye-opener, a must-read for all those committed to the causes of social justice and World peace,” quoting Global Research.

And, this review: “What is so frightening about Engdahl's vision of the world is that it is so real. In this new age of free markets, everything science, commerce, agriculture and even seeds have become weapons in the hands of a few global corporation barons and their political fellow travelers. --Dr. Arpad Pusztai, biochemist, formerly of the Rowett Research Institute, Scotland,” in Amazon.com.

8. INTRODUCING THE NON-GMO PROJECT “The Non-GMO Project is a non-profit organization, created by leaders representing all sectors of the organic and natural products industry in the U.S. and Canada, to develop and uphold a standardized definition of “non-GMO” for organic and natural products that are produced without genetic engineering or recombinant DNA technologies.”

9. WOMEN PLAYING A GREATER ROLE IN FARMING” “John Hartzell, The Associated Press, writes: ‘The public face of women in agriculture n Wisconsin for 60 years has been Alice in Dairyland, a young woman selected annually to promote the state's farm products. But because of old barriers coming down, men doing other jobs, and mechanical advances, women like Grezenski are more actively involved,’" quoting Truthout.

10. “2007 A YEAR OF WEATHER RECORDS IN US” “Seth Borenstein of The Associated Press says, "When the calendar turned to 2007, the heat went on and the weather just got weirder. January was the warmest first month on record worldwide - 1.53 degrees above normal. It was the first time since record-keeping began in 1880 that the globe's average temperature has been so far above the norm for any month of the year,” quoting Truthout.

11. “LOOKING AT AMERICA” AS WE ENTER 2008 The New York Times editorial of Dec. 31, 2006 had a very poignant view: "There are too many moments these days when we cannot recognize our country. Sunday [Dec. 30, 2006] was one of them, as we read the account in The Times of how men in some of the most trusted posts in the nation plotted to cover up the torture of prisoners by Central Intelligence Agency interrogators by destroying videotapes of their sickening behavior. It was impossible to see the founding principles of the greatest democracy in the contempt these men and their bosses showed for the Constitution, the rule of law and human decency."

12. WILL ELECTION 2008 BE STOLEN AGAIN? A. “WILL THE 2008 ELECTIONS BE FREE AND FAIR?” “How safe is your right to vote? Former Justice Department official and voting rights lawyer David Becker, who worked under both President Bush and President Clinton, alleges a systematic effort to deny the vote to hundreds of thousands, even millions of people. In a revealing interview with NOW's David Brancaccio, Becker openly worries that the 2008 election will not be free and fair. And is our own government part of the solution, or part of the problem? Check out the Friday, November 30, complete NOW report free,” quoting PBS’s NOW.

B. OHIO SECRETARY OF STATE SAYS VOTING MACHINES EASILY CORRUPTED “Ohio's secretary of state says all of the state's voting machines should be replaced because the five systems in use can be easily corrupted.
‘It was worse than I anticipated,’ Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner said of a report on the voting systems. ‘I had hoped that perhaps one system would test superior to the others,’” quoting UPI. [Ed. Note: This is the same State that gave George W. Bush his stolen victory in 2004. Florida’s fraudulent elections system stole the election for him in 2000.]
