The final fix is in for Americans because in 1½ years, indeed 6 months before the Bushes bid the White House adieu, the U. S. Constitution will only be something written in a book.
“Any hope we may have of keeping government, industry, and criminals out of our personal business is scheduled to vanish completely in 18 months, privacy advocates say. That’s when the federal government’s Real ID Act is to be fully in place, effectively setting up a national identification program by requiring states to adopt strict new high-tech standards for driver’s licenses and ID cards if they are to be accepted by federal authorities at places ranging from airports to U.S. courthouses,” quoting MSNBC. 2. MORE ON RED WINE & CHOCOLATE
A. "RED WINE MAY PREVENT COLON CANCER"
"More than three glasses of red wine a week may reduce the risk for significant colorectal neoplasia, or colon cancer, says a U.S. study. Dr. Joseph C. Anderson and his colleagues at Stony Brook University in New York compared the drinking habits of 360 red and white wine drinkers with similar lifestyles to examine the prevalence of colorectal neoplasia and found that red wine dramatically reduced the risk of colorectal neoplasia by 68 percent -- but white wine did not. The researchers suspect the high content of the compound resveratrol in red wine plays a key role. Resveratrol is an anti-fungal chemical that occurs naturally under the skin of red wine grapes...The findings are being presented at the 71st Annual Scientific Meeting of the American College of Gastroenterology in Las Vegas [Monday, Oct. 23].
link here B. CHOCOLATE TURNS ON BRAIN AREAS -- INVOLVED IN DRUG ADDICTION
"A new study of people who crave chocolate shows that eating chocolate, or even just looking at a picture of it, turns on pleasure centers in the brains of cravers far more than in people who don't crave the confection. Viewing pictures of chocolate also activates an area of the brain known to be involved in drug addiction. The study, by Ciara McCabe and Edmund Rolls of Oxford University in England, was one of more than 14,000 presentations slated for the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience this week [Oct. 16]. The meeting draws more than 35,000 brain scientists and doctors each year, making it one of the world's largest scientific gatherings," quoting the St. Louis Dispatch.

3. “ANTARCTIC ICE COLLAPSE LINKED TO GREENHOUSE GASES”
“Scientists said on Monday [Oct. 16] that they had found the first direct evidence linking the collapse of an ice shelf in Antarctica to global warming widely blamed on human activities. Shifts in winds whipping around the southern Ocean, tied to human emissions of greenhouse gases, had warmed the Antarctic peninsula jutting up toward South America and contributed to the break-up of the Larsen B ice shelf in 2002, they said. ‘This is the first time that anyone has been able to demonstrate a physical process directly linking the break-up of the Larsen Ice Shelf to human activity,’ said Gareth Marshall, lead author of the study at the British Antarctic Survey. The chunk that collapsed into the Weddell Sea in 2002 was 3,250 sq kms (1,255 sq miles), bigger than Luxembourg or the U.S. state of Rhode Island,” quoting Reuters. link here
And: “Nothing else quite like it has happened at any time in the past 10,000 years. In just over a month an entire Antarctic ice shelf, bigger than a small country, disintegrated and disappeared, altering world atlases for ever,” quoting UK’s Independent.

B. OZONE HOLE SETS RECORD
“The so-called "hole" in the earth's protective ozone layer is at a new record — 10.6 million square miles of sky around the South Pole — even though most nations agreed back in 1987 to phase out the chemicals that cause it. The number was reported today [Oct. 19] by U.S. government scientists [Paul A. Newman, a senior research scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md], who said protecting the ozone layer was still clearly the right thing to do, but that it's taking longer than originally expected for the ozone layer to heal. A 10.6 million mile gap in it is about the size of North America,” quoting ABC News.

4. “SCIENTISTS CREATE SUPER-HEAVY ELEMENT”
“Revisiting one of physics' most embarrassing cases of scientific misconduct, researchers from Russia and the United States announced Monday [Oct. 16] that they have created a new super-heavy element, atomic number 118. Scientists said they smashed together calcium with the manmade element Californium to make an atom with 118 protons in its nucleus. The new element lasted for just one millisecond, but it was the heaviest element ever made and the first manmade inert gas - the atomic family that includes helium, neon and radon. If confirmed, the still-unnamed element would be placed beneath radon on the periodic table of elements, said Ken Moody of the Lawrence Livermore National Lab in California, which was joined on the project by Russia's Joint Institute of Nuclear Research. The findings were published in the journal Physical Review C. The same research team has created four other elements,” quoting the AP.

5. IMPLANTED CHIPS NOW IN USE AS MEDICAL ACCESSORY - YIKES!
"It's a technology that's already being used on millions of pets in America. Now, micro chips are being implanted in human beings as well and this week in Las Vegas, the procedure is being performed on dozens of people attending a medical convention. The implants are inserted into the arm. The tiny computer chips can help doctors get important medical information. The chips are incredibly small and are implanted just under the skin...In the case of humans, the chips provide a link to a computer database that gives doctors instant access to a patient's complete medical history...One idea for the chips is to implant them in US Military personnel so that soldiers injured in the field can be quickly and accurately identified. According to the makers of the chip, ten hospitals and emergency rooms in Las Vegas have agreed to begin using the devices that scan for the implants," quoting KVBC-TV in Las Vegas. [Ed. Note: Oh Brother! The chipmaker knows how to get the public to slowly accept this -- like putting the human in water and slowly turn up the heat to a boil telling them all is fine, while they slowly cook. All should read George Orwell's 1984, and soon.]

6. SLEEP DEPRIVATION MAY LEAD HIPPOCAMPUS TO INTERRUPT MEMORY
“Going a night without sleep may cause your hippocampus to go on strike. A new study has caught this crucial memory-encoding brain region slacking off in college students the day after they've pulled an all-nighter. The study is one of the first to investigate how sleep deprivation interferes with memory mechanisms in the human brain,” quoting Science Now.

7. STUDY: VEGETABLES MAY KEEP BRAINS YOUNG
“New research on vegetables and aging gives mothers another reason to say, "I told you so." It found that eating vegetables appears to help keep the brain young and may slow the mental decline sometimes associated with growing old. On measures of mental sharpness, older people who ate more than two servings of vegetables daily appeared about five years younger at the end of the six-year study than those who ate few or no vegetables. The research in almost 2,000 Chicago-area men and women doesn't prove that vegetables reduce mental decline, but it adds to mounting evidence pointing in that direction. The findings also echo previous research in women only,” quoting the AP.

8. MALE CELLPHONE USERS BEWARE - YOU HAVE LOWER SPERM COUNTS
“Some men see them as a status symbol, but research has found mobile phones could be destroying that other badge of masculinity - fertility. Men who spent hours talking on their mobile phone had significantly lower sperm counts than usual, according to a study presented at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine conference. Ashok Agarwal, from the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio in the US, examined 364 male fertility patients and found heavy mobile phone use led to men producing fewer and poorer-quality sperm…‘The effect of mobile phones on sperm may be due to the electromagnetic radiation the devices emit or to the heat they generate,’ Dr Agarwal said yesterday [Oct. 24],” quoting The Australian.

9. “WAVES: THE NEXT WAVE IN CLEAN GREEN POWER”
“Oregon's spectacular coastline could become the United States' center for wave energy development in coming years, with plans underway to install power buoys in locations with enough potential to meet the state's future energy needs. Electrical engineers at Oregon State University are developing electricity-generating buoys they believe will be a key component for clean, green wave power. Their objective is to convert the Pacific Ocean's heavy rolling swell into a renewable energy resource., (sic) relying on buoys to harness the near constant rise and fall of waves to produce electricity. "Waves generate energy through motion," said Dr. Annette von Jouanne, an electrical engineering professor at Oregon State University (OSU). The OSU project is part of a renewed global effort to investigate wave and tidal power as a potential source of alternative energy, she noted,” quoting Inter Press Service.

"A public utility district, an Indian tribe and a renewable energy company have struck a deal that could turn the power of the ocean’s waves into electricity for a rural community in Washington state,"
quoting the American Public Power Assn.

10. “HOME DEPOT SELLING SOLAR TO MAINSTREAM AMERICA”
“The Home Depot has teamed up with BP Solar to provide solar installation service to customers… California is also getting ready to make solar roofs mainstream. Renewable Energy Access reports: ‘When the clock strikes midnight on January 1, 2007, SB 1, California's new state law that provides $3.2 billion in funding to build a million solar roofs over the next ten years, will officially take effect. But in order for SB 1 to succeed -- and the solar industry as a whole to continue to expand -- it's time to start marketing solar power as an accessible, aesthetically pleasing, and cost-effective product to the average consumer, according to California Senator Kevin Murray,’” quoting Treehugger.

11. OLYMPIA MAN IDENTIFIED AFTER MISSING FOR 6 WEEKS - AMNESIA
"Jeff Ingram, an Olympia man missing for six weeks while experiencing amnesia, has been reunited with his past. Ingram, 40, arrived at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport from Denver early Monday [Oct. 23] where he was reunited with his fiancee, Penny Hansen, Hansen's spokeswoman Marilyn Meehan said. Doctors in Denver had confirmed that Ingram experienced a case of amnesia, a disorder that results in memory loss, Denver police said over the weekend. Ingram, who took the plane trip accompanied by a Denver Police Department employee, still did not remember his life before he woke up on the sidewalk in Denver on Sept. 10, not knowing who he was and how he got there, Meehan said," quoting The Olympian.

12. CONVERSATIONS WITH GOD – THE MOVIE - OPENS IN WASHNGTON
“Conversations With God – The movie opened in select theaters on October 27. Western Washington locales include Bellingham and Seattle. [Ed. Note: This writer & his wife drove to Seattle to be in audience for the inaugural day opening October 27th. Very few were in the theater. This is a very revealing story about America's attitudes towards the homesless & adrift, in addition to Walsch's story of how he came tthrough that to write the books. This film will make most squirm in their seats, yet is a story that must be told!].

This 1-minute video shows the illusion of "beauty" in our modern society, as discussed here recently.

1. "HUMAN BRAINS ARE 'WIRED TO CONNECT'"
"The emerging field of social neuroscience is based on the idea that human brains are ‘wired to connect.' …That is precisely the point that science writer Daniel Goleman makes in his new book, "Social Intelligence: The New Science of Human Relationships." As Goleman contends, human brains are "wired to connect," and to a much greater extent than we ever realized. It's not just that laughter and bad moods are "contagious." Empathizing with a friend, whether in grief or elation, can activate the very same circuits in our own brains as in our companion's. Eleven years ago, when Goleman published his best seller "Emotional Intelligence," no one understood on a neuronal level how social interactions actually worked—how the brain processed rejection, for example, or experienced loneliness. Now, thanks to brain imaging and other advanced technologies, scientists from many disciplines are joining forces to decode what Goleman dubs our "neural WiFi." Their findings could have profound implications for the future," quoting Newsweek.
link here The New York Times take on this story:
“Research on the link between relationships and physical health has established that people with rich personal networks — who are married, have close family and friends, are active in social and religious groups — recover more quickly from disease and live longer. But now the emerging field of social neuroscience, the study of how people’s brains entrain as they interact, adds a missing piece to that data. The most significant finding was the discovery of “mirror neurons,” a widely dispersed class of brain cells that operate like neural WiFi. Mirror neurons track the emotional flow, movement and even intentions of the person we are with, and replicate this sensed state in our own brain by stirring in our brain the same areas active in the other person.”

2. WHAT KK READERS ALREADY KNOW ABOUT RED WINE
"Red wine might work to protect the brain from damage after a stroke, and drinking a couple of glasses a day might provide that protection ahead of time, U.S. researchers reported on Sunday [Oct. 15]. In an effort to better understand how red wine works, the scientists from Johns Hopkins University fed mice a moderate dose of a compound found in red grape skins and seeds before inducing strokelike damage. They discovered that the animals suffered less brain damage than similarly damaged mice who were not treated with the compound, which is called resveratrol," quoting Reuters.

3. “IS THERE ROOM FOR THE SOUL?”
US NEWS examines this issue in its cover story:
“New challenges to our most cherished beliefs about self and the human spirit…Overrated or underrated, consciousness is not being ignored these days. Indeed, during the past 20 years or so it has become the focus of an expanding intellectual industry involving the combined, but not always harmonious, efforts of neuroscientists, cognitive psychologists, artificial intelligence specialists, physicists, and philosophers. But what, exactly, has this effort accomplished? Has it brought us any closer to understanding how the physical brain is related to the thinking, experiencing, self-aware mind? Is the scientific study of consciousness approaching its own Copernican moment, when the fruits of experimental work yield a compelling, comprehensive theory?”
link here .
4. “DNA IS NOT DESTINY”
“’People used to think that once your epigenetic code was laid down in early development, that was it for life,’ says Moshe Szyf, a pharmacologist with a bustling lab at McGill University in Montreal. ‘But life is changing all the time, and the epigenetic code that controls your DNA is turning out to be the mechanism through which we change along with it. Epigenetics tells us that little things in life can have an effect of great magnitude.’ Szyf has been a pioneer in linking epigenetic changes to the development of diseases. He long ago championed the idea that epigenetic patterns can shift through life and that those changes are important in the establishment and spread of cancer,” quoting Discover Magazine. (registration required to view full article.).

5. "EXPERTS CREATE INVISIBILITY CLOAK"
"A US-British team of scientists has successfully tested a cloak of invisibility in the laboratory. The device mostly hid a small copper cylinder from microwaves in tests at Duke University, North Carolina. It works by deflecting the microwaves around the object and restoring them on the other side, as if they had passed through empty space," quoting the BBC. link here And this rpeort by MSNBC has a terrific graphic:
"Nonetheless, the cloaking of a cylinder from microwaves comes just five months after Schurig and colleagues published their theory that it should be possible. Their first success is reported in a paper in Friday’s issue [Oct. 20] of the journal Science.

6. “A $3 WATER PURIFIER THAT COULD SAVE LIVES”
“In very poor countries, the family that has to walk miles to fetch drinking water from a well or a stream may be the lucky one. In many villages, the water source is a filthy pond trod by animals and people, or a mud puddle out next to the yam field. As a result, about 6,000 people a day — most of them children — die from water-borne diseases. As a result, about 6,000 people a day — most of them children — die from water-borne diseases. Vestergaard Frandsen, a Danish textile company that supplies water filters to the Carter Center guinea worm eradication program and mosquito-killing plastic tarps to refugee camps, has come up with a new invention meant to render dangerous water drinkable. The invention is called Lifestraw, a plastic tube with seven filters: graduated meshes with holes as fine as 6 microns (a human hair is 50 to 100 microns), followed by resin impregnated with iodine and another of activated carbon. It can be worn around the neck and lasts a year. Lifestraw isn’t perfect, but it filters out at least 99.99 percent of many parasites and bacteria, the demons in most fatal cases of diarrhea,” quoting the New York Times.

7. “THE VEGETABLE-INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX”
“Soon after the news broke last month that nearly 200 Americans in 26 states had been sickened by eating packaged spinach contaminated with E. coli, I received a rather cold-blooded e-mail message from a friend in the food business. “I have instructed my broker to purchase a million shares of RadSafe,” he wrote, explaining that RadSafe is a leading manufacturer of food-irradiation technology. It turned out my friend was joking, but even so, his reasoning was impeccable. If bagged salad greens are vulnerable to bacterial contamination on such a scale, industry and government would very soon come looking for a technological fix; any day now, calls to irradiate the entire food supply will be on a great many official lips. That’s exactly what happened a few years ago when we learned that E. coli from cattle feces was winding up in American hamburgers. Rather than clean up the kill floor and the feedlot diet, some meat processors simply started nuking the meat — sterilizing the manure, in other words, rather than removing it from our food. Why? Because it’s easier to find a technological fix than to address the root cause of such a problem. This has always been the genius of industrial capitalism — to take its failings and turn them into exciting new business opportunities. We can also expect to hear calls for more regulation and inspection of the produce industry,” quoting the New York Times. [Ed. Note: Ho- hum. Yawn – what else is new? Corporate oligarchy!]

8. BUSINESSWEEK: THE ORGANIC MYTH
"Now companies from Wal-Mart to General Mills to Kellogg are wading into the organic game, attracted by fat margins that old-fashioned food purveyors can only dream of. What was once a cottage industry of family farms has become Big Business, with all that that implies, including pressure from Wall Street to scale up and boost profits. Hirshberg himself is under the gun because he has sold an 85% stake in Stonyfield to the French food giant Groupe Danone. To retain management control, he has to keep Stonyfield growing at double-digit rates. Yet faced with a supply crunch, he has drastically cut the percentage of organic products in his line. He also has scaled back annual sales growth, from almost 40% to 20%. 'They're all mad at me,' he says. As food companies scramble to find enough organically grown ingredients, they are inevitably forsaking the pastoral ethos that has defined the organic lifestyle. For some companies, it means keeping thousands of organic cows on industrial-scale feedlots. For others, the scarcity of organic ingredients means looking as far afield as China, Sierra Leone, and Brazil -- places where standards may be hard to enforce, workers' wages and living conditions are a worry, and, say critics, increased farmland sometimes comes at a cost to the environment," quoting BusinessWeek in this cover story. [Ed. Note: Even KK readers will remember the hallmarking of Stonyfield's success a few weeks ago.] link here .
9. NEWS OF PHYSICIST STEPHEN HAWKINGS
"Acclaimed British physicist Stephen Hawking will reportedly trade in scientific journals for the big screen by starring in a movie. The film, "Beyond the Horizon," aims to explain some of the complicated theories backed by Hawking and his fellow physicists, including the idea that space has up to 11 dimensions and the cause of the big bang," quoting AFP.
link here And:
"UC Berkeley is shipping copies of physicist Stephen Hawking's latest book on the cosmos to nearly 4,000 of its new freshmen and challenging the frosh to read it over the winter break as a mind-stretching exercise. The task -- an expectation, though not an academic requirement -- also is a prelude to class-wide discussions culminating in Hawking's appearance on campus in March. The vacation reading assignment is part of a first-ever invitation to all 3,800 first-year students in the university's College of Letters and Science to step outside their disciplines and talk about big ideas that affect everybody," quoting the San Francusco Chronicle. link here .
10. "BIRD FLU AND YOU" [STORE FOOD!]
This story by Claudia Dreifus AARP Magazine November & December, 2006
"A leading virologist warns of a coming pandemic. How concerned should you be?" Virologist Robert G. Webster believes a flu mutation could produce a "national disaster." Some call him an alarmist. You be the judge." Mr. Webster is asked the following:
"Q. If H5N1 mutates, what could our readers do to protect themselves?
A. You mean if they can't get a vaccine? I'd say: If they have a house in the hills, then go to it - and stay there for three months. And have enough food there already so that you can stay as far away from your neighbors as possible.Q. So you are advocating that people stockpile food and medicine?
A. Absolutely. Most of us can afford to buy dry food for three months. One bottle of Clorox is enough to purify all the water you need out of the local river. [For more tips on protecting yourself in the event of a pandemic, see www.pandemicflu.gov ].
Q. Michael Leavitt, secretary of Health and Human Services, has warned that if avian flu hits, we shouldn't count on help from the federal government. Do you find that shocking?
A. I think that Leavitt is very responsible when he tells people to get their own houses in order. If this killer virus hits, the country's infrastructure will fall apart...." Write and ask AARP to put this important story on a link for all to see. link here .
11. "THE MESSAGE IN THE (PLASTIC) BOTTLE IS DIRE"
"Curtis Ebbesmeyer is the king of ocean trash. He loves to stroll beaches searching for the oddities that wash ashore -- the 10-foot-tall Yogi Bear, pieces of plastic from the 1940s, and bottles and caps galore...The material doesn't biodegrade but rather undergoes a slow process of "photodegradation" as the sun breaks it into smaller and smaller pieces. Pollutants -- such as PCBs and the pesticide DDT -- can be absorbed by plastics like a sponge sopping up water. The chemicals might become concentrated a millionfold compared with the surrounding water, researchers say. Plastic can also contain chemicals that mimic natural hormones, which, like birth control pills, can cause male fish and birds to exhibit female traits. The presence of microscopic plastic 'is just a new threat that has become visible and really looked at in the last five years, or 10 years,' Ebbesmeyer said." quoting the Seattle P-I.

12. MARILYN MONROE MURDER MYSTERY DETAILS EMERGE
[Ed. Note: On the heels of the JFK assassination documents revealed here in a new book, now comes another author that has done meticulous research to get documents relating to the murder of Marilyn Monroe. This writer has been interested in the truth coming out in this case for 2 reasons:
A. I was born on Marilyn Monroe's 28th birthday and she has therefore been on my mind.
B. I read a National Enquirer deathbed confession several years ago of the agent that says killed her. He stated he injected her in her rectum, hence the body being found in the fetal position and no entry found for the toxic cocktail found in her bloodstream. Have never seen this printed since. I found this believable.
Now, where does one find these new revelations? Not on NBC, CBS, ABC or CNN. No, in Readers Digest. HMMM! This writer read with fascination the details of this story and how government cover-ups have kept a lid on what everyone always knew - Ms. Monroe WAS murdered!]
"44 years after Marilyn Monroe's tragic death, just-released government documents raise new questions about what really happened," quoting Readers Digest. link here .

Dear Readers;
“America’s 300 millionth person will be here any day now. The Census Bureau has combined birth, death and immigration rates and expects him or her to arrive in mid-October,” quoting The New York Times in this fabulous editorial.

1. "IRAQ FOR SALE: AS NOT SEEN ON TV”
“Iraq for Sale, the latest documentary from Robert Greenwald, tells a depressingly familiar tale of corporate corruption and war-profiteering in Iraq. Focusing on companies like Halliburton, CACI International and Blackwater Security Consulting, it recites a litany of rapacity and exploitation that ought to have American citizens swarming Congress, demanding heads on pikes," quoting The Guardian UK. [Ed. Note: This is a hard-hitting film of truth. As an American taxpayer, I felt I got a punch in the stomach upon seeing this movie.]

2. EXPERTS WEIGH IN ON HOW TO HELP OUR CHILDREN
A. PLAYTIME IMPORTANT IN CHILDREN’S DEVELOPMENT
“Whether it's romping on the playground, chasing butterflies or building with blocks, children need spontaneous play for healthy development, according to the report. Child-rearing expert Dr. Berry Brazelton said he hoped parents will get the message that overscheduled kids 'are missing the chance they have to dream, to fantasize, to make their own world work the way they want it,'" quoting the New York Daily News.
link here B. EXPERT’S TIP FOR SMARTER CHILD – AWAKE THEM WITH BLUE LIGHT
“Helping your child perform better in school could be as easy as installing a blue light in their room or encouraging them to chew more gum, according to a new book. Dr. Frank Lawlis, author of "The I.Q. Answer," says how you wake your child up each day could be the difference between success and failure. Waking them up with a blue light could increase your child's brain power. ‘If you want to wake up your child in a very positive and energetic way, probably the best way to do that is just by exposing them to a blue light,' Lawlis said. 'If the eyes are exposed to this blue light, there is a stimulation in part of the brain and this happens even if your eyes are closed,’” quoting ABC TV.

3. “NATURE’S MIND: THE QUANTUM HOLOGRAM”
“This paper presents a hypothesis for integrating into the scientific framework phenomena of consciousness which frequently have been considered beyond scientific description. Intuition, telepathy, clairvoyance and many similar information phenomena seem to be easily explained by means of the nonlocal quantum hologram. It is further postulated that from the point of view of evolution, quantum nonlocality is the basis from which self-organizing cosmological processes have produced the common phenomenon of perception in living organisms. Keywords: quantum hologram, perception, telepathy, nonlocal, intuition,” quoting Edgar Mitchell, Sc.D.

4. STUDIES SHAKING THE FABRIC OF REALITY
A. “THE UNIVERSE AS A HOLOGRAM”
“In 1982 a remarkable event took place. At the University of Paris a research team led by physicist Alain Aspect performed what may turn out to be one of the most important experiments of the 20th century. You did not hear about it on the evening news. In fact, unless you are in the habit of reading scientific journals you probably have never even heard Aspect's name, though there are some who believe his discovery may change the face of science. Is the Universe a Hologram?
Does Objective Reality Exist, or is the Universe a Phantasm?
Aspect and his team discovered that under certain circumstances subatomic particles such as electrons are able to instantaneously communicate with each other regardless of the distance separating them. It doesn't matter whether they are 10 feet or 10 billion miles apart. Somehow each particle always seems to know what the other is doing...
University of London physicist David Bohm, for example, believes Aspect's findings imply that objective reality does not exist, that despite its apparent solidity the universe is at heart a phantasm, a gigantic and splendidly detailed hologram. To understand why Bohm makes this startling assertion, one must first understand a little about holograms. “People with a ‘sensitive’ personality type are far more likely to report apparitional experience, according to a paper published in the peer reviewed Journal of the Society for Psychical Research. Such persons commonly report longstanding allergies, chronic pain and fatigue, depression, migraine headaches, or sensitivity to light, sound, and smell. These individuals are also more likely to report that immediate family members suffered from the same conditions. The survey raises the question of whether a ‘neurobiology of sensitivity’ could underlie reports of apparitional experience occurring across societies and throughout history,” quoting Cogprints.

5. ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTERS IN THE MAKING BEFORE OUR EYES
A. “SCIENCE IGNORED, AGAIN”
“The Bush administration loves to talk about the virtues of "sound science," by which it usually means science that buttresses its own political agenda. But when some truly independent science comes along to threaten that agenda, the administration often ignores or minimizes it. The latest example involves the Environmental Protection Agency's decision to reject the recommendations of experts inside and outside the government who had urged a significant tightening of federal standards regulating the amount of soot in the air. At issue were so-called fine particles, tiny specks of soot that are less than one-thirtieth the diameter of a human hair. They penetrate deep into the lungs and circulatory system and have been implicated in tens of thousands of deaths annually from both respiratory and coronary disease,” quoting the New York Times.
link here B. “MULCH MADNESS”
“TOWERING cypress once covered much of southern Louisiana — 1,000-year-old trees darkened ancient, moss-laden, water-saturated forests. These wetlands not only gave the bayou its flavor, its culture and its mystery, they also acted as critical natural “speed bumps” for major storms…Yet at a time when the nation should be investing billions to restore the Gulf Coast’s wetlands for protection against future storms, these cypress swamps continue to face many challenges, including development, saltwater flowing in and rising water levels. The most dangerous threat of all, however, may be garden mulch — the stuff that gardeners usually use to protect their plants. As they exhaust the cypress forests along Florida’s coast, mulch companies are moving into Louisiana with shady operators among them grinding up entire cypress forests, 70 percent to 80 percent of which will never grow back. This is hurricane protection lost forever — habitat and flood control converted to quick cash, one bag of mulch at a time,” quoting the New York Times.

6. NEW WAY OF GENERATING WATER FROM ATMOSPHERE
“The Atmospheric Water Generator is a sophisticated machine designed to create pure, filtered drinking water from the moisture in the air. These machines are approximately the size of a household water cooler and will create up to eight gallons of drinking water a day. Our atmospheric water generators also produce up to 200,000 liters / day. The Larger units provide both drinking water and irrigation water for greenhouse horticulture systems. A 25% return on investment on all product lines is feasible,” quoting this Canadian company’s website Wataire Industries Inc. link here .
7. "THE ASCENT OF WIND POWER”
“Wind power may still have an image as something of a plaything of environmentalists more concerned with clean energy than saving money. But it is quickly emerging as a serious alternative not just in affluent areas of the world but in fast-growing countries like India and China that are avidly seeking new energy sources,” quoting the New York Times.

8. SOLAR ENERGY PRODUCTION PANELS COMING DOWN IN PRICE
“Nanosolar is on track to make solar electricity: • cost-efficient for ubiquitous deployment • mass-produced on a global scale • available in many versatile forms. Nanosolar has developed proprietary technology that makes it possible to simply roll-print solar cells that require only 1/100th as thick an absorber as a silicon-wafer cell (yet deliver similar performance and durability). Our technology dramatically lowers the process cost and complexity involved in the production of thin-film solar cells and makes it possible to scale production very rapidly. The result sets the standard for the technology and products that make it possible to put A Solar Panel on Every Building™,” quoting Nansolar.

9. “SEDUCED BY SNACKS? NO, NOT YOU”
“When it comes to the slippery issues of snacking and portion control, no one thinks he or she is the schmo who digs deep into the snack bowl without thinking, or orders dessert just because a restaurant plays a certain kind of music. “To a person, people will swear they aren’t influenced by the size of a package or how much variety there is on a buffet or the fancy name on a can of beans, but they are,” Dr. Wansink said. “Every time.” He has the data to prove it. Dr. Wansink, who holds a doctorate in marketing from Stanford University and directs the Cornell University Food and Brand Lab, probably knows more about why we put things in our mouths than anybody else. His experiments examine the cues that make us eat the way we do,” quoting the New York Times.

10. WANT TO BLOW YOUR MIND? READ THIS ABOUT 9/11
“The “hologram theory” was developed by Webfairy (Rosalee Grable) in order to explain the strange entry mode of the visible flying craft at south tower through the steel-column walls. The hologram theory says that south tower (WTC2) was not hit by a large Boeing 767-200 (flight UA175) but by a small USAF cruise missile or drone with a large holographic cloak around it that made it look like a flight UA175, i.e. a flying deception.
The hologram theory has been attacked and ridiculed like no other theory relating to 9-11. In fact, however, it is based on stringent science, on reports from the military community and on careful analysis of the photos and mainstream media news videos of the alleged “plane” crash into south tower and of at least 11 military stealth crafts close by the south tower,” quoting Dr. Stefan G. E. Grossmann.

11. FINALLY -- SOMEONE STANDS UP TO THE FASHION INDUSTRY'S "THIN IS IN" CAMPAIGN
"Clothing catalogs are filling my mailbox. After glancing through them, I am beginning to think that something is dreadfully wrong with me. I do not look like the models. I have hips and a stomach! Well, they cannot trick me into believing that my body is wrong when in fact, they are wrong...Sometimes it seems like the fashion industry wants control of my body and mind. They want me anxious and uncertain... Well, I am not swallowing their bite on fashion. The fashion industry is oblivious to individual variation in body type, weight or preferences...After writing this article, I am writing several clothing catalogs to ask them to advertise clothes on models that are my size. If parts of their ads are demeaning to women or me, I will let them know. Until then, I will not buy their clothes. I will not change my body to meet their standards. I like my body as it is, flaws and all. I encourage you to do the same. It feels good," quoting Laurie Schaetzel-Hill in The Olympian. link here .
12. WASHINGTON STATE HAS CLEAN ENERGY INITIATIVE ON BALLOT
“This year, you have a unique opportunity to make a difference and help stop global warming. Initiative 937 will require Washington state utilities to increase their use of renewable energy instead of increasing the production of polluting global warming gases. Initiative 937, Washington’s Clean Energy Initiative, is our chance to determine our energy future. As Washington’s demand for energy grows, we have the opportunity to get our electricity from cleaner, cheaper renewable energy like wind and solar power – produced right here in the Northwest!” quoting Washingtonians for Clean Energy.

1. GLOBAL GREEN INTERNATIONAL
“Green Cross International (GCI) was founded by Mikhail Gorbachev in 1993, as prompted by the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro and Agenda 21. GCI is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland…The mission of GCI is to create a sustainable future by cultivating harmonious relationships between humans and the environment. GCI concentrates its efforts on five main programs to promote a significant change in human values toward greater respect for Earth's community of life in all its diversity. The programs, stemming from the initiatives of 21 National Organizations, seek to combine global thinking and local action through the vehicle of international programs tailored to local needs,” quoting their website. Global Green’s USA headquarters is in Santa Monica, Ca.

3. SPEAKING OF WOMEN – WA. GOV. GREGOIRE CO-SPONSORS EFFORT
“Whether we're fishing for salmon, chasing our kids around tide pools or listening to orcas, we should all experience the glory of the waters on our coast. Gov. Chris Gregoire and her fellow West Coast governors have taken a bold step in that direction by launching a concerted effort to protect the health of the ocean. This is a big move, and not just because it involved Govs. Gregoire, Ted Kulongoski of Oregon and Arnold Schwarzenegger of California. It's big because the ocean is big, with a lot of different people in different places making different decisions. Now we're going to start making the big, hard decisions together and treating our ocean the way scientists are saying we should, as a single, vast, interconnected web of life…The West Coast Governors' Agreement on Ocean Health is getting us firmly on the road to improvement, creating more collaboration among local, state, tribal and federal governments,” quoting the Seattle P-I.

4. EXOTIC QUANTUM STATE MAKES ROOM-TEMPERATURE DEBUT
“An exotic quantum state that had previously appeared only under conditions of astonishing cold has made its room-temperature debut, reports an international team of scientists. In related experiments, other researchers have produced a similar state in different, still-chilly materials but claim that their experiments will lead to room-temperature versions as well. The new findings, unveiled in independent reports in the Sept. 28 Nature, reveal a bizarre new branch of an already exotic family of quantum states of matter known as Bose-Einstein condensates,” quoting Science News. link here .
5. NOBEL PHYSICS PRIZE AWARDED FOR "COSMIC RIPPLES"
"The discovery by John Mather and George Smoot of "cosmic ripples," which won them the Nobel Prize in physics on Tuesday [Oct. 3], was lauded in 1992 by cosmologist Stephen Hawking as "the greatest discovery of the century, if not of all time." While most physicists do not go that far, they are universal in their praise of the experiment, in which the pair and their team designed a satellite and used it to find proof of the Big Bang theory of the universe's origins. They found faint variations in microwave radiation that dated back to just 300,000 years after the fiery birth of the universe. These ripples in the microwave radiation, they said, were the primordial framework on which the galaxies, stars and other stuff of the universe took shape. It explained why the universe is lumpy and not a smooth sheet of matter and energy," quoting Reuters. link here .
6. "STUDY: TV, GAMING HURT SCHOOL PERFORMANCE"
"Parents now have science to back them up when they say, "Turn off the TV. It's a school night."
Middle school students who watch TV or play video games during the week do worse in school, a new study finds, but weekend viewing and gaming doesn't affect school performance much. 'On weekdays, the more they watched, the worse they did,' said study co-author Dr. Iman Sharif of Children's Hospital at Montefiore in the Bronx. 'They could watch a lot on weekends and it didn't seem to correlate with doing worse in school.' Children whose parents allowed them to watch R-rated movies also did worse in class, and for boys, that effect was especially strong. The findings are based on a survey of 4,500 students in 15 New Hampshire and Vermont middle schools. The study appears in the October issue of Pediatrics. Weekend viewing and gaming slightly hurt school performance, but only when the students spent more than four hours each day at it over the weekend," quoting the AP. link here .
7. EXCELLENT POINT HERE ON SPINACH SCARE
“When in Mexico, the saying goes, don't drink the water. You shouldn't eat the spinach either because it could be contaminated with the E. coli strain that has sickened close to 200 people in the United States and killed at least one, likely more. The problem is our food production system is so complex that most of us cannot be certain where our food comes from. Even the U.S. government, after two weeks on the case of the spinach E. coli outbreak, has narrowed the source to, oh, somewhere in central California...There are two ways for the U.S. government to greatly minimize the risk of an E. coli outbreak: start supporting local farming and stop mass-producing cattle, the true source of E. coli. Neither will happen soon, however, because it infringes on the American pursuit of cheap, crappy food,” quoting Live Science. [Ed. Note: Growing your own food has never been more important, and wise.]

8. “...ONE-THIRD OF THE SOLAR SYSTEMS...MIGHT CONTAIN TERRESTRIAL PLANETS”
“If life on Earth did indeed spring forth within our vast oceans, then it also might be teeming on thousands of other worlds. New models suggest that as many as one-third of the solar systems in the galactic neighborhood might contain terrestrial planets with oceans of water that could harbor life. The new findings counter previous hypotheses on planetary formation, which have claimed that few solar systems contain Earth-like worlds. Part of the problem has to do with so-called hot Jupiters. These gas giants, which orbit closer to their parent stars than Mercury does to the sun, form relatively quickly from the gas in the protoplanetary disk. Astronomers assumed that as these hot Jupiters plow through disk material, they "vacuum up" a lot of the dust and rock or eject it from the solar system. That would leave little material left with which to make water-logged planets. But "the new models indicate these early ideas were probably wrong," says planetary scientist Sean Raymond of the University of Colorado, Boulder. Reporting in today's issue of Science, Raymond and colleagues say they ran simulations lasting more than 8 months each on more than a dozen desktop computers,” quoting Science Now. 9. “ENERGY FOR A COOL PLANET”
“The most pressing technological problem facing the world is uncoupling the provision of energy from the production of carbon dioxide. Developed countries no longer need to increase their energy use in order to increase the size of their economies, but developing countries do. And yet to add more carbon dioxide to the Earth's atmosphere is to increase inexorably the chances of climatic chaos. To highlight this issue Nature is assembling a suite of feature articles and associated material which will outline the promises and, where necessary, the pitfalls of new energy technologies. From mainstream possibilities like the expansion of nuclear power to more offbeat subjects such as microbial fuel cells and schemes for combining biofuel with fertiliser manufacture, this regularly updated Nature web focus will provide a comprehensive overview of the energy landscape,” quoting Nature.com.

11. SEATTLE’S WTO RIOTS TO BE A MOVIE
“Former Mayor Paul Schell just hopes the movie re-enacting one of the worst chapters of his political life tells "the whole story about the 21st-century Boston Tea Party."… Written and directed by Theron's boyfriend, Irish actor Stuart Townsend, "Battle in Seattle" is scheduled to start shooting next month [October] — in Vancouver, B.C, where Theron was spotted last weekend nibbling on sushi in a trendy restaurant…. In 1999, tens of thousands of activists halted the WTO's first ministerial meeting on U.S. soil. For five days, protests and the police response, including pepper spray and tear gas, dominated local news and brought downtown to a virtual standstill… The film will explore the "power of the individual" in the face of powerful governments and global corporations, Townsend told The Observer, a British newspaper. He said he was drawn to the WTO protest because it ‘considers a lot of issues that were diffused somewhat by 9/11,’" quoting the Seattle Times.

12. S.P.I.N.E.: THE SCIENTIFIC PANEL TO INVESTIGATE NINE-ELEVEN"
"Members of the Scientific Panel Investigating Nine-eleven come from a variety of professional backgrounds. Some investigate aspects of the 9/11 attacks, others search the web for useful information, and some write up new material. We have tried to maintain professional standards in both the analysis and presentation of the evidence we have assembled, as well as in the scenarios we have constructed. 'We have found solid scientific grounds on which to question the interpretation put upon the events of September 11, 2001 by the Office of the President of the United States of America and subsequently propagated by the major media of western nations. Our analysis of the detailed evidence implies a staged attack employing a variety of deceptive arrangements. Indeed, every element of the September 11 attacks, including cellphone calls from fast-moving aircraft, has an alternate means of creation. Panel members are scientists, engineers, and other professionals. All contribute through search and research," quoting the Physics911 site. [Ed. This writer commented last week about Sir Richard Branson donating $3 billion in profits to fight global warming saying that he should get engines on his Virgin aircraft that use no fossil fuels. “Australia's Virgin Blue [one of Branson’s airlines] has thrown its support behind Sir Richard Branson’s global call to reduce aircraft fuel emissions. The six-year-old airline, which already operates one of the world's most fuel efficient fleets, will target up to 5% further reduction of aircraft emissions per aircraft by 2008 and will commit to work proactively with energy providers to support the development and trialing of new green fuels. Chief Executive, Brett Godfrey, said ‘We wholeheartedly endorse Sir Richard's sustainable aviation vision,’” quoting this Virgin Blue press release.

Some of them even reuse their water. Home washes, on the other hand, usually drain directly to storm sewers that eventually empty into streams, lakes, rivers, or bays, affecting our fish friends and the health of the water,” quoting grist.org.

“An ancient slab of green stone inscribed with insects, ears of corn, fish, and other symbols is indecipherable so far, but one message is clear: It is the earliest known writing in the Western Hemisphere. The ancient Olmec civilization probably produced the faintly etched symbols around 900 B.C., or roughly three centuries before what previously had been proposed as the earliest examples of writing in the Americas. ‘We are dealing with the first, clear evidence of writing in the New World’" said Stephen Houston, a Brown University anthropologist. Houston and his U.S. and Mexican colleagues detail the tablet's discovery and analysis in a study appearing this week [Sept. 15] in the journal Science. The pattern of symbols covering the face of the rectangular block also represents a previously unknown ancient writing system,” quoting the AP.

After meeting with the mayor’s office to discuss a disarmament program, a group of women decided to deny their partners their conjugal rights and recorded a song for local radio to urge others to follow their example. ‘We met with the wives and girlfriends of gang members and they were worried some were not handing over their guns and that is where they came up with the idea of a vigil or a sex strike,’ mayor’s office representative Julio Cesar Gomez said. ‘The message they are giving them is disarm or if not then they will decide how, when, where and at what time,’ he told Reuters by telephone. Gomez said the city, in Colombia’s coffee-growing region, reported 480 killings last year,” quoting Reuters.
